US election 2020 thread

It was absolutely fine to celebrate Trump being humiliated. I raised a glass myself.

I was completely aware of the But, though. And I do think it’s reasonable to voice the But, especially when folks are swapping memes and gifs painting leading Dems as superhero liberators on this very thread.
Indeed if the sort of stuff below does not make you want to vomit then somethings wrong.
But wider than that it's been less then 24 hours since the declaration and already liberals are already taking this as the triumph of their politics (despite still insisting that it was the action of the left that have cost them seats)
There’s no demagogue quite like a sad, defeated demagogue. There’s no strongman quite like a weakman. And there’s no populism without popular appeal.
And there are people if not celebrating Biden at least making the same kind of statements that were made after Blair, after Clegg, after Obama, even after Starmer. This time it will be different!

I credit you with better comprehension skills than that. But if you insist to know my mind and my writing better than me then, as you say, I'll lower my expectations too. Which is a shame.
What really disappointed me tbh was your taking the comparison with JM as a direct one. But hey ho, onwards and hopefully upwards

The second is that the Democratic Party has a coalition to satisfy, from Bernie, AOC outwards that must offer some resistance to hawkish foreign policy and must demand some gains in universal healthcare, police reform etc. I hope they achieve some.
Like how Starmer was definitely going to have to accommodate the left in the LP. How's that working out?

Ignore the title.

This is Bidens article in Foreign Affairs in which he lays out his 'manifesto'. Some of it is a bit more left wing than I expected, like the parts about ending the 'forever wars' and the egregious Trump policies on family separation at the border etc.

However much of it seems to be about restoring Americas 'global leadership' by which he means pressuring countries to do stuff through economic means I guess rather than starting wars all over the place. In particular he talks about the importance of democracy and guiding more countries in Latin America towards 'the network of democracies' he's not 100% clear on how he's going to do that. :hmm:

It's worth reading the whole thing in full whether you love or loathe him.

Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth. And we're still dealing with the aftermath of America getting punched in the mouth 19 years ago. Biden doesn't have the time to set out his stall because the world won't wait for him.

Yeah there's no mention of COVID-19 in that article (unless I missed it) and not much talk about health which I find quite weird. Quite a big thing to leave out.

The bickering is getting a bit wearing now.

I’m listening to Göran Söllscher Bach Works for Lute. It’s great. My partner is listening to Off the Menu podcast on the big stereo, and there’s only so much sarcastic chatter about food I can take on a Sunday morning.

I might have to invest in better speakers for this room, though. I’ve just got a cheap JVC mini hi fi here, but I think better speakers might be all I need. Any recs? I’ve not got room for big floor standers.

Noise cancelling headphones, or you'll just get into sound wars.
