Sue Gray and therese Coffey nominated for a peerage

I was perfectly serious when I said that that photo was her one redeeming feature. Pissed up, drink spilt down her front, she's suddenly decided it's a good idea to smoke a cigar.

The single thing she's ever done that I can relate to.

Surely it is the ultimate in "bent" to be a member of the House of Lords on account of what one of your ancestors did? Before the creation of life peerages, which I believe dates back to the 1960s, the titles awarded to Sue Gray et al would have passed to their children, and the children of their children, and so on.

I disagree - as fundamentally absurd as it is for someone to get a seat in the Lords because of what one of their ancestors did, at least it is out in the open (as in we know who they are and who will be sitting there after them) and at least the ancestor did something in the first place.

Now however we have the vast majority of people getting peerages for reasons that would never stand up to honest scrutiny. Why on earth is Claire Fox there?

After what she did? Tories are vile.
Surely this isn't too difficult. This isn't about how vile Coffey is. It's about the values that you have.

So a person is overweight and has been known to like a drink and a smoke? Are any of those things that you think are worthy of attacking? If the answer is 'no' then you don't attack them.

It's like back when Ann Widdecombe was minister for prisons.

Pregnant women were chained to a prison offer when they went to hospital to give birth, and Widdecombe oversaw that policy, but some people thought that her worst crime was being overweight and not dying her hair often enough, so that her grey roots showed.

On the other hand, right-wing racist Brigitte Bardot, former French actor, was regarded as rather gorgeous back in the day.

I think we need to start an investigation. Why is Claire Fox a peer?

It might have been "extreme centrist" which needs no axis.

No, it was definitely “far centre”.

I took it to mean “so far to the right that you’re practically in the middle”.

“Extreme centrist” would be meaningful, if inaccurate.

I don’t think it was you - got the impression the person was a moron at the time..

Hasn't the idea of ending the HoL been around for quite some time? Seem to remember it being mooted during the Blair years.

Unless it's a slow process; deliberately filling the place with as many unsavoury characters as possible until it implodes or the people are driven to distraction and raze it to the ground.

A fair number of the current members of the House of Lords called for it to be abolished before they were appointed to it.

If she wants people to respect her then she shouldnt have done vile things in her time as a tory MP.

Starmer pledged to abolish the unelected second chamber at some stage. Lol obviously.
Blair promised the same and then actually did do reform of it, so half a job which pleases no one.

I think a few Labour leaders of the past have said they'd get rid of the lords only to mysteriously lose their nerve once in a position to do so. I think its just too useful for the state as a whole and lab leaders always try to set the party up as the permanent state but will always be considered the second option for the monied classes, the auditors we have in once the owners sons have fucked UK plc by sacking half the workforce and selling off the pension funds for coke.

Trouble with the house of Lords is it's completely anachronistic, undemocratic and has no place in a modern society. Its open to abuse, for example when Borris Johnson made his illegitimate daughter a peer.

And yet, given the nature of the appointments the quality of debate and work done by members is far higher than that of the commons and almost any other legislative chamber int he word.

It needs to go. But it would be good if there were a way to ensure any replacement could avoid just being stuffed with more party selected politicians

How about a people's gathering that represents the people, without prejudice or shady lobbies

Fair enough.
