UK gov to ban porn sites that don't verify users' age

That article asks will it work?

No.

Children will use foreign proxy servers to browse porn instead.

I expect a new market of "get around the UK block" software to appear.

Porn will find a way.

All you need is a vpn, plenty of free ones out there

Realistically, it's not currently possible to completely block access on the internet to anything there's a demand for (at least, without getting ridiculously draconian).
That's what worries me about this as well as all the other unrealistic promises made by politicians - brexit of course being the other big one at the moment. They put forward a simple premise and get votes based on it being seemingly simple and then when it isn't so simple in practice rather then admit that or back down they ramp up the plan - going more draconian.

Do they classify any site carrying a pornographic image such as well Urban75?

What about site carrying 3rd party advertising?
Those ad providers could one day send porn ads to your site? Does that mean you now require age verification?

Ah. So the ISPs are tied into this. We've been here before, haven't we? And I don't remember that working very well, either...
It's just turns into a case of chase the domain changes when it comes to movies streaming sites.

123 movies has lots of domains. It's current UK unblocked one is russian. When that gets a UK block their Twitter feed tells you within days of their new domain.

How many movie streaming sites are there compared to porn sites?
Less than a 5th of the number?
Less than 1%?

The resources really will be inadequate thinking about it.

Well, the April 2018 deadline is almost here, interesting article on the Wired site:

Well they missed that deadline, now they are saying it's coming in this April, 2019.

Masturbation is about to get a lot more fiddly from April this year – with all porn sites requiring credit card details or government-issued ID.
Plan to require ID for all online porn from April ‘to go ahead’ | Metro News

Users will need to provide ID, either in the form of credit cards, driver’s licences, or special cards purchased from shops.

There’s likely to be several companies offering age verification systems, with 60,000 shops in Britain will offer Age Verification cards (based on shopkeeper’s assessment), which should be on offer before April.

"Masturbation is about to get a lot more fiddly from April this year"

:D

That did make me smile, as does this article:

Porn age verification law is coming in April to choke grot site easy access | TheINQUIRER

Online filth flicks fans will just have to swallow the verification process - porn fans will soon have to prove they're old enough to bash one out to online grot flicks and pics - porn sites will have to swallow the need to impose proper age checks for people looking to pleasure themselves

That'll be an unwelcome pain in the backside for porn sites, but it could also give some porn fans blue balls (so to speak) as they grapple to verify their age.

:D

Are the verification cards solely for porn sites? That would make asking for one in a shop slightly awkward. :hmm:

It could also lead to them losing a chunk of their target advertising audience for campaign videos.
