Glastonbury 2008

Trench foot ...

abv said:
Hey, don't forget, I'm the bloke who on leaving his house in 98 looked back at his wellies and thought to himself "It was muddy last year, I won't be needing those this year".

Trench foot was brilliant.

Excessive drug intake is the only cure ...

short term, anyway :p

It hit the spot. One of my friends found me at three in the morning burying one of my hands in the mud, complaining about being two-dimensional.

:)

I suggest these:

It's actually quite sad and says a lot about you that you want it to be shit and for people who have been looking forward to it all year and spent a lot of money to have a bad time.

Bit pathetic really.

Where did I say that  I don't want you to have a bad time. In fact your experience may well be improved by taking along the above item.. it can be a bit wet at Glastonbury you know

I was thinking that too. :)

Still, it WILL be sunny. IT WILL!!!!!!!!

But I'm still taking wellies. ;)

Wellies are a bad idea. Take Bee's advice and use boots. Buy them now and break them in 1st though.

Wellies at Glasto = bad blisters + really rank rotting feet.

I think my 97 boots are still in my folks' shed, complete with mud. Might dig 'em out next time I'm down their place. Wellies are lighter though!

You're just so doom and gloom about it and seem to revel in the thought of it raining/being crap etc.

I find wellies really uncomfortable and hot. I don't really have any decent boots and I'm not buying a pair for 1 weekend a year which is the only time I'd wear them.

I'll take an old pair of really comfy trainers, wellies and flip flops. I have got a pair of boots but I don't really like them, they're like Cat boots but not as sturdy.

You can pick up ex army para boots for bugger all, once you've tried them you'll never wear anything else. Break them in properly, wax them well and you then have something that will keep your feet dry in any conditions and be as comfy as slippers...

stuff that's designed to withstand wars and keep the people fighting them reasonably comfy is always best. stands to reason

You were being OTT with that pic or at least it looked like it. You can manage with less than waders  so stop looking trollish. That post did look like you were adding to the 'mud = inevitable' vibe. Far from necessarily the case this year.

mr mania swears by his

I always wear an old pair of quite Gothy 'ART' boots - they are great and support the ankle really well. would wear them even when dry tbh - ground is quite stony and uneven.

Yes you know all about it, that's the whole point of why boots are good whatever the conditions! :)

Ok I’m bored so I just did a little research. The nearest weather station to Pilton I could find records for is Yeovilton. The 30 year average for the number of rain days in June 1971-2000 is 8.5. So 8.5/30 days gives a 28.3% chance of more than 1mm of rain on any day in June or to put it in glass half full terms a 71.7% chance of it staying dry. But that’s just one day. To determine the probability of 2 consecutive June days in Somerset being dry you have to square the single day probability = 51.4%. 3 dry days on the bounce we’re down to 36.8%. 4 days & it’s a mere 26.4%. And for the full 5 days of the festival to remain dry throughout is a miserly 18.9% probability i.e an average of less than one year in every 5. Only the last 3 have been wet! :D

But hey, there are probably going to be a good 25,000 less people there this year so even if the mud does materialise it will be less of an inconvenience. I’m actually quite looking forward to it now. Especially as the Jazzworld line up is as good as I’ve seen for many years! :D

<Chants>

Aaare you Willi-ia-am in disguise! ;) :p

On the subject of footwear and the possibility of inclement weather, for the last couple of years I have gone for the tatty old Doc Martens and Sealskinz (waterproof socks) combo. Comfort and dryness and lighter than army boots.

Just my personal choice, like!

Just out of interest, has anyone got any idea how many tickets are left?

I heard a completely unsubstantiated rumour earlier today that it could be as much as 40,000! Imagine all those wide open spaces.

e2a this might not be as far fetched as I first thought. If those who have ordered tickets look at the order tracker on www.seetickets.com you have an "Allocated" ticket number. I only bought my ticket last week and my number is 105***. Assuming they are sequential (and this is admittedly a fairly big assumption after the registration numbers fiasco) they were still 32,000 short of capacity as of last week.

The way I look at it, I hardly live in a hotbed of hedonistic debauchery, but still manage to have a brilliant time practically every weekend. In a round about way I suppose what I'm trying to say is that it's all about good company and the thrill of occasion. Fuck the haters. For some reason I've got a feeling its going to be something special, and is going to leave a lot of people regretting that they didn't come. That said, I really wouldn't hold out for any brilliant surprise acts. With that many tickets left they'd be using any ricks left up their sleeves to secure as many sales as they could.

Nope! Just a little fed up with this "we will have wall to wall sunshine" bollocks. Because in all probability - IT WILL RAIN! :D

I have never at any point claimed wall to wall sunshine is inevitable!

I'd agree we'll be very lucky if we did get that, and yes there 's bound to be a fair chance of some rain, those stats of yours don't lie. But I have seen some (very) early positive-ish indications (for this year specifically) and will post more when things become clearer, later on.

Your figures are general June averages for Yeovilton, but any June can deviate from that, it did last year (with 191% of average June rainfall for the UK overall and Glastonbury getting more than its share).

There's no certainty obviously we will deviate the other way this time (never said otherwise  ), but it's far from impossible, if only on the non meterological principle of 'we're owed a good un'.

Years it scarely rained, at all, and were mostly Glasto scorchers in fact : 1989-1990 and 1992-1995 -- I bet people were saying after 1995 that sun was inevitable (but look what happend in 1997 and 1998, so they were as wrong then as the 'mud = inevitable' merchants are now).

1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003 were all predominantly dry Glastos as well. The dry years still outnumber the wet years -- just. A return MIGHT happen .... I claim no more .....

My main argument has been against those assuming it will be rainy/muddy .... they're far more full of wrongness than is anything I've said myself ....

Possible your ticket was a reallocated return?? Perhaps, as you hint, one that people double ordered because of system fuckups, and returned at an early stage.

I've heard semi reliable reports of a fair number of people cancelling/returning tickets (not because of system errors) this time, ahead of the deadline for returns, which is before long I think? -- no time to check. Reasons for cancellations only to be speculated on -- why would people shallowly unimpressed by the 'shit lineup' order in the first place??

I'm sceptical that as many as 40,000 remain unsold, would like to know more about that one

Please don’t. It’s very dull & you only get yourself in a paddy. :p

I didn’t hint anything. That’s the ticket number I’ve been allocated and I’ve made the assumption that as mine was one of the latest to be sold there are still 32,000 unsold. That assumption may be inaccurate. Who knows!

I'm sceptical that as many as 40,000 remain unsold

So am I. I’ve already said it was an “unsubstantiated rumour”. But the 32k number does seem feasible given there are still normal tickets on sale and best part of 25,000 of those that remain unsold have to be coach package tickets to meet the licence conditions. What is certain is that we will not see a repeat of last year’s overcrowding and that makes me very happy. :)
