The American mass shooting thread

I know this is an odd thing to get hung up on when people are dead, but why are they dead naming and misgendering the shooter? He identified as male. Evidently, he used the name "Aiden" rather than Audrey. This looks very much like an elaborate suicide. To quote this story:

At 9:57 a.m., just minutes before the shootings, Hale’s former middle school basketball teammate received a message from Hale that read, “so basically that post I made on here about you, that was basically a suicide note. I’m planning to die today. THIS IS NOT A JOKE!!! You’ll probably hear about me on the news after I die,” according to News Channel 5.

Hale, whose post used the name Aiden, wrote, according to News Channel 5, “This is my last goodbye. I love you. See you again in another life.” The friend responded, “Audrey! You have so much more life to live. I pray God keeps and covers you.” Hale responded, “I know but I don’t want to live. I’m so sorry. I’m not trying to upset you or get attention. I just need to die. I wanted to tell you first because you are the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen and known all my life.”

The post continued, “My family doesn’t know what I’m about to do. One day this will make more sense. I’ve left more than enough evidence behind. But something bad is about to happen.”

I mention this not so much for the shooter benefit, but for all the other trans people out there who are being misgendered and being treated as less than. This is going to embolden anti-trans activists against all trans people. If he had gone off somewhere and just shot himself, he'd just be another tick on the trans suicide statistics.

Careful wording from police here from BBC news:

A police spokesperson told the Washington Post that Hale "is a biological woman who, on a social media profile, used male pronouns".

Sounds like they don't have firm evidence about Hale's identity so are going for being literal at the moment.

It's perfect for the RW media this then, if it was a trans man, because they get to be both misogynistic and anti-trans. Fucking awful.

But you know what, I'd really just rather we didn't talk about the shooter at all. I don't give a fuck what pronouns they used. As in other cases of mass shooting, I don't want them to be remembered. They have waived their right to sympathy by murdering children.

afaics it's really rather hard to remember the victims without at least some implicit memory of the shooter

Apparently he's part of a group that likes to bring heavy weaponry to fishing spots and file lawsuits if they are challenged by the police - I hope he accidentally shoots himself in the dick and falls over into a pile of fish hooks.
To do what with? Shoot the fish? I don’t go fishing, but always assumed the point was to fish with fishing equipment, not to machine gun the water.

Why couldn't the fucker just have blown their head off, rather than killing children to engender suicide by police?

It's extremely uncommon, which makes it more shocking. We're more used to male violence.
It is, yes. We are. But I think its a mistake to let ourselves be less shocked by it. Because it’s not less shocking, and this isn’t more shocking. Every single one of these events is utterly and equally shocking - in every context but an American one.

Well the shooter did identify as male, so maybe had a similar mindset to other spree killers, being as in thrall to the same ‘toxic masculinity’ as other young males

Quite possibly. But I don’t think the speculation helps. And I don’t think treating lethal male violence as somehow less taboo is helpful, or accurate. We aren’t talking about some testosterone fuelled guy kicking someone’s head in after a night out - but the cold blooded mass murder of totally innocent and defenceless people.

Its difficult for me to be objective around shootings. I have seen someone shot dead, and have lived with the fallout - which has been extensive. I know the damage it causes. There is no justification for a person who isn’t responsible (and accountable) for something like protecting livestock from bears to have firearms at home.

I don’t think American women can be given a pass here. They also largely support firearm ownership, and vote for those who make it too easy to access unreal quantities of horrific weaponry. This is only tangentially about male violence. It’s really about gun ownership, and a society that refuses to engage with its own reality.

She probably was taking testosterone (many seem to think they can see it in her facial physiognomy). I'm reminded of a woman's account of taking testosterone and how her thought processes became massively more sexualised and violent - it was kind of an alarmist article (I thought like a man for a bit etc!) but it did make me wonder about the conditioning of boys and men over the course of their lives that prevents them from acting on their impulses. I suspect if you haven't gone through that process, suddenly taking testosterone might provoke some surprising and hard-to-manage results.

On another point, if, as seems likely, this was a politically motivated attack, I don't think it should be viewed in the same category as other school shootings. If an Islamist did something like this, we wouldn't be grouping it with Sandy Hook, Columbine etc. Perhaps the closest comparator might be the Elliot Rodgers incel shootings but, even then, this is a bit different given the mainstream nature of the political issues.

They shot the windows of the doors and got in that way,

" They say he entered the school through a side entrance and began shooting."

"The suspected shooter allegedly entered the Christian school through a side entrance and went from the first floor to the second floor, firing multiple shots, police said."

you don't half post some bilge

There's no contradiction there - the shooter entered through a side entrance after shooting the doors

There's footage of the person shooting through the glass of the door,
