The American mass shooting thread

School shootings are mostly done by people under 18. This shooter got the guns for his 18th birthday.

If we can't get gun control, perhaps some parent control will work. Make the parents criminally responsible for allowing their children to use guns for anything other than hunting and target shooting. There was a case recently where the behavior of the parents was so egregious that the prosecutor charged them. Even if you only prosecute a few of the more serious examples, you'd put a scare through the rest into being more responsible in giving their children guns.

At the very least, it would be another way of chipping away the lies of the radical right, in this case, the idea that they're all in favour of parental responsibility.

I think it’s too late now for any meaningful changes on the gun problem in the US.

This fault is now too complex, too enmeshed and too fundamental for it to change.
The issue, the fault, the flaw is now so thoroughly a part of the the American character that it mirrors that in the individuals who throw these gun tantrums.

I think that if anything concrete had been achieved after Sandy Hook (which anyway was legislatively impossible because of the ways in which Obama was politically hamstrung) we might have gotten on the right track.

Similarly, Parkland could theoretically have engendered some kind of grass roots movement, if only because the naïvety and irrepressible determination of the kids might have pushed down some barriers. But again, it was impossible in practical reality.

But now, as from today, I suspect they’ll fall into resignation, just accept this being a normal and normalised part of American life. It’s already commonplace. How do you reverse that juggernaut in the face of capitalist inertia?

A lot of leftists and liberals argue, tbh not unreasonably imo that gun controls in the US would end up penalising POC etc rather than gun nuts and that they need Guns themselves to protect themselves from other gun owners. Probably true tbh but what the fuck do you do then. 'The revolution' isn't coming any time soon.

The fuck is happening there. Its really hard to have any kind of hope for the human race with this kind of shit going on.

Maybe we need to turn our backs on the American dream and say “Oh well, that didn’t work” and start again from scratch.

They are so self centred. They think the Ukraine war is about them and Biden, that climate change policy is a personal attack on them, that a virus emerging from China is somehow connected to American conspiracy politics.

Let’s just send them to their room without supper and let them sweat it out for a while. Put them on the naughty step for a time-out.

They won’t or can’t listen to reason or operate with any semblance of rational consideration.

Yep this happens a lot and this isn't a problem confined to one side of the US political spectrum.

Not all Americans.

I know.
I added an eta to say so cos I knew someone would say this.
I‘m half American. Yuwipi Woman is American.

As an aside, but I’ve been thinking of it a lot since this news broke...
When I asked my dad why he emigrated to the UK he had various answers depending on the conversational context, but one constant was him saying “I didn’t want to raise a family in a country where they felt able to shoot the president in the streets, where MLK would be gunned down.” While he lived I thought he was using a mixture of hindsight and parental showing off. Now, I think he was prescient.

Yes, it’s far too enmeshed now.

You can’t remove guns now without doing more damage, causing collateral harm.

you never know when it's going to turn up

Is that going to be enough though?

Hope so.

The onslaught of lies, hatred and taunting from the right and its fellow travelers isn't good for the mental health of a nation. And it's relentless in order to wear people down.

But you push people too far and you get resistance.

Feel it will get worse before it gets better, though.

That was actually my main concern with my earlier post about holding parents responsible for their children's gun crimes. You just know that some right-wing prosecutor will think he's going to solve "black on black crime" by prosecuting minority parents, when its mostly a social and economic problem related to poverty, discrimination, and lack of opportunity.

To be honest, I've been considering a move somewhere else. I see things going really dark in the US and the rise of a Christo-fascist state, similar to the Confederacy, and run by the same people. Since I have an elderly parent to care for, I won't be doing that in the near future so I may just have to find a place to hole up in for the duration.

If you look at a lot of our politicians, they're actually part of a group working to bring about a Christian nation. All it will take is to get one of these elected President and they'll take the gloves off.

Didn't the Confederacy seek to secede from the Union rather than take it over?

As for Presidents, well you've shot a few of them... gun availability isn't all downsides.
