Local Elections (not that London) 2024

we went to vote first thing this morning,

As I got up to leave the house, mrs mx handed me a piece of paper and said don't forget your voting card.

I know having your voting card is not a requirement of voting, but I took it and stuffed it into my pocket.

We walked into the voting station..

"Have you got your voting card?" the perfectly pleasant voting person asked.

Yes, I replied, and handed over the piece of paper mrs mx had had given me.

"Do you have photo ID"

"Yes" I said and showed my driving licence.

At which point, she called the "presiding officer" over and gave him the voting card, saying this is mr mx wcfc.

The perfectly pleasant Presiding Officer(that's what it said on his name badge) looked at the voting card, looked at me and asked my address, which I gave correctly as No.7 Myroad. By this time I was getting a bit pissed off, thinking wtf is the problem here? He then looked at mrs mx who was behind me, and asked her her name and address, which she gave as mrs mx No.7 My road, by which time we were both a little bit spooked.

I think by then the presiding officer had realised there had just been a cock up, and handed me back my voting card, saying
"Is this you?" with a quizzical and slightly amused look.

The voting card I had handed over was my mother in law's voting card (she lives with us).

I just said "Oh fck, that's my M-i-l's voting card".

There was much hilarity. We voted.

“If I am ever asked, on the streets of London, or in any other venue, public or private, to produce my ID card as evidence that I am who I say I am… then I will take that card out of my wallet and physically eat it in the presence of whatever emanation of the state has demanded that I produce it.”

Boris Johnson, 2004

Looks like Reform are doing better than expected in Sunderland, polling 32% in one ward :(
Too early to be coming to any conclusions, but this pessimist is pessimissing
looked like a straight switch from tories to them, so hard to give too big a shit. It will be slightly more complicated than that, but it's still all a massive fuck off to the Tories

Just back from verifying votes in the Devon and Cornwall PCC election (the count is tomorrow). Verifying is basically checking votes in the ballot box matches the ballot papers issued and putting in bundles of 25. From a few polling stations there were hardly enough votes for a single bundle.

Easy but tiring. I quite enjoyed it, a few shockingly racist things written on ballot papers “stop the boats, immigration is betraying the white working class” that sort of thing.

Next time I do it I will bring a flask of coffee and not do a 10 hour day at work in the office (unavoidable today!).

What do the Tories do to get back that vote and how ugly will it get against a feckless Labour should they win government?

Reform voters risk letting Labour win next election, cabinet minister warns
Back to the results from Sunderland now, and Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris says the results in that area show "if you vote Reform, you get Labour".

He tells the BBC: "It's a very straightforward equation for people at the next general election.

"If they want to vote Reform, they'll end up with Labour MPs, and they'll end up with a Labour government, and then they'll end up, probably, with everything they didn't want to vote for based on the profile of Reform voters."

Here it comes.

I realise these elections aren’t very exhilarating but Kuenssberg is no Dimpleby, she lacks charisma, keeps making mistakes and seems half asleep.

I can’t see me watching bbc for the general election if she is anchoring the coverage

I don’t think I’ve ever seen her on the telly. I certainly wouldn’t recognise her in the street if she walked past me.
I tend to stick to print and internet words for my news though

Hadn't thought of watching BBC - just turned it on and there are people with placards looking silly

This is why I stick to reading words. I don’t have to look at their faces or hear them talking. It’s too much to bear.
me neither - can't listen to them on the radio either they're just such slimy scumbags when they're interviewed, and in charge.

Tories losing seats but more than half going to Indies, Lib Dems and Greens.

Apparently the Tory vote is going down by the amount of Reform vote but Labour aren't making significant gains there.
