US election 2020 thread

OK, but you seemed previously to be saying it would be the courts.
Trump is trying to get the result changed through the courts. That is what he is doing. And the system allows him to do it. Once that fails, and it will, he is plumb out of options.

That said, it is a mistake to think of Supreme Courts as politically neutral bodies. They're not. They will rule in a way that preserves the system.

Trump has just terminated the Secretary of State for Defence for not putting troops on the street during the BLM protests. He has now installed a yes man. It’s not a great leap to see how dangerous this could quickly become. Is the military aligned with the president, the constitution or God?
The US military will not get involved. At all.

You do not get a coup, certainly in somewhere as big as the USA, without the most extraordinary amount of violence. This is not and will not be a coup. This is a sad old man using political donations to fight a losing court battle.

Interestingly, America has only ever suffered one coup. And that was done in 1898 by the party of white segregationists, the Democrats.

“This is a white man’s country, and white men must control and govern it.” - from their handbook of the time.

America’s Only Successful Coup d’Etat Overthrew a Biracial Government in 1898 - America's forgotten coup.

I think some of you are getting overexcited

I know its a common tactic of the Trump administration, but they're certainly ramping up the "we're staying" rhetoric today:

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo refused to acknowledge Joe Biden's victory as President-elect, saying at the State Department Tuesday that "there will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration."

Maybe. I’m not ashamed to say I’m properly scared now. It’s not that I think they’ll succeed but just assuming it’s all going to be fine by automatic operation of ‘the law’ or ‘politics’ seems really daft.
It's not so much that it is automatic as that trump has no support for an actual coup. That's essentially what I meant by 'politics': the aggregate of self interest among those with the power to do such a thing.

I am only concerned that there will be more lives needlessly lost.
Though my pragmatic Mrs says it’s America, hundreds of lives are lost annually, she accepts it as business as usual.
