How do you have your kebab?

Well I had this bizzare interpretation of a kebab in a fine dining restaurant last night. It was alright, but pretty tiny. Mostly went as I know it's something OH has wanted to do for ages and we can't afford in the UK. I'm more happy in the budge places.

I'm fact we're going back here to tonight. A main is literally 10 cheaper and gives me an excuse to try lots of stuff. The meat on bread thing was less then 50p

Does shawarma belong in this thread? Because I recently (re)discovered a local Lebanese place which does an amazing large mixed shawarma wrap, that absolutely blows out of the water any kebab I've had previously.

Most definitely. I'd say the donner meat in Turkey is similar to good shawarma I've had in the UK. This thread needs pics. :)

Didn't get a photo of lunch, but was well off the beaten path. They didnt speak any English or me Turkish, but with the aid of pointing I got donner... In a soft bap. Was pretty good and less then a quid.

Definitely!

Since moving back to South London I go for shawarma as the donner is the usual kind. I miss North London kebabs (and north london drinks) but that's it. And shish/taouk.

I would also include halloumi and falafel tbh. Especially with bread. :hmm::cool:

Next time I order from there, I will try to remember to take a pic and post it. My birthday is coming up soon, so I'll have an opportunity to treat myself.

Oh for sure, there are plenty of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern/N African variations on a theme, I can't speak for everyone but I for one am very happy to hear about (and see pics of!) any and all of them with their regional variations. Egyptian Kababs are also ace (with tahini ofc).

Around the turn of the millennium, I worked nights for two different companies near Old Street, and there was a late-night outlet with amazingly good kebabs, given that most of their customers appeared to be chemically assisted revellers who would, frankly, have settled for anything. The meat was good -- best to wait for a shish to be cooked, but the döner was edible. Chicken and lamb. Along with falafel and hummus, for days when dead animals were a bit much. Fresh and abundant vegetables. A choice of garlic or hot sauce. What more could you want?

We moved to Victoria, and I pined. Then we moved back, and of course the first thing I did was make a beeline for the best kebab shop I'd ever known in London. It was still there, but perhaps it had changed hands. At any rate it was no better than any other purveyor of cheap food to the indiscriminate intoxicated.

I have never really recovered. I'm not sure I've eaten a kebab since. Maybe once, when there were freebies at work, but that doesn't count.

Aye, I lived at the Old Street end of Kingsland Road for much of the '90s and there were some fantastic kebab places, the one opposite where I lived was bloody amazing (have not found anything that even comes close near where I live now) and there were some really good sit down restaurants (mostly Turkish or Kurdish run) further up in Hackney.

Have you tried EFES or Meyden near C.Town station? I like both of them.

Kebab and chips is literally my healthiest balance meal nowadays

I love having chips with my kebab instead of a flatbread. Although it seems that not a lot of places will offer such on their menu. I'm sure that most places would do so on request, but I'm hesitant to ask in person or gods forbid over the phone, and most online ordering isn't that flexible, so in those cases I usually order the chips separately.

I've had sit-down meals a few times at Meyden and their food is excellent, they do good lunch deals. Haven't tried Efes yet.

They are a bit of a different beast to the one I used to go to where I lived back in the day though, in terms of being open at 3am and selling beer under the counter out of hours (and I think other things too) if they knew you. The good ones here are proper restaurant type deals :D

I thought donner meat and chips was pretty ubiquitous?

The one I used to go for at the kebab place I mentioned earlier (in the '90s, it doesn't exist now) was the mixed grill, fuck knows how I ever managed it once let alone regularly, no way could I eat that much food now - it consisted of lamb shish, chicken shish, lamb doner meat, chicken doner meat, kofte, grilled kidney, massive salad (with the usuals - lettuce, red cabbage, tomatoes, cucumber, chillies etc) - all that came in one container, not in a pitta. Then there was another container of chips. Then there was a large slightly oval pide put in the bag on top of the containers of hot food to keep it warm. Chilli sauce and garlic sauce.

OMG feel like I am going to die of overeating just thinking about it.
