The American mass shooting thread

No mass shooting here either, just another normal day in the US…
Indiana child fires handgun found in sofa at Ikea
A six-year-old child in the US state of Indiana found a loaded handgun in a couch at Ikea and fired it, police say.

The weapon had fallen into cushions as a shopper sat down to test the sofa at the store in a suburb of the state capital, Indianapolis.

Nobody was hurt in Monday's incident and no arrests have been made. Ikea said it had expressed "sincerest apologies" to the child's family.

Police say the gun-owner did not notice he had dropped his firearm.

The owner continued shopping and only became aware he had lost his gun when he heard gunfire.

Active Shooter Reported at Maryland Newspaper

There is an active shooter at the Capital Gazette newspaper building in Annapolis, Maryland, local police and federal officials say.

Anne Arundel County police confirmed there was a shooter in the building, at 888 Bestgate Road. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said on Twitter that the "shooting incident" was at the Capital Gazette.

Gazette staff told The Baltimore Sun — which owns the Gazette — that multiple people were shot, a story on the Sun's website says. Police did not immediately provide information on any injuries.

Officers are searching the building. They could not immediately confirm whether anyone had been arrested.

Chopper4 footage shows people walking out with their hands up.

So fucking sad. America is fucked with its idiotic gun culture and the NRA should be treated as a criminal organisation.

The inevitable "thoughts and prayers" Tweet:

And the equally inevitable display on Twitter of anger and division:

Ad nauseam

True. It is the proverbial on-going car-crash.

However, it *is* going on. I've never thought burying your head in the sand is wise so I choose to watch what the crazy people do'n'say.

I guess that's why I'm on Urban too :D

I've often taken that view, but I've begun to rethink it. The problem with crazy is that it spreads. If you spend too much time taking it in, you can get a little unbalanced yourself.

Urban is enough crazy for me. :D

Yiannopoulos has quickly decided to issue a sincere apology in order to start to heal the divisions.

Don't be silly, of course he hasn't.

ETA: Especially hateful is his comment likening journalists to "vermin".

That is just nuts. It's like people have lost all reason. Confirms my view that Twitter is somewhere to stay away from. :(

The horrifying thing is that they haven't lost all reason. These are acts carried out by stupid people, inspired by clever people who have vast sums at their disposal and sophisticated means with which to do the inspiring.

See I don't want a Fuhrer. Or an untrustworthy looking 'winner' by some perverted standard. There isn't even any quality there. This, this system, and its current farting, bullheaded lack of decency is driving us down. But why? You still have to obey? These are ignorant bastards by any measure (I mean in terms of moral principles, conduct and integrity, but of course it goes beyond that). There isn't even any competence; yet shysters, grifters are fucking everything up. They are gulling people, upsetting them with faulty rhetoric.

Yes, society was fucked up, unfair, corrupt; the answer is not turn on eachother because of what some false friend said. Or to give up and just accept things will get worse, that some will have to be scapegoated. That solidarity and bravery is to be tossed aside. We've no right to countenance such a thing. Our ancestors wouldn't even give us the time of day if we did. Great strides and feats were accomplished on the back of decency, honour. There is no compromise with this movement.

Who do you trust? Autonomous people who fight for their communities and solidarity; or the fucking bitter man-babies who coin it in and stoke enmity? Who stand against every good ideal that has won out for centuries?

Be deceived and taken in by shyster nobodies. Or have some honour.

Supposedly the shooter's Twitter Feed here.

Several newspapers have identified him as the shooter.
Maryland shooting suspect battled newspaper in court and lost

Just one more nut job able to get hold of guns and kill people for whatever pathetic reason, but it's nothing to do with the easy availability of guns, it's mental illness, or the reporters weren't armed, or the beard means he's a Muslim .. or whatever crap excuses the gun lot can come up with.

Definitely sounds like an "ordinary" mass shooter with his own grievances rather than anything to do with Trump or Milo - also sounds like he used an ordinary shotgun, so most of the stricter gun control options that have been proposed might not have made much difference here.

Do they do this sort of thing in the UK ?
(I no longer watch UK TV news)
I gave up midway through the credits at the start.
