I've got the docs for the Irish passport lined up, mostly need to get references and budget the cash for it. Current plan is to do so sometime in Feb/March but it depends on how much fucks I can give to getting references because those are a pain in the arse.
What refs do you need?

IIRC they just wanted a professional to sign off saying I was who I claimed to be. They didn't even have to be Irish

Applying for an Irish passport via a grandparent is a lot more hassle than through a parent because you have to first apply for citizenship via the foreign births register. If you apply through a parent they already consider you to be an Irish citizen so you just have to apply for the passport which is pretty straightforward.

Bloke who works with me did it, he had no idea that he could until I told him about you, the embassy were helpful, but he did have to do quite a bit of digging. It took him about 6 months in total. Mad thing is he’s a full on Brexit fan, so much so that he replaced his in-date U.K. passport with a blue/black one :D

Yeah the professionals.

I don't know any professionals and its not something I've done recently, plus Rona means its harder to get out and ask randos (and get the photos tbh).

Fucking professionals . I was lucky and had a mate who's a social worker. It's amazing who they'll consider a professional is these days

I've applied for a Maltese passport - it takes ages if you're not an oligarch - mostly so my daughter can then apply for citizenship - she may not want to take up the options it gives her, but she'll have them.

I’ll be applying for Swedish citizenship, followed by passport once I’m eligible in five months time. I doubt I’d be in such a hurry without Brexit, in fact I probably wouldn’t have done it at all.

The Irish are even more generous with their passports than I thought, looks like I should be able to get one if I can find enough of the documents - might see if I can get the name in Irish, it'll be like having a secret identity.

Yes I was going to do the same and then when I get my Kiwi Citizenship in a couple of years change my name by deedpoll and then have 3 passports in 3 different names.

A friend went over to Italy with his dad when his grandmother died to sort out her affairs. (She was Italian but spent much of her life in Scotland before moving back.) They found a load of different bank accounts in different names (not sure about passports) and I'm not quite sure if they ever worked out what the story was. (In latter years, she used to express her admiration for Mussolini so think my friend was a bit concerned about what they might find...)

I'm two generations off, my great-great-grandfather was Irish which makes me 1/16th Irish which is too long ago or I would. My daughter's fiance is 100% Irish and she has told us that when (Her mother was really pleased that she said when not if) they have children, they will be registered as Irish citizens. And since my daughter is thus 1/32nd Irish, it means her children will indeed be slightly more Irish (33/64th's) than English (31/64th's) or more accurately 31/64ths of the genetic potpourri that the Q's actually are.

I might be able to get an Italian passport (Italian grandmother) but would need to dig into the paperwork as it's a bit dependent on naturalisations/timings/sexist shit where Italian women used to be able to hold Italian citizenship but not pass it on (and whether I could get it via my GGF instead). To complicate things further, most/all? of the local records were destroyed during the war though believe you can potentially get them reconstructed (not sure how though).

My other grandmother was born in Ireland but when my Dad was looking into this a few years ago, he couldn't find stuff in the local church register so 🤷‍♀️. Might be easier to hang on for a Scottish one...

One of my Brazilian friends got Italian passport. Meant could stay in EU to work. Lot of Italians went to South America. Its pretty common for them to try to an EU passport through grandparents.

My other Brazilian friend is from the south of Brazil where the Germans went. She could not find exact birthplace of her grandmother in Europe and other evidence to show eligability.

How is that going? Can you be dual national in Spain?
Slowly, I'm starting specific lessons for my DELE at the start of the next term. Then onto the other exam I need. I've got 18 months before I've got my 10 years minimum residency.

I think, officially, you cannot have dual nationality. But...

I don't qualify but I probably would apply for an EU passport as my sister who is my only close relative now lives in Germany and it would make visits easier.

My missus is Irish but if I want one we'd have to live in Northern Ireland or Ireland for three years. Unlikely.

I don't think theres any point in me applying for one if I can't work, plus I don't know anyone in Ireland and most of my friends live in the UK.
