US election 2020 thread

It'll be like all the other millionMaga things, a resounding disappointment for all involved apart from the ones making money from it. Some people seem to be expecting a lot from the patriots on 6th jan though, what are they supposed to do bring enough food and underpants to camp out in the middle of washington until the election is overturned?

What are the temperatures like in DC at the moment? I wouldn't fancy a tent in current UK temp and i bet it's colder there.

Currently a balmy 6°C (realfeel 2°) so if it stays like that, there'll be a few of the twats camped out. Hope there's a massive fucking blizzard in minus degrees on the day.

We're getting a blizzard at the moment. Forecast of 6 to 10 inches of snow (we have about 6 now). Usually, the east coast is about two or three days behind us so its possible.

Usual twitter copy fail.

Pinched from the rather excellent Parlertakes twitter account. I agree with them.

"I highly discourage people from going to http://wildprotest.com and signing up to attend on 1/6 with fake names, emails, and phone numbers. Please don’t do this."

Done. Mar-a-lago's Zip code is 33480, btw, and the phone number is (561) 832 2600

Just in case you need a phone number and a zip code...

I think we need to test their resolve on this one.

Gohmert and the electors filed suit against Pence on Monday in an attempt to argue that the vice president has sole authority to determine which presidential electors Congress will count when it certifies the results of the election. The far-fetched suit essentially asks the court to grant Pence the authority on Jan. 6 to overrule the results in swing states such as Arizona and have Congress count only pro-Trump electors instead of the ones President-elect Joe Biden won.

In new court filings made public Tuesday, the plaintiffs disclosed that they had reached out to Pence before filing their suit in an attempt to join forces but that their talks did not reach any kind of agreement.

“In the teleconference, Plaintiffs' counsel made a meaningful attempt to resolve the underlying legal issues by agreement, including advising the Vice President's counsel that Plaintiffs intended to seek immediate injunctive relief in the event the parties did not agree,” lawyers for Gohmert and the electors said in the filing. “Those discussions were not successful in reaching an agreement and this lawsuit was filed.”

Is there a demand for electoral system reform in the US? The method is incredibly complicated considering you're just voting to fill one role?

Is it sacrosanct on the grounds that the founding fathers set it up?

I think you need large majorities to force through that sort of constitutional change - way bigger than either party could conceivably get currently. And the chances of anyone coming up with something mutually agreeable are not great to say the least.

Neither party has an interest in electoral reform because the current system is the one that they derive their power from. Same reason you won't get Tories or Labour pushing for electoral reform in the UK.

The Democrats would have an interest in tweaking it as they keep losing with a majority of the vote. I'm sure they'd be happy to look at adjusting it if they thought they could get it through. It would still maintain the two party system I'm sure.

Changes to the constitution need the approval of 38 out of 50 states - since the Republicans have only won the popular vote in one out of the last eight elections but have won the presidency in three of them, I don't think many red states will be up for changing the current system.

If they made voter suppression a criminal Federal offense and carried through with it they might get a somewhat fairer system. Well fairer to the Democrats anyway.

Pence is a cunt but he still isn't as bad as his boss. If he agrees to do this then assuming he gets away with it (he won't) then no matter what happens in the short term then he will go down in history as the man who singlehandedly turned the US from an democracy to an outright dictatorship.
If he trying and fails he will still be remembered in the same way as Benedict Arnold.

There is, but it ain't going nowhere. The only people who benefit from the system as is are the same people in charge of changing it.

apparently he's already said he won't, that is, his lawyers have refused to co-operate with Gohmert's Assholes (which i think was a t.v. show in the 60s).

A Republican senator says he's going to challenge state results when Congress meets to certify them on Jan. 6 - it isn't going to change anything unless a majority of the House and Senate vote to reject the challenged result, which isn't going to happen, but since an objection triggers 2 hours of debate and a vote, it could end up being a long day.

this guy is tbe son of john sununu, the hardest bushite of them all and an all-around scumbag. that this family is now being threatened by other rightwingers ...

And of all the shit around at the moment, having to wear a mask is the thing these protestors take up arms about

McConnell Blocks $2,000 Stimulus Check Vote (msn.com)

Just how badly do the Repblicans not want control of the Senate?

They may not want control. Its likely that things will really go tits up in the next year or two as Covid and Trump's policies wear on the economy. They'll be in position to blame to Democrats if the Presidency, the House, and the Senate are all in the hands of the Democrats. Even if they lose control, they have enough seats that they can block a lot of things the Democrats might want to do and you can bet they will obstruct, obstruct, obstruct.
