The Ashes 2021/22

Burns' 34 flatters him. He was playing and missing a lot throughout that painful innings. And it's... 34. Most teams would regard that as a bit of a failure. But it represents a triumph for this guy.

In the same way his hundred against the Aussies flattered him but I think it was only me and littlebabyjesus pointed this out at the time - because, y'know, a hundred. It was horrendously full of playing and missing (and dropped twice). His technique means he needs to be the luckiest cricketer. And for a while it came off. He was always waiting to be found out.

Michael Atherton:
I do think England's selection, decision-making and strategizing on the nine days of this tour so far has been beyond bad.

“Beyond bad” Atherton is not one for being an arse.

England (confirmed): Zak Crawley, Haseeb Hameed, Dawid Malan, Joe Root (c), Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler (wk), Ollie Robinson, Mark Wood, Jack Leach, Jimmy Anderson.

England are 5/1 to win the next match. If you think that’s fair (I don’t) then 66/1 to win the whole thing seems not too bad. If they win the next one, the chances of carrying on to 2-2 would be better, and if they manage that, the chance of winning the final match are better again. If it goes 5/1, 4/1, evens, that would be one in 6x5x2 = 60, or 59/1. Since that’s the only path to victory, it’s the fair bet.

I don’t think this England team look like they’ve got a 5/1 chance of winning the next test though. 8/1 maybe.

This is the key for me. He played at the wrong ball so many times and the runs he scored seemed to be more by luck than judgement.

Good. That's the team I would have chosen from that squad.

Like geli, I would have been cross if Hameed had been dropped and burns retained.

Sorry to say it but the ashes down under is notorious for ending careers. I think Burns is its first victim.

Don't disagree with the maths but 66/1 for something that, excluding the relatively small possibility of draws, would be 7/1 with two even teams is quite good. Very good even. To set that in context, as the ashes runs on a 4 year cycle, it's something you'd only see once every few hundred years.

Dunno the recent stats but let's generously assume that there's an evens chance that at least one match will be a draw. In that case, the bookies are offering the equivalent of 3/1 odds on a single contest in which there can't be a draw.

Ray Illingworth has died. I'll put it on here as it's not worth its own thread.

He personified a lot that was wrong with English cricket in the 1990s. Racist, narrow-minded, unsympathetic to player problems.

An admirably stubborn player but a less admirably stubborn coach.

Rain, clouds and a surface that likely flattens as the match progresses according to McGrath. So, if Root wins the toss he’ll likely bat, the twat.

Well he did sack Atherton over ball tampering didn't he? The same Atherton who had to commentate on Steve Smith years later and for once stayed remarkably quiet while those discussions were being had on air.

Why the fuck don't they just do the toss while it's ever so slightly drizzling? It takes a full half hour from the toss to actually start. We could start as soon as the covers are off. Cricket's so stupidly weird sometimes.
