Glastonbury 2009

Must have tempted fate yesterday, just had my emails confirming i'm working again this year, woohoo!

What time's the urban meetup again? Will try harder to make it along this year, was watching a small Levellers acoustic set last year.

Cinema Field is now crew camping. There's no outdoor cinema this year and the indoor cinema has moved to the Acoustic Field. Paolo999 has more on GlastoEarth

Also been reading elsewhere that as well as there being no Leftfield this year the Jazz Lounge & Late'n'Live are also disappearing. :(

Aww :(

I bet it's lovely weather and perfect for late night flicks too. Typical.

May have to re-think the camping, normally we're up at the top of Hitchin Hill, but if the Cinema's moved we'll be miles from anything there.

It's going to be cancelled due to swine flu. William told me.

Yeah, 'strue, I've also 'heard' from 'somewhere on the net' that the whole of the UK's population will be under quarantined house arrest   by late June :p because of the well established SWINE FLU PANICDEMIC OMG LOL!!!1!!1! Shit!!!! :D

It will have taken its toll and we will have all got better by then.

*seals windows and door and calls in pre-emptive sick*

From what I read elsewhere, fence build proper starts today. Some posts were put up and panels have been 'ready like dominoes' for a May 1st kick off. I love seeing photos where stretches of the fence start to appear, glinting in the sun :)

And there's more of it this year - 'Beer Village' (WBC crew) comes in from the cold. :)

Is anyone coming from Northumbria? Or did he say Northumberland? Are they different places? :hmm:

Anyway, firky needs a lift :)

I'm nearly sure that Northumbria/Northumberland are the same.

There's a reasonably active liftshare forum on the Glastonbury subforums at efestivals, well worth a try there, I think there are links to other liftshare sites too. I'd be surprised if there wasn't someone driving down at least from Newcastle, and firky was definitely registered on efests a while back.

I tried the Glastonbury liftshare thing but it was all people looking FOR a lift.

And some of them sounded like they were looking for love aswell.

I got really good results from the Glasto forums lift share last year, made some good friends who were all otherwise going it alone...
Patience is key, there's plenty of time yet...
:)

Ah, OK, that's poor :(

That was the efests liftshare forum was it? Or do you/jontz mean the Glastonbury Official Site thing?

Just thought it was worth a general explore is all, never used these places myself.

There may be other liftshare forums/sites around that might be worth looking for?

Oh, you poor, sweet man :( (((gerry))) Hope you're ok :(

Nonsense! Was quite fun actually, i'd been baking on site for 5 days, and that evening it finally started raining, we had beers, and the Levellers were some of the friendliest, laid back and least bother chaps to deal with for their set. Was played as a warm up for their show down at the Leftfield I think, and there's even youtubeeo of it.

Part of the main set (with 'crowd' shot) -

'Beautiful day' done at the last minute by request -

I enjoyed it anyway. :)

Nick Davies responds ;)

All that 'report' does is cite a very dodgy shock horror Sun story -- I've seen the original, which is very high on speculation and very low on fact. The Sun has a long rack record of citing unnamed 'sources' that are very little more than MADE UP

My guess : the Sun probably asked some Govt spokesman to speculate off the record on the possibility of a Glastonbury cancellation under extreme circumstances, then ramped up the speculative reply into something more sensational by failing to quote the extremity of the hypothesis in their original question.

Then the Sun story gets quoted elsewhere -- including in the Guardian online I believe  -- and the 'Glastonbury to be cancelled' idea spreads cyber-virally like Chinese whispers.

It's COMPLETE BOLLOX! :hmm:

Chances of Glastonbury really getting cancelled are somewhere between zero and less than zero IMO.

Think about it. If Glastonbury gets cancelled so will all the big horse races, Wimbledon, the FA Cup Final, all other sizeable gatherings. You'd have to have a scenario whereby everyone was practically under house arrest for it to happen ...

:)

Well all I read was the Guardian story which just had Glastonbury organisers quoted as saying they'd be daft not to have a contingency plan for such an event. Which is true.

Nothing more to the story than that really

Fair enough and I completely agree, tis a story out of very little

(that link Badger quoted fails to make clear enough how insignificant it really is, IMO)

At one point there was one online Guardian version (perhaps edited since I saw it?) that cited or at least mentioned the Sun story .... in any case it seems fairly clear that it was the Sun's antics that got this story off the ground to start with.
