US election 2020 thread

So I have questions about the process of "calling" a State ... in every State that matters, there appears to be enough votes still uncounted to flip them all for Trump (i.e. NV, AZ, GA and PA) based on the % of expected as displayed on all the maps ... so when a State is called, do they have access to better info about how many votes are actually left to count? If so, wish they'd display it on the maps! Cos as it stands now, it really all still looks premature to be saying Biden won.

One for petee or JTG perhaps

They're basically doing what JTG was doing (number of votes remaining to be declared, trend and demographic analysis of where they're coming from), with a few subtle differences.

There's whole teams doing it, no 5-9 hour time difference, they're paid for it, and they probably drink less wine.

It's who he replaces them with that's more worrying. There has been speculation that he plans to fil, the civil service with minions who cannot be easily dismissed by an iciming president,
Surely if he can fire the current holders so casually then Biden can do the same for their replacements? I think this is just 'getting even' with people that he doesn't like or he thinks aren't sufficiently loyal. Perhaps they dared to bring up the subject of handing over to Bidens team.
Petty and vindictive is far more Trumpish than scheming and forward thinking.

No. Pence would have to be approved and sworn in as President.
yep, looks like it'd have to be the old 25th amendment, say he's unable to discharge his duties because he's out of his tiny mind and then two-thirds of both houses of Congress would have to agree, unlikely but i don't think totally impossible at this point.

Yeah, not impossible. But it wouldn't be quick and easy, like if he resigned, Pence would automatically take over straight away. You'd think it should be as simple as that, really, since Pence was elected too.

The reason I keep see this coming up is from people who assume Trump will be tried for various crimes and will need to be pardoned. I'm having to sit on my hands the way some people on here probably do when I don't understand more esoteric political machinations. (Well, I assume some do; this is urban, so most don't).

One of my relatives is a very senior exec in the Four Seasons Hotel group. He says that the Repugs had booked the PA Four Seasons but then cancelled and went with the landscaping industrial estate Four Seasons instead. Its utterly bizarre.
Will this person ever speak to the press? I really hope we find out the full story behind this, it's one of the great episodes of our age.

No doubt but I doubt Trump will be doing much work for the next few months, and it's then a question of what the republicans can get away with in that time. Mitt Romney seems to have got himself appointed head of something or other...

E2a: can't find a source for the Romney thing. As you were.

This is not in doubt, But. Priorities. We can talk about this any day from tomorrow onwards. To not celebrate today is to kick people in the face who you and me want onside. Learn how to communicate or forever stay in darkness. It's a lesson the left and anarchism in this country have never learned.
I don't know how much there is to celebrate in today's news beyond the toppling of trump. Any hopes that the presidential result could lead to the last four years being put behind us and the us could start to move on in a good direction seem unlikely to be realised while the senate can frustrate him on partisan grounds. So we seem to have at least two years of drift ahead of us. And that's before looking at the great challenges facing biden, from repairing the most egregious acts of trump at home to facing a confident and aggressive china to bringing the us to face up to climate change.

So to celebrate today is to celebrate a great illusion, to laud a victory that contains seeds of defeat. This will be the most miserable of presidencies which won't satisfy democrats and will lead to more anger among republicans. On their own terms the democrats have got someone whose instincts are compromise when they need someone with a bold vision and the vigour to carry it out.

So I don't think today's a day for celebration, also because celebrating this is also a kick in the teeth for people democrats want on side, namely the many millions of working class Americans who voted republican. The millions of people so fearful of the future they trusted trump. Without their concerns being addressed (tho not kow-towed to) the next four years will be an utter waste.

this would all tax a more capable person than Biden. So if I see little cause to celebrate when looking at this from the pov of a democrat how much less from the point of view of an anarchist or socialist. The change desired is not in the gift of Biden or Harris or the senate or house of reps. The cops will still kill people with impunity. Drones will still be used to assassinate people across the world. The interests of corporations will still trump those of working class communities. It's like celebrating the fall of major and the tories in 1997 without recognising the authoritarianism inherent in new labour. There is nothing to celebrate here as trumpism hasn't been vanquished and may yet vanquish biden

Yeah, balance of probability, size of gap etc etc. States can release data on what votes are left and where (depends on the states and even the counties as to how solid this data is) and then the data people can project based on trends.
It's been really hard this year with the states that count their mail votes after the election day vote, they've had to wait n see, wait n see...
AZ still looks like a premature call to me. Now ploughing through provisional ballots and others and the gap steadily narrowing.

Oh, I don’t think that there’ll be any pardons going on, just maybe possibly the Republican Party deciding to put trump in a padded cell out of sight until January to cut their losses.

Ah, there's Thanksgiving and Christmas, and the rest of the time he'll just rant on Twitter. Well, hopefully - apart from the ranting that's the way it usually goes.

Being a lame duck couldn't be more appropriate for someone named Donald. :D It's going to be glorious knowing that people will be calling him that and there's nothing he can do about it.
