Local Elections (not that London) 2024

Lots of canvassing from Labour, who I think are concerned by a two-pronged threat from the Libdems and a popular former Labour candidate who's standing as an independent. Those are the only leaflets we have had. Tories stand no chance round yer, and whilst I reckon the Greens will build on their recent breakthroughs in Exeter, it won’t be in my part of the city. No other candidates standing. (Yes, my Reform voting bit was just a joke. Aren't I funny!)

Still pretty comfortable for Labour in Exeter and in my ward. Greens made one gain, but the bit I didn't see coming was a win for an independent standing on an anti-LTN platform and a Libdem gain by doing similar, in their typical opportunist fashion.

Heavitree?

Exactement. Not my part of town and I don't drive, anyway, so perhaps not something I gave much thought to. Was aware that there had been some friction to say the least, and had seen anti-LTN stickers across the city, but assumed it was a minority who would probably vote Reform or Tory. Not so, it seems.

I don’t really know Exeter, while I go there a few times a week I have never lived there so no real idea of on the ground issues. Feels like Exeter's poor bus service hasn’t helped the implementation but I doubt much would shift the dial for the most vocal opponents

Reform is still just a start-up private company which is only interested in media attention and kidnapping the Conservative party. It doesn’t have a party machine like the LDs or Greens do.

This minor argument aside, I don’t see much cause for joy in their vote share. I’d rather see a unified right soundly beaten.

Sure it's still a start-up private company ATM, but that could change easily if they start picking up council seats, UKIP was late getting involved in local elections, they certainly achieved much more success than the BNP ever did, in a far shorter period of time, gaining over 300 councilors by 2013 in just 2 years of focusing on local elections, and local parties started to be established. They even became the largest opposition party in six English county councils in the period, another 2 years on and they took control of Thanet District Council, their first majority control of a council. Farage left the party in 2018, to set up the Brexit Party, and that's when it fell apart.

But, to dismiss the idea that Reform could not do similiar over the next few years, having learnt from the UKIP experience, and when the Tories are in a lot more mess than when UKIP started to do it, seems a bit odd to me.

Yes, they want to kidnap the Tory Party, but if they can't, there's no reason to believe that if they tried hard enough, they could continue to grow, and become even more of the danger. I hope we ever see a minority Tory government supported by a few Reform MPs.

They are a danger, and need watching.

No arguments on the last point, the hard right is always a danger because they are the hard right, and Brexiteers will be a constant enemy of economic growth. Reform definitely has the capability to evolve into something very troubling, although quite likely under a new name and with a new structure.

Fucking state of this. Quote taken from the BBC. Utter cunts.

Labour are briefing they believe they are on course for defeat in the West Midlands mayoral race, with support for independent candidate Akhmed Yakoob, who stood on a pro-Gaza ticket, a major factor.

A senior party source said: "It’s the Middle East, not West Midlands, that will have won [Conservative candidate] Andy Street the mayoralty. Once again Hamas are the real villains."

theres been several comments of this kind I've seen this morning but that ones the worst ^^, out there with 'shaking off the fleas' from earlier in the year.

I voted for Green on both counts. The Yorkshire Party have the whiff of xenophobic Faragism to me
I assumed that but the stuff in their election material all sounds sensible enough.

And there's nothing dodgy on Wikipedia or their site that I can see.

The Yorkshire Party is founded on the social democratic principles of subsidiarity, dignity, community and cooperation. We believe that by moving power closer to people, we can empower communities to be ambitious and allow individuals freedom for creativity and enterprise. We believe service to humanity should be the foundation of government and that as members of society we share a responsibility to participate in building a region of fairness and opportunity.

The Yorkshire Party was set up to campaign on the idea of greater devolution for Yorkshire and its five million people.

Founded in 2014, the Party is pro-devolution and pledges to judge issues on how they will affect Yorkshire, its people, economy and environment.

The Party wants Yorkshire to have decision-making powers through a devolved assembly within the UK; to build a more democratic, engaged and accountable society and to rebalance the economy away from the South East, creating a thriving Yorkshire that works for all the people who have chosen to work, study or live here.

The Party is represented on one principal local authority in Yorkshire having councillors on East Riding Council – with a host of parish and town councillors across the county.

The only parallel with Farage I can see is in the focus on local autonomy, but this is also something shared by anarchists. I'd never heard the term "subsidiarity" before.

It sounds like a good principle, though.

Labours friendly journos getting on the action.

Imagine for a second "Near the synagogue" if a council seat under Corbyn had been lost. Or sticking the blame on Likud for being the real villains.

Nearly a decade of absolute insanity means the Muslim community experiences breathtaking racism and it's totally normalised.

I note that on the BBC running tally, the Conservative are getting a kicking, hardly unexpected.

I also note that the Conservative losses are not universally being picked by Labour. At this moment 12:44 03/05//2024, the Conservatives have lost 150 seats, of which Labour have picked up 60. It has so far been a better night for Independent candidates, they have picked up 49 seats.

All these radical Muslim Hamas loons going off and voting for the, er, Green Party. :hmm:
