Try as they might, they NEVER "could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously" as the Russians are currently doing.

John Sweeney was being interviewed live from Ukraine on RTE show Morning Ireland.
He had to stop the interview when a soldier shouted at him and pointed a gun at him.

He got arrested a few days back, suspected of being a Russian spy, until they checked him out & let him go.

I did think the reporters on the ground are bloody brave.

The mayor of the south-eastern city of Mariupol says that scores of civilians have been killed over the past 14 hours in relentless shelling of residential areas by Russian forces.
Vadym Boychenko told Ukraine's 1+1 TV Channel that Moscow's troops have also stopped civilian evacuations from the port city, preventing thousands from fleeing the battle.

"There’s been colossal destruction of residential infrastructure, there are many wounded and unfortunately many civilian dead, women, children, old people," Boychenko said. "A full-scale genocide of the Ukrainian people is under way."
Quote Message: You have to understand that the occupation forces of the Russian Federation have done everything to stop the exit of civilians from our city of half a million people.

Quote Message: Our railway link has been cut – they even went to the railway station and fired on our diesel locomotives so that people can’t be evacuated. So their mission is to destroy us, they have no intention of helping civilians. from Vadym Boychenko

feel somewhat less despairing then a few days ago - it seems that the Russians are reluctant to let loose the full force of their artillery and air force on Ukrainian cities (yet), they made decide they have no choice but time is not on their side - its on the side of the Ukrainians. Poor morale, supply problems - (keeping a huge army in the field for that amount of time), domestic unrest and economic hit are only to get worse - meanwhile the Ukrainians will be getting more and more weapons from the west and more time to build defences and train their militias.
It may be that Russia cant achieve a military victory now - (long term the war was unwinnable anyway) - Ukraine is huge and they would have to grind out battles to take Kiev and the further they push the Ukrainians back the longer and more vulnerable their supply lines get - whilst having to occupy potentially very hostile territory.
Its all a question of how far vlad will go or, more importantly, how far he is allowed to go. Im guessing many people in the kremlin are putting their minds to how to get out of this disaster - (and maybe practising how to throw a knife or razor rimmed bowler hat the length of one of Vlads tables).

A Greek convoy left Mariupol this morning - Mariupol and surrounding villages are where most of Ukraine's Greek minority live.

The leader of main opposition party, SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, Alexis Tsipras held a teleconference with members of the Greek community in Ukraine on Wednesday according to a party announcement.

During their conversation, the president and vice-president of the Greek community of Odessa outlined their struggle for survival and the fight against time facing the members of the Greek diaspora in the area in their efforts to flee the war zones in Ukraine.

“It is our obligation to make every effort to end the Russian invasion and for peace, as well as every effort to help the [Greeks] of Ukraine, to save lives and minimize losses,” said Tsipras. He signaled his intent to help and support the Greeks of Ukraine in any way he could. He also stated that he would contact the Foreign Ministry and consular authorities in Mariupol and Odessa on this issue.

Tsipras also expressed his support for the efforts of the Greek consular authorities to assist the evacuation of Greeks from the area, and highlighted the importance of maintaining an escape corridor to neighboring countries, with Greece as the final destination.

Following from my previous less-pessimistic post - we are in a scenario where someone who is doing a very good impersonation of being a deluded megalomaniac has the worlds largest nuclear arsenal at his disposal and says shit like "there could be no world without russia in it" to help us sleep at night . Discussed in this article.

As Russia struggles in Ukraine, will Putin break the nuclear taboo? | Kristin Ven Bruusgaard

I imagine getting vlad away from the nuclear button is number one priority for every other nation's foreign policy right now.

Everyone I’ve read seems agreed that the war is ultimately (long term) unwinnable for Russia, that there are simply no good outcomes from this point onwards for Putin from this adventure.

Which just doesn’t leave much room for the whole he’s perfectly rational he’s playing 4D chess argument does it.
And saying that speculation about his state of mind is irrelevant also doesn’t make sense cos anticipating your adversaries reactions and assuming things about what they are thinking is kind of important if you’re deciding on yr next move in a fight.

Has anyone said such speculation is irrelevant?

Seems they signed a defence agreement a couple of years ago*... and there's the ongoing Tigray war in Ethiopia. Don't know much about the situation there though.

*fuck, 2018 is 4 years ago now.
Covid rules. Everything is two years longer ago than you first think.

Eritrea is still utterly fucked up. It still enforces indefinite conscription. One of the most fucked-up places on the planet. Doesn't surprise me to see them standing by Putin.

At first glance, that appears to be the BBC reporting a racist comment from the Ukranian Deputy Chief Prosecutor, rather than actual racism from the media itself.

I'm not denying that examples of such racism may exist, but that doesn't appear to be one.
it was more the thread i was referring to. there are many more examples on it.
