Goodbye Mayday, hello UK day.

I think it's a really good thing to have a day to celebrate your country!!!

I LOVE Canada Day....all that red and white everywhere and people being happy to be part of our nation....LOVE IT!!!

Well you need it in recently-formed artificial countries like Canada. A national day is like a slap of wet clay on a crumbling adobe wall for the Canadian nation state.

Well, that was random!!!

Out of curiousity, why are we crumbling? Right now, national pride is at an all time high.

They do in my little part of Canada. It's a really big thing, second only to the Highland Games.

Yeah I've heard of this. Same with the USA, they take their cultural heritage quite seriously and really go for st andrews day, as well as st patricks day etc.

Like Random says, it's because they are quite young countries. I saw this thing on tv about a celebration in scotland and it was mostly american tourists who went. They were saying they like to celebrate their heritage but scots generally take it for granted so don't make a big deal.

Don't worry, mud houses are perfectly good dwellings, they just need a bit of upkeep.

Shame to hear about the national pride, though. When Canada grows out of national adolescence hopefully that will clear up, like acne.

anybody who already gives a shit about mayday will continue to hail it in the manner they see fit. Those who don't give a fuck either way will continue to not give a fuck. Vapid nonsense.

The existing bank holiday calendar is a bit unbalanced, to be fair.

Yeah, but us there any reason we can't have an extra one in October and keep Mayday as well? IIRC most EU countries have way more bank holidays than us anyway.

And given that everyone will be unemployed by next May does it really make any difference?

We live in igloos, you twit!!!

Thanks for your concern, but Canada is doing quite fine.

They can do/say/rebrand/redesignate or whatever they feicin' well like to 1st May, it is, and always fecin' will be

International Workers' Day

It will always be may day to me e.g. Morris dancing, may queen, beltane, e.g. the actual folk tradition

Moon23 in "fuck the working-class" shocker!

Most Morris dancing was a working-class culture originally. A lot of it still is, although I fully appreciate there are a load of stuck up freemasons in a lot of the cots world sides. I just don't drabe my working class folk tradition in the ideology of Marxism.

I fucking hate morris dancers. They turn up, uninvited, at your local pub then make a fucking racket and dance around in a manner entirely befitting a shower of total cunts. Then they demand money from the unsupecting punters and proceed to spend that money getting heinously pissed as if they needed the help of booze to act like wankers.

They'll most likely spend their time in the pub inflicting themselves noisily upon the locals who would altogether prefer that they dropped dead of syphillis at the earliest conveniance.

They'll then, and this is my favourite bit, drive home. Cunts.

nope, friedmanism's more your style

Have you recently been troubled or handled in an inappropriate fashion by a Morris dancer recently, Spooky?

Their continued insistence on inhabiting the same planet as me constitutes, in my view, the most heinous physical and psychological cruelty. A cruelty which would stand unmatched even if I were to hunt down and violently murder all of their extended families.

Have you seen morris dancing? It's just so shit.

then your cup of freedom is filled with ashes and the meal you set before me is another choice-to-chains.

Costswold, btw.

Plans unveiled:
Plans to scrap the May Day bank holiday in England and Wales for alternative dates have been outlined by ministers.

Under the proposals, the holiday would be moved to St George's Day in April in England and St David's Day in March in Wales, or a Trafalgar Day in October.

Ministers said the move would lengthen the tourist season but trade unions said it would disrupt firms and staff.

At a guess this will be another forest sell off type thing. Big excitement. Government backs down but screws everyone over anyway whilst we weren't looking.

perhgaps this will silence the whining ED, EDL, BNP,UKIP and other rent-a-moaners who claim st george is not venerated enough (was a turk anyway)
