Rugby World Cup 2023

Wales team named for their quarter final against Argentina on Saturday - looks to be full strength bar Faletau. Dan Biggar is back and starts.

The team has almost 800 caps so you’d think the experience favours them but Argentina seem to be coming into form after a slow start

I see Borthwick has gone with Farrell, another bore-fest in the offing. Part of me hopes we get knocked out so we get discouraged from this style and I can just enjoy what's left of the comp!

Didn’t think England team is named yet, but the leaks (which are always right under Borthwick) indicate Ford is dropped.

New Zealand have named their team, more or less full strength with a change at left wing for an unknown reason - Mark Telea got two tries against France, there are hints are it’s for disciplinary reasons. Odd not to see the impressive Cam Roigard on the bench. Also riding the pine is Damian McKenzie who looked great against Uruguay :hmm: but who has often failed to convince against the best teams. So New Zealand are copied what England did v Chile - 3 playmakers - though it’s unlikely all 3 will be on the pitch together.

Getting very excited about the quarter final lineups. Should be four cracking games.

Gutted for Faletau, though. Wales' most important player imo. And probably his last WC.

South Africa team named - looks more or less full strength, with a conventional 5-3 bench split, and a team picked for pace I think with the rapid Reinach at scrum half, and Libbok the iffy kicker at fly half. de Klerk and Pollard are on the bench as is Willie Le Roux who is brilliant at making the backline pur.

France have named their team, DuPont starts, a 6-2 bench split and looking like full strength.

England team named in 45 minutes

England have named Marcus Smith at full back, with Freddie Steward dropped, and Farrell at 10. Elliot Daly and Jonny May, the wings who are too slow to score tries, are on the wing. I am not sure about this team.

864 caps in the starting XV and another 438 on the bench including George Ford. It’s experienced certainly but doesn’t convince

I don't rate Smith in international play, it just doesn't suit him fsr and you'll keep him on too long.

Yeah internationally he doesn’t get the time and space he gets in club games, particularly if he’s starting. It may well work against Fiji if they play a bit looser, and certainly when a game opens up in the last 20 mins when everyone is knackered but wouldn’t say against Ireland. Feels a bit of a sticking plaster

That said I haven’t really ever rated Steward positionally as a full back (great under high ball, decent career but far too often in the wrong place when other teams break the line) so maybe Smith will be unveiled as the next Christian Cullen on Sunday

Bonkers to leave McKenzie out, I know they're blessed with riches but he's been outstanding. Start him and then bring on a a Barrett after 60 surely.

I've never actually listened to the lyrics but I can see why it might be a slightly more divisive choice than Sweet Caroline

I'm in two minds. It sounds great when everyone's belting it out acapella during the chorus, and an anti-war track is very apt right now. But then it's so specifically about sectarian violence it seems a strange choice for a celebratory singalong for a team that represents the whole island.

Then again songs get used in the weirdest context all the time which goes to prove most people don't realise or don't care much about a song's 'meaning'. Like people dancing to 'There She Goes' at weddings or GOP conventions playing 'Born In The USA'

Zombie's a great tune. I don't know or care enough about Irish politics other than it takes up far more column inches than it should and that the person who is raising my son without my consent is a passionate IRA supporter alongside being a passionate Irish rugby supporter so this kind of thing pleases me, imagining the fuckwit biting his lips off every time Ireland win and that blasts out.

That video's brilliant too.

edit: whats the NZ one? Do they have one?

In another context people playing "you do something to me" as their wedding dance, listen to the lyrics you idiots! Maybe we need another thread!

so I’ve listened to many podcast read as many articles as I can and still think this is a 50/50 game tonight. If we win and break the quarter final hoodoo great but if we don’t we played some stimming Rugby, we’ve beaten the Boks and we’ve done what all but one team does, we’ve failed to win the WC.

We moved back to Ireland in August and I can honestly say that the country is going through an Italia 90 like festival of joy.

Ireland by 3is my tentative prediction.

As for the other games I predict wins for Wales, And England. My head says Boks win but my heart says France.

Yeah there’s been a lot of talk that South Africa can do France.

I might not be surprised if every game is won by less than a score

I'd like to see the Irish win. Them or France.

Looking forward to this weekend of quarter finals. Have a horrible feeling NZ & SA will come good. Would love to see a NH team win it.

I’m English but know it won’t be us (will be lucky to get through v Fiji tbh). Unsure if Argentina have played themselves into a bit of form or not? Wales still should have enough. Then it’s the two huge late games 😬…too close to call, though as I said previously, have a feeling both the Bokke and the Kiwi’s will prevail.

Enjoy

Fucking craicing choice of a song. shit moves on

Good luck today everybody especially
Wales against the cunits who did over Port
Stanley Post Office

Just...no. None of them were even born. I've been to Argentina and you'd be hard pressed to find a lovelier nation of helpful people.

And I'm supporting Wales.

I've lived in Argentina and yes, it's a magical place. I would love to live there again. I also love Wales so not sure who to support here but one thing is for sure, neither one of these is gonna lift the cup unfortunately. The actual final is kicking off at 8pm.

Missed first 12 mins as was at a Premiership game - Saracens absolutely hammered, they ain’t shit without their internationals. Theo McFarland of Samoa played for them though and was pretty good.
