Six Nations 2021

Yes I surprised myself by watching all of it - really good analysis of which most went over my head. Interesting that the editing of the one where we weren't ready ( ) cut a few seconds from the broadcast signal. Also the lineouts leading to a lot of England tries so the Welsh didn't kick for touch. And excessive number of penalties given away by England.

I really enjoyed the game anyway, and it could have gone either way. Deserved win though I felt. I'd have liked to see more running with the ball by England's backs.

I am allergic to Squidge so I didn't watch.

I think, rightly or wrongly, the French referees are less communicative than English-speaking referees. Moot point as players need to adapt to the referee, they are the boss that's why we call them "sir".

For try 1 I would have expected an English speaking ref to have communicated more. The trouble is that the England team also expected this and didn't adapt. England were exposed on their right wing, they were similarly unprepared for try 3, the tap and go.

Try 2 - no-one seems to agree on this one definitively. Would hate for a world cup to be decided on this, I know the ball didn't hit the ground but for me if you fumble / drop the ball and don't regather with your hands it is a knock on. For me the appropriate law needs to be tightened up to avoid the ambiguity. Still you play to the whistle.

Is he the one who packed so much information into a short video that it gave you a headache?

If so he seems to have stopped doing that (apart from the fast forwarded bits which are still fucking incomprehensible but don't give you a headache).

Watching that second try again, nobody thinks it's a try on either side. They just run the ball over the line out of habit. For that reason alone, I think England were hard done by. If it had been the other way around I'd have been pissed off. Doesn't sit well.

For the first try, if that had been the other way around, I'd have been slapping my head bemoaning the dozy Welsh. England got caught napping. Tough shit really.

I don't see any issue around communication at all. Its not incumbent on the ref to ensure that every single England player is in position when time is on; its incumbent on him to ensure that sufficient time has been given for the talk to be had and for players, if alert, to take up the defensive set. As Barnes says, England were seeking to suck momentum and advantage out of Wales by doing their huddly, water carrier shtick. They snoozed, they lost.

As an aside, I thought Gauzere's reffing was mostly excellent. He was clear as hell as to what he wanted to see at the breakdown and enforced it consistently and equally. Wales got pinged early doors for exactly the same offences and quickly learned and adapted. The speed of recycling England enjoyed during their attacking forays was frequently down to Wales refusing to commit forwards to the breakdown, effectively conceding the battle on the deck to ensure discipline won out. That England failed to notice this and carried on exactly as they were says a lot about their mindset.

So will England do Wales a favour and turn over France? France havent won in twickers for 16 years? England have something to prove....predictions?

I'm thinking France to win by 7, but I should probably wait to see exactly what dog's dinner of a backline Eddie is putting out to have a firmer prediction.

The Sarries players have actually played some games now, haven't they? Given Jones' loyalty to them I assume they'll all be in the starting 15 if available, so that might spark things up a little.

Well Daly has been dropped. Malins is in. Tbh given that France has the size and power and the midfield match up favours France. I think France have the edge in this one. France by 8+

France backline looks awesome. A 6-2 bench split suggests they’re going to hammer at England all day, a lot of defensive sets coming up.

I was at this game in 2019, England destroyed France and Jonny May got a hat trick.

CVC will broaden rugby union's global popularity by restricting viewers from free-to-air to private equity paid subscribers.

A decision on whether the Six Nations championship will continue to be broadcast on terrestrial television will be made “within weeks” after confirmation of a £365m five-year investment deal with the private equity firm CVC. Officials are insistent, however, that CVC is “a force for good” and will play a crucial role in broadening rugby union’s global popularity.

I think this decision just sounded the death knell for welsh rugby. A very short sighted decision enticed by the lure of easy cash which will eventually kill the sport.

just don't get the planning who the hell is going to buy a sports subscription for 6 weeks of rugby in the spring and 3 weeks of rugby in the autumn

or just get sky to add it to now tv for 15 quid a game so less people watch each event

fucking short sighted money grab that will kill of plenty of kids getting into the sport by seeing the 6 nations and thinking i'll have a go of that

if the 5 nation as it was at the time was not free to air i would never of asked my parents to sign me up to the local rugby club

:(

which to be fair was about the same time i feel in love with F1 because it was free to fucking air

Checked whether there's a petition - there's a few but all look closed now, were started a while ago.

aye its been going for years and always seem likely to happen

Covid made it a reality because it money is an easy sell to the struggling RFU unions of each member of the championship

hopefully at least each home nation can retain some rights to showing games but don't think it will be a reality in England at least

Ben Morels is an arsehole who been trying to push this into fact for years

Fucking bollocks.
That might well be me and International Rugby done tbh. I shall prolly hang on for the next world cup, but maybe not even that.

Anyway, Saturday; I'm waiting for France to really pull out the stops and I'm hoping Saturday will be the first sign of what they can do, winning by a decent margin. To be followed by crushing Wales, then scraping by Scotland.

Then I'm away to support the closest local club to me and fuck all this high level moneyball.

I mean Ben was the guy who got us all watching basketball in the united kingdom

no wait the bubble had burst by 1998

There was a basketball bubble in the UK?
Slept through that one.
Not that I give a fuck about basketball you understand

I'm losing the will with Farrell (and I want him to do well, after Joe he's a good fit) but putting Murray on the Bench against Scotland just screams try to build a quick lead and bring Murray in to slow the game to a crawl. I think we'll beat Scotland but only because we've got the psychological advantage of not losing to them in a while.

eta the above is bollocks as Romain Poite is ref. 80 mins of coin tossing ahead on Sunday.

Yes for Wales this game came at the right end of the run of matches. Italy have had their moments but lack any consistency as the phases of play happen.
