The American mass shooting thread

Got various americans to admit in Americas history people having their rights taken away or shipped off to camps the gun owners of America did squat as long as tyranny arrives in the Red White and Blue and picks on the other they did squat and will do squat.

Some potentially interesting figures in this piece that forms the basis for an upcoming book. Note for those who won't read beyond the headline, it's not an anti-gun control piece:

Schools are safer than they were in the 90s, and school shootings are not more common than they used to be, researchers say

Criminology professor James Alan Fox and doctoral student Emma Fridel charted the path of mass shootings and school shootings over three decades, from 1992 to 2015. They used a variety of government and nonprofit data sources, including data collected by the FBI, USA Today, and Everytown for Gun Safety, an organization that advocates for gun reform. Their research is the basis of a chapter that will be published in an upcoming book on school violence, “The Wiley Handbook on Violence in Education.”

They found that schools are actually increasingly free of mass shootings, which they define as a shooting in which four or more individuals are killed by firearms. “There is not an epidemic of school shootings,” Fox said in a statement about the research, noting that there were four times as many children shot and killed in schools in the early 1990s as today.

Not sure how significant this is, but could it be the beginning of the sort of cultural shift needed?

Florida school shooting: US investment giant pressures gun firms
The world's biggest investment management firm is stepping up pressure on companies that make and sell guns after the Florida school shooting. BlackRock Inc is considering offering investors the chance not to invest in gun firms, and is asking those firms how they monitor safe use of weapons. The US corporation said the Florida shooting on 14 February, in which 17 people died, required a response. It is the largest shareholder in two of the biggest US gun manufacturers.

I'ts sorta creepy and pathetic the way these grown men are talking about school shootings as they would as arm chair comandos playing Call of Duty. Yeah, you've got to neutralise the threat, total lock down, lay down suppression fire...

Wankers.

“You don't have to be a tier one operator or a classified marksman” its all nonsense.

That's a really interesting website.

Also found this where an ex-officer dismantles the practicalities of ROE for teachers with guns.

It's weird reading the comments on that article, seeing how dryly and seriously people are discussing it, as if it wasn't a completely deranged idea. The libertarian fucks seem to want it completely deregulated, 'let the schools decide'. Let's see how compatible that idea is with insurance and liability for schools.

I didn't look at the comments. Will have a look now.

It is interesting - though I am not sure how on one hand you can point to a decline in the number of incidents, and then on the other claim that the measures brought in over the same period of time haven't had any effect.

A 13-year-old boy planned to carry out a school shooting before he shot himself inside an Ohio middle school bathroom last week, police said.

The Jackson Township Police Department uncovered messages from Feb. 14, the day of the Parkland school shooting, to Feb. 20 on the boy's phone detailing an eight-step plan of attack at Jackson Memorial Middle School.

"I'd hurt and destroy something bigger but my schools an easy target," the boy wrote, according to a news release from Jackson Police Chief Mark Brink.

Messages reveal boy planned a school shooting worse than Parkland but instead killed himself

The right will go nuts, look at this Georgia lawmakers pull airline tax break after Delta killed NRA discounts

It’s so confused (effectively) “we will give you a tax break if you re-instate a discount for nra members”.

Just imagine the republican outrage if a democrat state offered a tax break to a company for giving black lives matter a discount, but the opposite is just fine.

US politics is so blatantly corrupt.

Might not seem like much of an advance, but the fact some traditional gun enthusiasts are re-thinking their stance is something.

An Illinois gun show bans AR-15 sales, landing it at the center of a national gun-control debate

Bear in mind though, this was in Northern Illinois - a Republican area, but not universally right wing. This would never have happened at a gun show in Southern Illinois, where people are actually doubling down, as they always do when they feel "threatened" by, well anything different from what they're used to. :(

That's quite a hopeful piece.

well there nuts but at least the wretched things are unloaded and have been checked and secured hence the ties so better than the take an ar15 for a latte crowd and some army units:facepalm:*

Dentists can play with short barreled automatic weapons a long way away from me

Florida Republicans just tried to give guns to cafeteria ladies and librarians

The Florida legislature is about to push through a deeply flawed gun reform bill that will ban armed teachers but craftily shifting the duties to carry firearms from just the police to the hands of some unlikely armed school personnel. This bill has 80% of the NRA’s ‘holy grail’ legislative wish to use Parkland’s tragedy to bring more guns onto school grounds, by arming librarians, cafeteria ladies, and all kinds of support staffers.
