Without being inside the minds of the people who died, it's impossible to know their motivations. I've tried before in the thread to determine why some people here are so angered and horrified by the suggestion that some aid workers were either prepared to accept, or to seek out, martyrdom.

Once again, I come back to the nature of our society, and how so many of us can think of no higher good beyond the preservation and promotion of our own lives and our own selfish interests. As a result we cannot conceive of the idea that others might be prepared to give their lives for a good cause. And maybe it angers, because it suggests that we've become a lesser, more shallow and much more selfish society.
