Tottenham Hotspur 2020-21

It's not just that we're losing, or unwatchable, it's that there doesn't seem to be a plan.

When we beat Arsenal and City, we ceded possession and sat deep - hardly free flowing football, but we had a plan. Wait, wait, wait, pick the right moment to press in numbers, force a mistake, win the ball, break at speed and pick them off.

Now I don't know what they're supposed to be doing, just sit back and wait to concede.

The strength of our squad are Son and Kane, two of the best forwards in the world. Bale in the mix would be amazing lightning attacking football.
This sitting back shit is just torturous, and if we're not careful the players will want out too - its no fun for them

I think the balance of the team is wrong, and it's frustrating.

Obviously agree that Kane and Son are the two most important players, but I'd add Ndombele in there too. Problem is I think he's in the wrong position.

Similar to Dembele in my opinion, he is an attacking player but his strength is in receiving the ball under pressure, resisting the tackle and turning away, covering ground and starting that counter attack. He's not the player to get the assist, but to play the pass before that. If he's too far forward there's less pitch to move into, and too much creative burden on the forwards. For me we should be playing Hjobjerg as a single holding midfielder, with Ndombele in that transitional role on one side and another creative/attacking player on the other - Lo Celso when fit, or the forgotten man Dele Alli. A bit like the pair of 8/10 hybrids played when David Silva was in his pomp alongside De Bruyne.

I can only assume it was supposed to be the containment & counter, but with very little countering and no containment.
I watched Vinicius quite a lot at Benfica and he's not up for that sort of role up front. I think you are right about what Deli Ali and or Lo Celso could have brought though.

Well this is a bit more like it. The front 3 we were all hoping for fit and firing at the same time. Not to say "I told you so" to Mourinho, but the team looks much better balanced with Ndombele in a more traditional midfield role too.

Welcome back Gareth Bale

Why were they not playing Bale? I really hope he gets a good long spell.

Not been particularly fit or sharp, plus there's the Mourinho school of thought that says one of the front 3 should be prepared to track back - remember when he had Martial playing almost as an extra left back for Man Utd?

Bale has looked so much better last few appearances, today he was brilliant.

You can tell Bale's had a few years in Spain. He's wearing gloves.

Reminds me of the Barcelona section of my family. Won't take their coats off in August here unless it's above 20 degrees.

Idle musings on a good performance...

Front 4 were excellent, although remain unconvinced on playing a forward (Lucas today, previously Lamela) in the 10 role. The midfield 2 were up against another 2, against most teams it will be 3. Fulham on Thursday will almost certainly play an extra man - often as not they're a 3-4-2-1 with the 2 both tasked with assisting in midfield, so it should be a game for Dele Alli. Or more realistically, Moussa Sissoko. Either way the front 3 needs to be Son-Kane-Bale, just a shame it's taken 25 league games to get to the point where that's as good on the pitch as it is on paper.

Sanchez had a really good game, but I'm still not totally convinced. I'd like Rodon and Tanganga (each alongside either Alderweireld or Dier for experience) to be getting more playing time at CB, we can only tell if we have one or both of a long term CB pairing if they play.

Reguilon makes a big difference at LB - Davies has excellent positional sense but Reguilon's recovery speed makes him a defensive equal, and going forwards the difference is night and day.

Nick Pope had yet another good game despite being beaten 4 times. Interesting to hear rumours around both him and Dean Henderson, with Lloris linked with a move to PSG to reunite with Pochettino. Personally, despite my undying love for Hugo, I think the time is right for that to happen.

Interesting musings Zapp.

I thought Davinson had a good game too - albeit against Burnley’s second choice striker pairing! The team needed a clean sheet and Sanchez needed it on a personally level I feel. I’ve been fairly critical of him and Dier of late. Like you I can’t see why Rodon and/or Tanganga haven’t been given more opportunities as it’s clear Sanchez/Dier doesn’t work. Equally perplexed when I’ve seen Toby on the bench. I realise his legs have gone or are going (why did we give him a bumper 3 year contract last summer?) but his positional nous and intelligence are clearly superior to what we have..

At least one top class centre half in the summer. I believe Levy quibbled over Benfica’s asking price for Dias - look at him for City now..

Reggie is a huge upgrade on Davies and late vintage Rose. Just need to sort out RB. Doherty has been poor. Wolves fans were all over the media telling Spurs fans that we’d bought a dud and had our pants pulled down.

Think Pope would be a good signing

At last we see Son - Kane - Bale!! Still think JM will revert to a more hard working front three when we play stronger teams.

Ill have your post in mind when I see how we line up against Fulham.

I haven’t wanted to post here of late as it’s been all doom and gloom in my house (re: football) and amongst my fellow Spurs fans. Still think JM was the wrong choice for Tottenham. However, plenty toplay for still and we aren’t gonna give him the tin tack anytime soon, so COYS it is....

Belting set of results last night - Villa, Leicester and Man Utd all dropping points. A win at Fulham tonight is essential, win that and we're not out of the race for 2nd to 4th. Would leave us with another game in hand still to put us 6 back from Man Utd and 5 from an out of form and injury hit Leicester, with one or both of Chelsea and Liverpool dropping points as they play each other tonight. It would take a good run of form, but not out of it yet.

COYS!

In other news, loanee Oliver Skipp has been getting rave reviews playing holding mid for Championship toppers Norwich - could be one to watch for next season as a deputy for PEH.

Us and Arsenal both allegedly in the market for a new right back, with Norwich's Max Aarons and Brighton's Tariq Lamptey the likely candidates.

Speaking of Brighton, Ben White talked about as a possible centre back signing in the summer. I've been really impressed whenever I've seen him play, either as a centre back or in midfield.

Called it. Fulham are playing a 3 man midfield (Reed, Lemina, Loftus-Cheek), so Dele Alli plays in place of Lucas.

Lloris
Doherty-Sanchez-Alderweireld-Davies
Hojbjerg
Ndombele ---- Dele
Bale ---------- Kane ------------ Son

Good lineup on paper, weak links are the full backs.

Doherty is a complete liability. Scratching my head wondering how we ended up watching that 2nd half from behind our sofas. Would love to know what is said in the dressing room at HT because so often we do come out defensively after the break.
Still. Clean sheet. Three points. Relief.

Agree, harsh on Fulham. Hope they stay up but they have to learn how to put the ball in the net and quickly
