President Biden; impact on UK, Ireland, Brexit, trade etc..

He's now planted a tree and is talking about his grandfather.
Seems very relaxed and way fitter than Mickey D who is struggling to keep up with Biden.
Ringing the peace bell now..bit of a chat ..Mickey D is off to get the dog...dog is as big as Mickey D.

And they're off to lunch.
What will they be eating...?

I'm not saying that it was a sole reason . But he was very much aware of racism and wanted change...and he was a civil rights campaigner. He was very supportive of Martin Luther King. He announced that major civil rights legislation would be submitted to the Congress to guarantee equal access to public facilities, to end segregation in education, and to provide federal protection of the right to vote.

That was very significant.
but jfk had - according to wikipedia - outspent nixon greatly in bribing black congregations

Is tracing family history such a big thing in America?

I know nothing concrete about my family background beyond my grandparents and tbh discovering that my great grandfather as Norwegian (rumoured) and that another was an illegitimate son of landed Irish gentry (also rumoured) would be a real 🤷🏻‍♂️ moment.

But perhaps it would I explain why I often eat pickled herring dunked in Guinness?

The Election of 1960

By the 1960 presidential campaign, civil rights had emerged as a crucial issue. Just a few weeks before the election, Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested while leading a protest in Atlanta, Georgia. John Kennedy phoned his wife, Coretta Scott King to express his concern, while a call from Robert Kennedy to the judge helped secure her husband's safe release. The Kennedys' personal intervention led to a public endorsement by Martin Luther King Sr., the influential father of the civil rights leader. The publicizing of this endorsement, combined with other campaign efforts, contributed to increased support among Black voters for Kennedy.

Across the nation, almost 70 percent of African Americans voted for Kennedy, and these votes provided the winning edge in several key states. When President Kennedy took office in January 1961, African Americans had high expectations for the new administration.

But Kennedy's narrow election victory and small working margin in Congress contributed to his cautious navigation of civil rights issues. He was reluctant to lose southern support for legislation on many fronts by pushing too hard on civil rights legislation. Instead, encouraged by staff, he appointed unprecedented numbers of African Americans to high-level positions in the administration and strengthened the Civil Rights Commission. He spoke out in favor of school desegregation, praised a number of cities for integrating their schools, and put Vice President Lyndon Johnson in charge of the President's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity. Attorney General Robert Kennedy turned his attention to voting rights, initiating five times the number of suits brought during the previous administration.

the jfk presidential library are hardly likely to flag up the way he obtained the votes he bought, but the excerpt you supply is more equivocal than you on his support for legislation

Might be worth reading some more on him? His speeches are worth a read.
Many are on the same website.

Here's another site with interesting facts on JFK and that election in 1960. The blue leaflets campaign etc.
He certainly targetted black American votes and he visibly supported Martin Luther King. When he was arrested JFK and his brother actively intervened for his release...
He certainly gained support from MLKs supporters by doing so.

Ah..they are now driving into Farmleigh...where Leo will meet him and then they'll have a bite to eat.
He must be pretty hungry by now.

Nope. They're not eating there either. Pathetic that the man hasn't even been given a coffee since breakfast. Leo is doing the smarmy chatty taking over shoite. 🙄

I should qualify this.

The US had been a British colony. As such Irish Catholics were always going to be on the bottom rung. They were very much lower class barely getting work and detested by other Christians...namely Ulster Presbyterians and Puritans and others. Remember the KKK hated Irish Catholics as much as they hated blacks.

So its not surprising then that JFK a strong civil rights politician became the first Irish Catholic president...not deifying him..he had his flaws...but he did fight for civil rights and for equality for blacks.
JFKs election campaign was subjected to queries on whether or not he would be under the influence of Rome. There was a fair bit of sectarian commentary at the time.

Have to say he looks pretty healthy ...

Tbf though he's older he does seem to be a lot more sprightly than the Tangerine Turd. The guy behind him looks like someone you wouldn't want to meet down a dark alley.
As he not brought Mrs B with him then?

Well Biden nearly came a cropper watching under 12s camogie and football matches as a ball went straight past his head.

No. He brought his sister...
Mrs Biden is busy prepping to go to the coronation.

Biden just finished his speech in Dail Eireann. Standing ovation. Actually a very good speech with plenty references to Irish Poets. Seamus Heanys wife was invited to be there personally by Biden. Very relaxed and very personable. He didnt rush..and met everyone. Past Taoisigh...and all political leaders and senators..Jerry Adams there too.
Pledges of support, investments, jobs etc thick on the ground.
His catchphrase being that everyone deserves dignity.
All very ideological and nostalgic.
But the reality for quite a significant number of young Irish people is that their futures are uncertain and many will never have secure home.
These are problems that should be sorted if a government put its heart and soul into respecting the dignity of those who are homeless and those who are facing eviction. I wonder if Leo talker about those problems with Biden? I doubt it.

Anyway. He is now on his way to Dublin castle for a fancy dinner.
