Israeli forces storm Gaza aid ship, and beat people on board. Fatalities reported.

I believe the IDF had already fired "warning shots" before the vessel was boarded. It was night, how did those on board know where the fuck those rounds were going?

People were sleeping on deck. Firing indiscriminately like that on such a vessel is a tantamount to intent to murder the civilians on the deck.

I posted a video earlier (the first of the two I posted). It shows you the situation on board the Mavi Mamara. This was broadcast on Al Jazeera openly, so the IDF cannot say they were not aware of the civilians sleeping on deck.

Then how handy the protesters/aid workers were doesn't come into it.

Well it does. Regardless of the legality of the Israeli action, the "defence" seemed to be undertaken by a handful of nutters. The other 500 odd aid-workers were presumably content to stay below deck out of harms way, content with a great media victory.

Once the troops left the helicopter the journey was over for that ship. What good did resisting them do?

Why do you choose an emotive, derogatory term like 'nutters' to refer to those on the ship who resisted?

I doubt they went in offering a bottle of wine and some flowers to the aid-workers; if a load of armed nutters turned up in your room in the middle of the night would you just hold up your hands up and grin? I'd be straight into the washing up for a kitchen knife, especially given the IDF's reputation for being bastards.

A survivor of the incident now says that the IDF opened fire before boarding:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jun/01/gaza-flotilla-eyewitness-accounts-gunfire

"The operation started immediately with firing. First it was warning shots, but when the Mavi Marmara wouldn't stop these warnings turned into an attack,"
They just interviewed a women who was on the boats, she claimed the same, she said "they started firing as they approach us by boat" this was on Middle-East Business report (BBC World).

I am assuming that the people on these ships are now being illegally held by the Israelis as they were unlawfully detained in the first place

You realise that the aim of resistance isn't always to give teach someone a good fisty lesson, yes?

I doubt Rosa Parks got much joy from her stand at the time fwiw. Same goes for many a protest - it's not instant gratification you know

The fact that you think the Israeli's action was in any way justified speaks volumes about how fucked up the situation is.

Who here wouldn't have tried to beat fuck out those f13 commandos if they started attacking you?

The daft sods should think themselves lucky no-one on the ships being invaded thought to tie off an abseiling line to a cleat or rail, or they'd have lost a helicopter or two.

Whereas the masked folks jumping on board dramatically for no real good reason were just utterly sensible, restrained types I guess.

Wanting to get aid through and to support fellow human beings are not the marks of 'nutters' imo. You're trying hard to play Devil's avocado here, but frankly you're coming across like a tryhard dumbo, or perhaps someone with an unpleasant bias.

Comment from a thread here:

Anyone else heard this?

Hardly a surprise if true, be interesting to see how the Israelis act with the next convoy given that they're unlikely to start on the Turkish navy, no matter how stupid the IDF have shown themselves to be thus far. But they'll need to prove a point regardless (we'll still do what we want regardless).

Because it seems a particularly apt term for someone who'd attack an armed commando with an iron bar, mebbe?

I think scared and trying to protect yourself, would be better than nutter. I know I'd do what I could to defend myself in a violent situation like that.

I hope the cunt who got thrown into the sea died. I hope he died in pain.

Too fucking right I would (probably without the grin).

Then you've got more faith in the IDF than I have. As well as a greater assumption that you'd know what the fuck was going on in the middle of the night in international waters when a load of gunmen appear.

Defending yourself and those around you is wrong - it goes against the interests of those who seek to defend the powerful.

You should offer your surrender as soon as possible. In fact even better than that, do nothing, express nonchalance, express your desire to wait for all the evidence ever, express faith in the conscience of hardened bullies, and also wait for even more evidence about anything that matters, before actually thinking anything other than ''democracy' is a good thing'
In fact spend your whole life waiting so that you don't ever think or do anything at all. That's honourable.

Defending the weak and dying against the cruelty of bullies - that's indefensible.

Time to let a few loose.

or just someone in fear for thier life after being woken up by rubber bullets

Easy to be killed by a baton round too, though, so you might not get to wake up, especially if they're deployed through direct aim and in close proximity. A body hit can rupture organs or your intestines fairly easily under those circumstances, and a head hit will bust even the hardest skull.
