Israeli forces storm Gaza aid ship, and beat people on board. Fatalities reported.

You never answered the question about sanctions on south africa johnny.

You want to focus on some leisurely sanctions half applied against SA. The first arms embargo was put in place in the early 60s. Apartheid ended in the mid-90s.

You want to ignore the more stringent, more modern sanctions, such as those put in place against Iraq.

I don't care if you're signed on or off. It's easier when you're signed on cos it's real time rather than Johnny catchup time.

But if I'm signed on, you might actually get questioned about the meaning of your asinine and irrelevant comment about the Canadian Navy.

Canadian airforce and navy :)

Does the Canadian navy extend beyond the internal lakes? And if it's patrolling the sea ... wtf, to be effective it must be the biggest navy in the world

She sure did. And I've been asking her what she thinks the consequences will be with some of those demands.

The question is what would Israel think would be the consequences? Surely if they think these measures would cause suffering for their citizens they should comply or they are to blame for that suffering?

I suppose, if you were of a mind to, you could say it's a bit like having a gun pointed at you.

I'm more than happy for you to question me about the objectives of the Canadian Navy :D (If they're not policing the internal waters, where are they focusing seaward)?

Without getting drawn into the plusses or minuses of the Canadian Navy:facepalm:
Both sides in this situation have made complete cunts of themselves.
The protesters knew that this "breaking the blockade" action would have consequences, and probably violent ones at that. They were clearly offered other options such as being escorted to a port and having the contents of the ships inspected and (I can only hope) delivered due to the very public nature of this protest. The footage provided by the Israelis (if not interfered with) clearly shows that some of the people on this "peace mission" came looking for a fight...which they got.
On the other hand, the Israelis basically commited an act of piracy on these same ships as they were (it appears) well outside of the 68 (?) mile zone that they had chosen as their territorial waters. At the very least this is stupidity, some would also argue criminal. Why the IDF would not have waited for the ships to be in Israeli waters then simply disabled and towed them into port without all this bloodshed is beyond me...
The images of both parties that I have seen are disturbing, and I feel that the more reactionary elements of both sides have now accomplished what they were after, which is more discord.
Discord is after all the name of the game in all this Israel versus the rest of the Middle East situation...
And no, I do not want to be dragged into the whole "Israel right to exist/old borders/Palestinian refugees and their own role to play/Zionist agenda/antisemitism/religion/argument".
Just so sick and tired of seeing how the multitudes ON BOTH SIDES suffer while the politicians make careers out of all this.

This Thead is disgusting.

It started from a low point,
And decended into,
Urban ego clashes.

I wonder why ?
At least to me, the thread could be summarised ...

Palestinians: Are we not human too, your brothers and sisters?

Canuck & co: Fuck no! You're a bunch of untermensch and towel heads.

Since the botched raid on Monday, Israel has striven to portray its troops as coming under unprovoked attack by activists with links to militant Islamists.

Omar Faruk Korkmaz, of the Turkish humanitarian organisation IHH, which helped to organise the flotilla, and which Israel has claimed has links to Hamas and Hezbollah, said his organisation rejected the term "Islamist". He said that Turkey was an Islamic country, and the IHH had no political agenda in any other country
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jun/02/flotilla-raid-turkish-jihadis-troops-israel-claims

The supporters of these claims all echo the line that Spymaster has been peddling repeatedly - blaming the deaths on those who resisted the Israeli commandos and claiming the charity IHH has links to terrorism.

The Free Gaza Movement, which has organised eight smaller attempts to break the Gaza blockade by sea – five of which succeeded in landing – rejected the allegation of an extremist presence on the Turkish ship. "Every person on that boat was a civilian," Greta Berlin said. "The terrorists on board those boats belonged to Israel."

Free Gaza was "honoured" that the IHH had joined the coalition behind the flotilla, she said. "They are a very respected organisation."

Every coalition partner was responsible for drawing up the passenger list for their boats. Berlin said she had no idea how the IHH put together its list.

Asked if Free Gaza had any regrets about mounting the flotilla in the light of its outcome, she said: "None at all. The Israeli government should have the regrets. We knew there were risks – Israel is a vicious enemy. Israeli soldiers came on board looking for a fight."

The police told the lawyers at the Adalah legal centre for Arab-Israelis that 17 people were being treated at a police medical facility.

The health ministry said that 24 others are in various hospitals across the country, while the medical condition of 23 other injured activists could leave the country.

Israeli authorities have still not provided a list of names or locations of the injured, no official numbers or list of the deceased, and that there is still no official count of the numbers of detainees or their locations.

For a long time, antisemitism said that jews were bad people who get up to all sorts of bad things.

Then, mid century, they get their own state.

Now, here they are, acting like bad people who get up to all sorts of bad things, apparently.
Disingenuous, Johnny; the criticism of the Israeli state is based on its actions. It is no different to criticism of other colonisers, such as criticism of the Dutch in South Africa, or Europeans in North America. In fact, the parallels are instructive. In short, Israel is criticised not for behaving like Jews, but for behaving like colonisers.

The Israelis now want us to believe there were catapults on board with the words 'Hizbullah' written on them

A quick search on that particular spelling shows it's a favourite with the Jerusalem Post, Debka file, anything with Daniel Pipes as director and the Israeli government.
In Turkey, the spelling is usually Hezbollah.

that's really quite pathetic on any kind of level...they had catapults so we had to shoot them dead.

Still playing the terrorsit card then, the cunts. :(

Grey power for Gaza
The key figures of the Free Gaza movement are all women of pensionable age, who came out of the 1960s protest generation

They are the generation who protested in the 1960s and have girded themselves again to campaign for Palestinian rights. The Free Gaza movement, which chartered the Challenger yacht as part of the flotilla that was attacked by Israel on Monday, is led by a group of women of pensionable age.

Founding members of the organisation, which is also operating the MV Rachel Corrie, include a US-based 85-year-old Holocaust survivor, Hedy Epstein, and a 76-year-old grandmother originally from Bolton, Mary Hughes.

The four activists running Free Gaza's communications and legal operations from Cyprus during the flotilla are all women aged between 65 and 85.

"Part of it could be because we are children of the 1960s and we came out of the anti-Vietnam movement," said Greta Berlin, 69, also one of the founding members. Speaking from Bolton, Mary Hughes's brother, Brian Thompson, said he had not heard from her since an email last week. "Mary isn't a political person. This is not an anti-Israel stance she is taking, it is a humanitarian one," he said.

This is from an actual reply from the Israeli consulate:

The incident that occurred three days ago was the result of an intentional premeditated provocation by forces with connection to the international terror network of Al-Qaeda. These groups were providing support to Hamas, an Iranian proxy on Israel’s southern border. and its terrorist enclave in the Gaza Strip. Hamas has fired more than 10,000 missiles at the State of Israel, and it is amassing thousands more. For this reason Israel maintain a legal maritime blockade.

Shame on you, JohnnyCanuck for again declaring those on the thread opposing Israel are basically anti-semitic

Yalçın Şalal, who was aboard another ship in the flotilla, the Gazze-1, said they faced maltreatment at the hands of Israeli soldiers. “There were always guns pointed at our heads. We saw that guns were being shot on the Mavi Marmara and did not resist. A soldier hit me with a rifle butt, and my hand was injured. While we were detained, they also treated us poorly. We wanted water and food, but they did not provide any. They treated us like dogs,” he said.

Noting that they were asked why they had come to Israel, Şalal said they were forced to sign a document ensuring that they would not travel to Israel again.

Israel says their soldiers opened fire only when they boarded the Mavi Marmara and came under attack from peace activists onboard, but Tokalak says events transpired differently.

“They started shooting directly at the Mavi Marmara. They didn’t care if it was the front or back of the ship,” he said.

Yücel Köse, who was also on the Gazze, said they were very close to the Mavi Marmara when it was attacked. He said the soldiers used force to detain them, although they did not resist. “The ship was fired on. They [the soldiers] threw the injured into the sea. I heard that the soldiers were angered by our friends’ resistance and had thrown them into the sea,” he said. Explaining their transfer to prison, Köse said they were taken in armored vehicles in groups of two or three. “They deprived us of food and water,” he said.

An activist onboard the Gazze-1, Yaşar Çılgın, said they were forced to sign a document attesting that they would not travel to Israel again. “We have been deeply affected by the incident. We were forced to sign a document saying we will never go to Israel again,” he stated.

Lobbying in Parliament - Get your MP to sign EDM 127

Today, Foreign Secretary William Hague made a statement in Parliament in response to an emergency question on the situation in Gaza. Hague answered a number of questions on the blockade of Gaza, the EU trade agreement with Israel and boycotting Israeli goods, and the treatment of flotilla passengers detained by Israel from MPs who are sympathetic to the Palestinian cause.

Over 3,300 people have already used our lobbying tool to send a letter to William Hague demanding a tougher response to Israel. It is vital to keep the pressure up.

Please ask your MP to sign Early Day Motion 127 - Israel and the Gaza flotilla.

The motion, which has cross-party sponsorship, condemns Israel's attack on the aid convoy, supports the UN's call for an independent enquiry, and demands an immediate end to the blockade of Gaza.
