Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

Amazing, that the swiss are really not "remaining neutral" any more, it was fine to take all the nazi money they could get but now they're feeling queasy. Really surprised by it. Switzerland backs full EU sanctions against Russia
Very closely aligned with the EU nowadays. Would have been awkward to say the least to have been coining it in at the expense of their EU neighbours.

That, and Ukraine being considered for fast-track EU membership, and it's being reported the EU will provide satellite imagery to Ukraine, and Finland now majority in favour of joining NATO are not going to sit well with Putin etc at all...

Spymaster - this is the kind of thing im talking about when we were discussing whether the Tories were talking up war

Yes but this is Russian bollocks though, said when they were already nuts deep in the invasion. What Truss said was that Putin posed a larger threat than to just Ukraine, and she was absolutely right. For anyone to say that comment ramped-up tensions whilst Russia were in the middle of a full blown assault is laughable, as is the suggestion that it caused Putin to raise his alert status. The whole world is probably on as high alert as it's possible to be, and has been since this started. It's rhetoric from Russia.

justification initally given for nuclear stance was sanctions.

Her unqualified remark about some sort of International Brigade were unhelpful though, if you don't know what doing turning up in Kiev could endanger other peoples lives as well as your own

i cant argue with the gist of that...i still think there is room for my point which is that there is a way of dealing with things that makes things worse or better.
at some point, hopefully soon, there will be negotiation and meaningful de-escalation talks and I think it is best people like Liz Truss are kept far away from them

The defence secretaries comments today were a reasonable description of what that rhetoric was all about, making sure to include the idea that the UK does not want to enable miscalculations that could upset the MAD balancing act.

The defence secretary sought to reassure the public over Mr Putin's order, saying: "We don't see or recognise in the sort of phrase or the status he described as anything that is a change to what they have currently as their nuclear posture.

"This is predominantly about Putin putting it on the table just to remind people, remind the world, that he has a deterrent.

"We will not do anything to escalate in that area, we will not do anything to feed any miscalculation, we take it very, very seriously."

Quote is from Ukraine conflict: Russia blames Liz Truss and others for nuclear alert

That's obviously bollocks but why the fuck does Truss make the statements she does aside from wanting to puff herself up and look tough? As if Putin or anyone else is going to go 'oooooo I'd better stop this it's The Truss and she's getting angry'.
Do we know what it is she said which has apparently led to the Russian response ?

Edit: it’s in the BBC article I see:

Speaking to Sky News's Trevor Phillips on Sunday, Ms Truss warned that if the Russian president was not stopped in Ukraine, there could be "conflict" between Russia and Nato.
"This long-running conflict is about freedom and democracy in Europe," she said.
"If we don't stop Putin in Ukraine, we are going to see others under threat: the Baltics, Poland, Moldova, and it could end up in a conflict with Nato. We do not want to go there."
Pretty clumsy from Truss, but what do we expect? She’s probably delighted the world has noticed her.

Because she's campaigning for leadership.

The entire conservative party is constantly in election mode. Every announcement by its cabinet is to glorify themselves or to remind people "guess who did this, the Conservatives did it, vote for us." Our isn't Britain great posters or here's what the government did is now draped in the conservative logo along with the British flag.

There's basically been nothing else on the news for five days. I wonder what they'll push through in this time.
