US election 2020 thread

Doing some random reading about our lass Sydney, and I came across this tidbit.

If you read the article, she made her name by defending Flynn. She is trying to overturn the guilty plea Flynn entered.

At a hearing on the matter in September, Powell revealed that she had held a meeting with Trump in the previous weeks at which she urged him not to pardon Flynn so they could continue fighting out his case.

from -> Trump campaign cuts Sidney Powell from president’s legal team

smug face re sidney, that was quick.
Maybe she's been dropped so that when she gets sued by the thousands of people she's accused of taking bribes from Hugo Chavez its just her thats liable? Or did the president have a moment of sanity and realise she was not actually useful anymore, too batshit even for him.

Powell's speech was awesome, It's a massive co-ordinated plot involving Big Tech, the Fake Media, the Democrats and a dead South American dictator, if she'd mentioned the lizard people or Illuminati, someone in the crowd would have shouted "Bingo"
There is a crazy element that some of the Trump base will just lap this up but if she goes in front of a judge and talks like this, they'll have her carted off to the cells.

This seems to be the tipping point for lots of Trumpers. On the right wing site I'm browsing, the general view is wtf. They have realised they need to stop believing every conspiracy theory put forward by their side.
I think i'm seeing the same thing. That statement distancing trump from his staunchest warrior Sidney, with no explanation, has shocked a lot of people. There will emerge a consensus view on how this too is all part of the plan but I think they'll lose quite a few at this juncture, the ones for whom the effort required to continue to Believe is harder than facing up to the idea that maybe they've been misled.

I'm not an expert on US libel law, but if she was tweeting that stuff on behalf of Trump, while employed by his campaign etc, there's the possibility of a case against him for what she's said.

It's at least as legitimate as most of the dubious legal cases Trump himself has threatened to take, and if it gets rejected by the lower courts, we can always win in the Supreme Court

That seems likely, though I presume Giuliani and the rest knew what she was going to come out with at the press conference. In fact you almost wonder how they split the topics up beforehand: 'okay, I'll take the observers being more than 6 feet away. What are you doing? Bribes and boxes of votes, right. Sidney, you're all over the Matrix and dead communists? Check. Right, who's taking the giant space rabbits and hair dye?'

((((satire))))) How can it possibly compete? :(

At some point there's going to be insider account of the trump team's decision making in the post election period. I'd love to hear the exact steps taken that lead to them doing a press conference in a garden centre. And then the latest one. Apart from shovelling layer upon layer of mad shit, it wasn't even a good set of conspiracy theories. How the fuck did they end up dancing to the tune of the wildest crazy qanon person in the room? It's not so much the last days of Rome as the last days of Alan Partridge.

a-HA!
voter fraud found.

The attorney leading President Donald Trump’s recount effort in Wisconsin voted illegally according to his own legal argument that in-person absentee ballots should be thrown out. So did his wife.

Jim Troupis, a former Dane County judge and Cross Plains attorney who is representing the Trump campaign, would not answer questions about why he and his wife voted that way.

I can't wait to see what effect all this is going to have on the runoff - this is so far beyond inspiring the base to vote isn't it? WTF is it going to do? How is it going to be possible to conduct an election use voting machines which one team allege are fixed, or have the election overseen by officials they claim are corrupt, even though they're on the same side? It's mind-boggling.

It’s going brilliantly for the GOP, the whole trump legal team doing them proud. :D

He didn't actually quite say that though. He said that Trump's followers should threaten to withhold votes and money unless they 'get out of their basements to demand that action must be taken to fix steal of the 11/3 GA election'. It's a bit different from saying they shouldn't vote for them. He's saying that they should make demands of their senators which (disregarding the actual nature of the demand) is pretty reasonable.

More Trump legal team fail:

The Supreme Court of the United States on Monday took no action to overturn a lower court decision that allowed the counting of late-arriving mail-in ballots in Pennsylvania.

President Donald Trump’s campaign had sought to exclude mail-in ballots that arrived after election day.

In 4-4 decision in October, the high court upheld the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s ruling that said ballots postmarked by election day can arrive up to three days after the election.

The court later handed the Trump campaign a victory with an order saying that late-arriving ballots must be segregated before being counted.

Why are they even doing this, when segregated votes don't change the outcome?

To undermine the election result and create a narrative of a stolen election and a legal system that favours the democrats. Liberals who think this is about Trump believing the SC will overturn the result are as stupid as republicans who think the SC might do just that.

Cos it's the best they can do.

Ian Kershaw's phrase for the workings of the Nazi regime comes to mind here. Working towards the Fuhrer. The leader lets his broad objectives be known - discrediting the election so that he wins, as communicated in CAPS via twitter - and then goes off to play golf. Those seeking to please him compete with one another to produce results. Some of this stuff may well have been floated before the election, so they're just following through on that and seeking to maintain the favour they gained by suggesting it in the first place.

Of course, in this case, the leader's objective is entirely impossible, but that was equally true in the final days of the Nazis. They are all living in various levels of denial and delusion. And people in heightened states of denial or delusion (Powell) rise to the top because they are saying and doing what is necessary to get the leader's attention where all rational hope is gone.

There is no master plan. There is no long-term strategic objective. Various Trump supporters are either going along with him or staying quiet hoping that the situation will go away. Others, like Christie, are starting to break ranks - Trump has no leverage over anyone now. Objectively, his favour is worthless.

And the leaders of the GOP appear to be paralysed, which is all good. Anyone who thinks this is positive news for the GOP in the longer term is deluded. They're doing their very best to lose the Senate on top of everything else, to turn a minor setback into a major crisis.
