When Moderates Made Things Worse

The torture and slaughter of 10s of billions of sentient land animals (and maybe trillions of aquatic animals) every year, a global economy in which 62 people own as much wealth as over 3.5 billion poor people, and a development model that may well lead to the destruction of all life on earth are all the products of 'moderate policies'. The moderates are the biggest threat today. Scum like Isis will come and go, but the moderates, they're tougher to get rid of.
So spot on! Thankyou

Moderates will always accept things which are clearly unacceptable because they believe that to do otherwise would be unreasonable. They will remain neutral in conflicts between those with power and those without, thus effectively supporting the powerful. They believe you should never rock the boat even if the boat is headed over a waterfall. They can be bought even more cheaply than those who are overtly corrupt, and they can be bought en masse with concession and compromise and, when all else fails, fear.

Moderates are the human shield without which genuinely evil people would be a historical insignificance.

The continued Israeli occupation of Palestine is brought to you in association with a load of moderates who can only assume that the Palestinians must have done something to deserve it.

You have some representative bias present. Politics is usually a compromise. A balancing of factions. Therefore moderates are likely to be massively over represented in any glance through history.

And likewise you have a kind of odd, circular hindsight bias in blaming the rise of extremes on the preceeding moderates.

I'm not convinced. I would rather my children lived through an era of moderates than one of extremes. But then, as one of the lucky few percent to live in relative luxury, I'm biased towards the status quo.

Erm...not sure tbf. You've got a model here with 'moderates' and the 'genuinely evil'. Is there nobody else in the mix? Radicals? Revolutionaries? Soul singers? What are this lot up to while the evil are running amok? And you seem to assume that the genuinely evil will inevitably achieve power/notoriety/ their evil ends. Fair play...the moderates aren't stopping them but what about the rest?

Indeed. The problems are caused by extremists. Moderates may not have resisted but they've hardly made things worse.

Are we including people with no real interest in politics under 'moderates' here? Gardeners for example who just wish in general terms that people would get along with each other? Factory workers who believe in a fair day's work for a fair day's pay but don't trust politicians? Single mothers with low incomes who haven't got time to do anything else than care for their children?

Eh? Eh?

Yes the world is rubbish and it's leaders are rubbish. Moderate or extreme, they are rubbish. Just that the extremes *tend* to cause more violence as they are defined as extreme because of the violence.

Womens' Institutes - that's the sort of people I'd call moderates. But you lot? Oh no. Now 101 years of making jam for people and suddenly you're telling them they're responsible for the Iraq war? :getagrip:
