Snooker 2023 - 24

Trump really bottled that final, the silly sausage. 4-0 up only to lose to O'Sullivan and give him a free black.

Murphy continues to be as unlikeable as usual. He's not quite as horrible as Ali Carter, mind. I was rooting for O'Sullivan HARD in that final, and I'm not a GWAAARN RONNIE type to begin with.

Llandudno is where we always used to go for holidays when I was a kid. Never went to the copper mine in the Great Orme though I'd like to have seen that :(

Anyone watching this?
Some good stuff earlier today between Slessor and O' Donnell.

Gary Wilson has just taken the first three frames against John Higgins including a 147 in the 2nd frame

It looks like O'Donnell's picked himself up a bit after this afternoon.

Wilson was getting properly pissed off with the table, although his mannerism as the red drifted towards the left middle pocket off a colour-pot split was entertaining.

ITV4 Players' on first round Trump vs Wakelin (who?), early yet but Wakelin playing really well and 1-0 up.

eta: oo Ding v Higgins on ITVx :)

Missed this until your post yesterday.

Reminders installed.

www.snooker.org says "And for the first time, table two will be streamed live with commentary on ITVX" which is good to know.
Always nice to have a choice, innit.
Didn't sink in that ITVx means online in your post (never use ITVx, so I suppose that's why)

Wakelin and Ding out according to the snooker.org link above. £10k each, though.

Mark Williams v Mark Allen and Gary Wilson v Hossein Vafaei this aft  and
Tom Ford v Ali Carter and Ronnie O' v Zhou Yuelong at 7pm

Allen v Wilson just finished ...

I wish Phil Yates would just stfu

Snooker is a sport that should only ever be commentated on by ex- or current pros. Even the pros I don't like much like Murphy are better than the likes of Yates. Worst is Rob Walker. He's a decent compere and interviewer, upbeat and a bit dorky but full of enthusiasm, which is fine for that role. But he adds zero value to commentary.

On comms, I want them describing what the players are planning to do next, the side they're putting on, how hard a shot is, if that was a wise shot choice, etc. Only current or former professionals are up to the task.

Mrs A was saying exactly this whilst we were watching Ronnie Vs Selby earlier. His hyperbole adds zilch to the commentary.

Zhang was amazing for first five games against Higgins. Really calm looking and really smooth action even when he's getting ready for the shot. He did a couple of really clever safety shots, put the white right in the corner - looked like it was going in the pocket but the two cushions hampered just about every shot out of it.

Bloody hell hadn't noticed the commentator yep cog grindingly poor, particularly since snooker commentary is normally excellent.

Zhang doing the same against Selby now.

4-0 at the mid-session interval. Superb earlier - average at best now and it looks like Selby might be about to pull it back to 4-4, ffs

Zhang won then

The first five games he played against Higgins were pretty well as good as any I've seen. How's he going to do against Allen?

Eta: he's off again - I was trying to avoid saying it before but how he gets down on the shot really impresses me: a single smooth gentle motion, through to when he's hitting it. I'm sure other players do that, too, but I'd never noticed it so much before. He was introduced first game as 'Zhang Anda the Chinese Panda' which I thought was a bit disrespectful because he's not a thin person, but I totally see it when he's getting down for the shot :)

He's come from pretty well nowhere this season, I really hope he wins this. Apparently one of the interviewers said he was surprised at how well he is playing, Zhang said "me too":D and as commentator is saying they nearly all are going dead centre of the pocket.

Anyone watching the Riyadh Season World Masters? The WST top 8 and 2 wildcard players.

It's on Eurosport1 (free) on SKY 413. I missed yesterday (forgot and was out half the day anyway). It's on DAZN too (paid) - dunno about terrestrial/Freeview.
I'm currently watching highlights from yesterday of the Williams v Higgins frame

Dunno about this Golden Ball nonsense -what do we think Urban?

If you don't know - there's an extra ball on the table at the start of the frame - it is Gold in colour. You can only pot it after completing a 147 and you then get an extra 20 points! So that's why all the posters have 167 on! Where's the Golden Ball going!!??

It remains on the table if there is the possibility of a 147. If that changes, a break ends, someone pots a colour that isn't the black, the Ref removes it. It lives in the middle of the baulk cushion at the outset of the frame. Hitting it with the white is a foul unless you have scored 147. Mental?

Anyway, there's an extra £395,000 to be had by the first player to do this! They're calling it 'getting a Super-Maximum'

It must make safety play behind the baulk balls much more attractive, with a higher chance of snookers. Good to watch, for me. Will see if I can find one of these matches online.

So I welcome our new overlords, even though the extra money and points aren’t interesting at all.
