The American mass shooting thread

A Fourth of July parade, ffs,

The Highland Park Fourth of July parade ended in panic when shots were fired about 10 minutes after the parade kicked off at 10 a.m. Monday, striking an unknown number of parade-goers and sending hundreds of people running for safety.

Multiple people were shot. A Chicago Sun-Times reporter saw blankets covering three bloodied bodies and five other people wounded and bloodied near the parade’s reviewing stand.

aside from the about this is sounding quite grim

the area is quite a progressive place it appears

was that a reason for the attack

just to put this in context and i nicked this from Reddit,
after the events of yesterday in Copenhagen the NRA troll fuck wits where out in force

So let me get this straight.

  • Shooting happen in Copenhagen that kills 3 people. The last shooting happened back in 2015 and killed 2 people. Then again back in 1994 where again 2 people were killed. The only 3 instances in the history of Denmark of notable non gang related shootings that resulted in multiple deaths.
  • Pro-gun Americans use this example to say that stricter gun laws somehow doesn't work.
  • Less than 28 hours later, 6 killed and 24 injured in a mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois. There have already been 10 deadly mass shootings (and 13 non-deadly mass shootings) in Illinois since the start of 2022.
Where are all those good guys with a gun?

I'm sure the NRA shitheads will be quick to bring up the fact that Highland Park also has strict laws - the Supreme Court declined to hear a challenge to an assault weapons ban the city introduced after Sandy Hook, although that was before the Supreme Court became an extension of the NRA.

haven't new york just had one of their gun controls struck down?

Was tested here but the supreme court refused to pick it up

expect more to come from todays events :(

to be fair such paranoia has been whipped up that if any serious gun control was introduced in the US there's an argument it could do more harm than good at this point because it would legitimise the fears of people saying that the government is coming to take their guns away. 'It's my constitutional right!' etc

there's plenty of pro-gun leftists/democrats as well. a position i don't really understand tbh (although i can understand ppl thinking they needed to defend themselves)

Have we had ‘thoughts and prayers’ or ‘not the right time to debate gun control yet’? I see the NRA has actually capitalized on the fact the murder spree happened on 4th of July to ‘celebrate our hard won freedoms’.

At first, I was gonna give the NRA a pass, because they posted their crap before the shooting happened.

Pass revoked -

Meanwhile, state Sen. Darren Bailey, the GOP nominee for Illinois governor who was recently endorsed by Donald Trump, suggested in a video after the shooting that people “move on and celebrate the independence of this nation!”

As people waved campaign signs for Bailey in the clip, he did suggest praying for the families of the victims and law enforcement.

slimeball alert!!!

After serious blowback, Bailey’s office released a statement from the politician saying: “I apologize if in any way we diminished the pain being felt across our state today.”

“I am heartbroken by today’s tragic events and the pain and loss felt by so many. My intent was to pray for the victims and those affected by today’s tragedy and for the shooter to be caught and prosecuted without further loss,” the statement read.

In 2020, Bailey’s team held a fundraiser featuring a raffle for a semi-automatic rifle, Vice reported on Monday.

To be honest it doesn’t matter if they release their statement before or after another another massacre. It’ll always be the same.

Yes, though I would have thought they would modify it in light of the shooting.

They did not, they just doubled down.

It is as though the NRA approved of the shooting.

The shooter may have between 18-20 years old.

What part of the internet made him think he was doing the right thing?
