The American mass shooting thread

Kind of typical American response though. "Duh, they should have shut the doors."

I've run enough events in various venues to know there's really no way to completely lock down the doors. There's always going to be someone who steps out for a smoke and props a door open. Or, props it open to carry stuff inside. Even with doors that automatically close behind you, you're going to get doors that will stick or not lock properly.

I'm just glad the Nashville police didn't pull an Uvalde and sit outside with their thumbs up their ass.

According to reports this morning, he shot his way through the glass panel next to a side door.

The police seem to think that she had training, going on the way that she shot at them.

Then there's this manifesto as well, which is apparently very detailed and has maps and sketches of what she was about to do.

She probably was taking testosterone (many seem to think they can see it in her facial physiognomy). I'm reminded of a woman's account of taking testosterone and how her thought processes became massively more sexualised and violent - it was kind of an alarmist article (I thought like a man for a bit etc!) but it did make me wonder about the conditioning of boys and men over the course of their lives that prevents them from acting on their impulses. I suspect if you haven't gone through that process, suddenly taking testosterone might provoke some surprising and hard-to-manage results.

On another point, if, as seems likely, this was a politically motivated attack, I don't think it should be viewed in the same category as other school shootings. If an Islamist did something like this, we wouldn't be grouping it with Sandy Hook, Columbine etc. Perhaps the closest comparator might be the Elliot Rodgers incel shootings but, even then, this is a bit different given the mainstream nature of the political issues.

As far as I’m aware the main effects of testosterone therapy (as opposed to the assorted “gym ‘roids”) are in the direction of being anxiolytic and anti-depressant.

Also, I don’t think I’ve even heard of a case of extreme violence committed by a trans man before this, whereas trans men are well documented as being at high risk of violence, so without some serious backup this looks dangerously half-cocked.

They think that or they seem to think that? For a lawyer you're really sloppy with language

It's what you might call a working hypothesis and so the language that I used reflected its provisional nature.
That's your working hypothesis? What a useless one it is. Rather than speculate on what the cops are thinking why didn't you say that you thought it possible hale had had firearms training?

But, if you want a hypothesis - here's one - it is interesting, going on the footage, that she appeared to be up for the fight with the police and chose to engage them in a shoot-out. That suggests some sort of pre-meditation, some understanding that they were the enemy.

You don't say

This is the young lady that received a message from the shooter before the shooting saying what he was about to do. What a horrible thing to spend her life remembering. She and her father immediately informed the authorities. She received the message a bit before 10:00 am and the police were responding to the school by 10:13 am. The reporter tried to make out that the police responded too slowly, but she wouldn't go for it. She seems pretty level-headed.

Shame on that reporter for trying to create a controversy where there wasn't one.

I spend too much time on twitter and I was dreading reading this thread as over there, there are a number of leftwing accounts who are basically saying it's hormones and the evil trans agenda. I generally keep away from the trans debate on twitter as it's completely poisonous so I was really sad to see my apparent comrades repeating far right tropes and talking points.

So can I just say I'm glad this forum is not like that. I am friends with a young ftm lad and it breaks my heart he might feel he is being blamed in some way for this monstrous act of violence.

They were just little kids and people use this tragedy to bash trans people before the smoke has even cleared. They're sick in the head.

from the same guy:
"Enough. I’m done playing games. I’ve seen the map. Done the research. A Trans Terrorist attacked a CHURCH. Yes, there is a small school on church PROPERTY. But the CORRECT take is that a Trans Activist Attacked A Christian Church. Christians: Wake up."

maybe just delete any link to that fucker.
