The American mass shooting thread

I think Ohio might have more variation in accent than any other state - from Great Lakes in the north to Midwestern in the middle and Appalachian in the south - so guessing Ohio might be a way of saying "I think you're Americn but can't place you."

right, i was just about to say there is no ohio accent. there's an indiana accent, and a very marked south pennsylvania accent, but no ohio accent i've ever detected (i've known people from both cleveland and columbus).

I used to work in a call center, and sometimes we would get Americans.

I used to play "guess where the accent is from", and I was usually right. Florida is the easiest.

Two things -

1) the majority of all Canadians have the same accent.

2) there is a town on the us/canada border. The people on one side of the town had a Canadian accent. The ones on the other side has a very distinct NY accent.
the kids went to school together, all shopped at same stores, etc, but there was two accents in that town.

Upper Michigan especially, lots of Scandinavian settled there. Minnesota too.

last i went to montreal i saw that the road signs are bilingual on the US side for a good stretch, but go monolingual one foot over the quebec border :snarl:

Oh, definitely angry face!!!

The province is trying to make their language dominant, at the expense of Quebecers who are anglophone.

Last time I checked in, they were upset that families did not speak French at home. omg - Italian families spoke Italian at home!!! we must stop this!!!

Right now, the government is running ads to make sure that coworkers only speak French.

A while back, they made all street warning in French only. There is a tunnel under Montreal that was restricted to only trucks will non-hazardous materials could go through. The non-francophones did not understand and there was an incident. So, they started using signage instead of words. They used French/European signs, but still no one understood. Truckers were used to American hazard signs. There was another incident.

Right now, the anglophones are upset because they can only get marriage certificates in French. Don't really understand the fury, it is a piece of paper.....

it's fun to destroy peoples' feelings twice

“Then [the QAnon member] was like, ‘did you know that Uvalde has been closed for years? It was fake, it was all an act, it was actors and actresses.’ Then two more [QAnon members] came up and were like ‘none of these are real, mass shootings don’t happen,” Gonzalez continued.

i'd have thought that after alex jones got trashed over sandy hook they'd think twice before laying themselves open to law suits

think when you expecting a 105 year old man who had his brains blown out in the 60s to reappear and proclaim trump as the American Jesus.

you drank enough of the koolaid that not much else matters

he wouldn't be 105 as for him time stands still from 22.11.63 to the glorious day of his return. so jfk is still 46

And another.

The usual factors aside, the heatwave we're having can't help. Temps in Kansas are topping 110 F this week. It's exhausting if you don't have access to air conditioning and have to go to a shelter to stay cooler. Pack overheated people together, while under stress, and its makes all of the other problems worse.

Without wishing to play with semantics, is this really a mass shooting? or, and I'm by no means belittling the death(s), a case of an argument turned unnecessarily violent

Yes, the access to firearms enabled it, but it's not a mass shooting, not as I understand the usage of the term
Mass shooting is an ill-defined term anyway. Three shootings in one go meets some definitions. Definitely not a spree killing though.
