US election 2020 thread

You do realise that I am not the President of the United States right? I'm some random nobody on the internet swapping my insigificant opinions with other random nobodies and that nothing you or I think matters in the slightest.
And you realise this is a forum for political debating where we express opinions and then try to support them with reason and evidence right?

Much to be said for that point of view but it hits the problem that the US isn't the only nation meddling in the affairs of others and would require everyone else to do the same, what use was the UN when Russia invaded Ukraine? What use would it be if China decided to take back Taiwan by force? The conflict brewing between Egypt and Ethiopia over the Nile dam? The US is the worlds premier superpower, It has a huge military, economic and technological lead over the rest of the world.
Even if it wanted (which it clearly dosn't) to not meddle in the affairs of other nations it would get dragged in.
As for the Americans realising they themselves are being screwed well given 70 million of them voted for Trump, not any time soon is the answer to that.
The US and others could follow the example of Uruguay.

Uruguay has a small military. It only commits troops to take part in anything other than the direct defence of its own borders as part of UN peacekeeping forces. Imagine if the US and every other big military power were to do what Uruguay has done - trim down their military and only allow it to be used abroad as part of the UN. What do you think the UN could achieve?

Quite a lot I would imagine and such a world would be a much better place than the current one.

Or if they had any interest in conflict resolution at all maybe the biggest military power could contribute more than the insignificant fraction of its forces to UN peacekeeping forces that it currently does.

Nothing without an improved decision-making mechanism

Going to be interesting to see if he actually does get the Nobel prize next year, cos (touch wood) he did a full term without starting anything (a rarity for a US President...whilst they gave one to Obama for basically not being GWB. That said I personally feel we are closer to WW3 than we were 4 years ago, which is in part down to Trump though Iraq casts a long shadow

The UN is a joke, isn't there a long list of massacres they've stood by and enabled?

As pointed out, though, he didn't really need to start anything new as there was plenty already there to keep him going, and indeed escalate. Bombing Afghanistan, for instance - in 2019, Trump managed nearly twice as many bombs as Obama in his peak year. There are 250,000 US troops serving abroad right now (vanishingly few of them working with the UN). It's become so normalised that it is barely remarked upon. Permanent war.

Why is the UN a joke, though? Whose fault is that? Could it be the fault of the countries that bypass the UN to start wars independently, countries that band together and pretend these new wars are to protect themselves, such as the countries of NATO?

Didn't Maggies government stick two fingers up to the UN during the Falklands conflict.

Well thank good the Americans were there to stop all those massacres.
They weren't whose claiming they are? the purposes of the US, the Russian, the Chinese and most other countries is to serve that nation's interests The US is the biggest and most powerful so it rightly gets the most stick but its no different than any other when it comes to it.

Because the UN isn't capable of acting meaningfully on security matters without Russia and China's say-so, which they only ever withhold solely for humanitarian purposes of course.

'Acting meaningfully'

Interesting choice of words. The world would be a far better place if countries like the US or the UK or France, or the NATO collective, stopped 'acting meaningfully '.

the us of a is the one superpower left. neither china nor russia can compete. the un or eu ain't even close.
the us military protects american interests worldwide, mostly without actually fighting.
the american people might be divided, the american elite is not, and it will be business as usual no matter who sits in the oval office.

Whether it's sports-entertainment, religion-entertainment or politics-entertainment
it's bread and circuses for the masses.
the election was a beautiful spectacle, trump is a born entertainer, a gift that keeps on giving and a proof that even a clown can rise to the highest power - at least a clown born with a silver spoon up every orfice. probably he even restored some americans faith in the election process while he was at it.

It's considerably worse than any of the others. Post WW2 America is a society based on mass murder.
