Goodbye Mayday, hello UK day.

FFS, the ideologically obsessed fucking loons. The excuse about tourism would make (a tiny bit of) sense were in not for the fact that in May people might spend some money in the UK while in October people will easyjet off to southern Europe.

If this goes ahead, I'm calling in sick on May 1st anyway with a bad case of workers' solidarity.

Axeing Easter might be better, actually. Then you could institute a couple of extra bank holidays which fitted in more neatly with a fixed spring term.

The French have about 17 equivalent bank holidays. The UK gets eight. What about storming Strangeways and then get nine?

Nobody in scotland gives a fuck about st andrews day :hmm:

All the tartan tack shops and the politicos in Edinbro do!! :D As a friend said about St A's day 'who the hell wants a day off in November??!!??' October ain't much better! Twats! - the condems.

The abolition of May day rather than, say, Easter Monday (lets not upset the Church) has not just a message re the workers holiday but also long associations with Paganism, Beltane festival, the coming of spring - it is a longstanding celebration day in this country and I think this is symbolic of everything he is doing - a destruction of things many people here hold dear - libraries, the CAB, the list goes on and they are all for the chop if this little shit - unelected shit at that - has his way

Do we even get a day off? :hmm: I didn't know that.

Yeah I'm sure the american tourists love that shit :D

TUC response to bank holiday proposal:
Commenting on government proposals to cancel the May Day bank holiday and replace it with a UK Day in October, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said: 'There is strong support for an extra public holiday as the UK has the stingiest allocation in Europe.

"But the last thing we need is for the government to mess around with established bank holidays that workers and businesses have built their schedules around.

"A few Tory backwoodsmen have a bee in their bonnet about the May Day bank holiday because of its association with international labour day. In fact May Day is a traditional British celebration dating back to the fourth century.

"The government would do well to rise above this backbench grudge, put the needs of employers and their staff first, and scrap the idea altogether."

Think he was some greek dude, I do know more about it but it's buried deep and I'm tired so not gonna dig. Google him!!

I don't really care enough to find out :D Which proves the point that no-one in scotland gives a flying fuck about this guy (well at least I don't)

If they think there's too many public holidays in the spring, they should abolish the one at the end of May: unlike Mayday, it's culturally meaningless.

This UK day won't work - it will be seen as just another bank holiday. These politicians just can't get it into their heads that in this country we don't do national celebrations - it's as simple as that. Remember Gordon Brown wanting us all to display Union flags outside our houses, because the Americans do? And Thatcher wanting to replace May Day with a Winston Churchill Day?

It must be great to be a politician - getting to force your fantasies onto millions of people.

what about cross dressing auto erotic asphyxiation day ? A sure fire winner with the tories/CofE/MI5 Id have thought .

The one at the end of May is Whitsun.

Getting rid of one of the Easter Days would make more sense; not getting rid of any days but adding one extra would make even more sense. There's no obligation on any companies to observe an extra bank holiday, and even for schools it'd just replace an inset day and/or get bundled in with half term, so it doesn't make any difference really.

This sounds like Citizens Day that the Home Office were toying with the idea of a few years back, that was meant to be in October too and be about being British etc...wonder what other rejected policies are being dusted off for use by this government?

Whitsun

Whitsun (Also Whitsunday or Whit Sunday (from conflation of Whitson, "white Sunday," with wit, "understanding"; -tide, "season"; alternate, obsolete spelling, Qhythsontyd) is a festival which originated from the pagan celebration of Summer's Day, the beginning of the Summer half-year, in Europe.[1] In France and England it took on some characteristics of Beltane.[1] Whitsun was later incorporated into Pentecost in the Christian calendar which is the seventh Sunday after Easter and commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples of Christ (Acts of the Apostles chapter 2).

I think it's a really good thing to have a day to celebrate your country!!!
