The American mass shooting thread

There's plenty of crazy to go around. I spent the weekend in a rural area and one lady I talked to was convinced that the US government is trying to starve us by manipulating the weather. The shortages we gave are deliberately caused by the government "to end our freedom."

She got this idea from TikTok videos that she says she trusts more than than the "fake news."

Out of curiosity, is it only Biden that can control the weather or could Trump do it too?

I think what's going on is that its more comforting to think that your fight for survival is caused by unseen enemies out to deliberately starve you, than it is to believe that the economic system is so impersonal that it doesn't care if you live or die. As you know, the economic stress in rural areas is becoming more and more difficult to navigate. It just isn't workable to drive 40-50 miles every day for a job that pays so little, even if you can buy a house for $5k.

If they were purely a gun safety group, I'd probably be a member. They've decided to be a radical political arm of the gun industry instead. They've also branched off into far-right political stands that have nothing to do with guns. They've attacked abortion rights, supported authoritarian candidates, and want an amendment to make burning the flag illegal. That's pretty far outside their lane, if they want to characterize themselves as a gun safety group.

The reason I asked was that some time back there were some surveys where NRA members were also in general agreement about the need for better background checks and stuff like in that poll Fox was talking about.

This was when they were still pretty batshit by most standards, but was before Trump, so maybe the moment to capitalise on that has passed.

aye since the 1977 and Harlon Carter take over it stop being a gun safety group and became a lobbying arm for the industry
and magnet for crazys and then their was the right of the right. Fox news and finally trump

should be declared a domestic terrorist organisation and the US would be better off

need more info but

A Uvalde school police officer whose wife was killed in the Robb Elementary School shooting was detained and had his gun taken away as he tried to enter the hallway outside the classroom where his wife lay dying, Texas' top law enforcement official said Tuesday.

Ruben Ruiz, an officer with the Uvalde CISD police department, was then escorted from the scene of last month’s massacre after having his weapon seized, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw told a state Senate committee. McCraw said Ruiz was detained and had his gun taken by other law enforcement officials, though he did not specify which agency did so.

I forced myself to the article, and reminded myself why I stopped reading about this tragedy.

If there ever was a situation where every single thing was messed up, this is it. I hope they teach new police just how fucked up it all was, .....

Totally, totally horrible and it upsets me that some may not have died if those in power looked after the situation properly.

I found this interesting. A state President within the NRA has resigned because he says the organization is afraid to investigate the causes of gun violence:

Despite being a member of the NRA for nearly 20 years and still being an advocate for the Second Amendment, Nollette said he no longer wants to support or be associated with the NRA.

In January, he elected not to run for president of the NMA again; and a few weeks ago, he resigned his lifetime membership to the NRA altogether.

In a letter to the NRA, Mike Nollett said that the association is “fearful of an objective examination of the root causes of the gun violence which plagues the United States.”

While he admits he does not know the cause, Nollett said he believes the NRA needs to support efforts to figure it out.

“If mental health really is a cause of gun violence in the country, and I’m not sure it is, you would think that they would support politicians that would be also supportive of those efforts. But they don’t even seem to do that,”

He also said he believes some form of gun control is necessary to address gun violence — something he and others call an “endemic problem” in the United States. =

I bet it isn't even a week before we hear he's getting death threats.

His mistake there was picking up the rifle to empty the magazine. Totally unnecessary and it was obvious anybody arriving on the scene could reasonably assume you are the active shooter.

Apparently he was picking it up to remove the magazine if you read the article in 4194, rather different but yeh still unnecessary
