Glastonbury 2008

Shame your not going

Just out of interest how old is that photo? You wouldn't be able to see the grass up there nowadays for discarded nitrous bulbs! :(

Looks pre 1995 to me, that pic, but there were plenty of sunny years to choose from in that early 90s period ...

Loads posted here today, but I'm going to leave it for now ...

Yes! I have never seen anything other than cursory checks for glass bottles at the gates before and yet as soon as I got there on the Tuesday last year we were warned by a steward that security on the gate were making thorough searches of people’s bags. And this was of course on a day when only staff were arriving. They appeared to be concentrating on Oxfam Stewards and one poor lad has all his possessions dumped out of his rucksack as we passed. There were numerous similar stories from paying punters of being aggressively searched and told that they should “tell us where your drugs are because we’ll find them anyway!”

I have also never particularly noticed much in the way of obvious security inside the fence and yet last year they appeared to be hunting the arenas and the campsites in packs 5 or 6 strong. The police at Glastonbury are always happy to join in the fun & cast a blind eye to minor misdemeanours but these thugs were just looking out for the slightest opportunity to chuck their weight about. There were numerous tales of aggressive searches & suspected thefts by security guards. In another instance a guy was knocked to the ground & thrown offsite simply for climbing a flagpole. And there were several reports of one particular rogue group who operated in the Park and seemed hellbent on making everybody’s life a misery. Their supervisor was overheard to say “lets have a bit of fun with this lot” as they approached a group of teenagers who were completely minding their own business. And in one instance they were responsible for beating a bloke senseless & trashing his mobile simply because he had the audacity to take their photo.

My personal experiences were relatively minor but while I was on duty I had to rescue one lad from a couple of goons who were showing rather too much interest in him simply because he appeared to have over-indulged & was a little unsteady on his feet. At first I would have been happy to have given them the benefit of the doubt and that they were genuinely concerned for his wellbeing but it was noticeable how quickly they disappeared when I pitched up with my tabard on. I also had a complaint while I was on duty from a couple of women in their 50’s who claimed that a group of security had deliberately kicked a muddy football at them, covered their numbers to prevent them being identified & run off laughing.

In short, I have no doubt that violence & thuggish brutality has gone on outside the fence for years but there was an obvious and worrying move towards more imposing and hostile security onsite last year and I for one felt it was sufficient to impair my enjoyment even though I had the relative impunity of a staff wristband in the event they tried to give me any grief. My reasons for not going this year are numerous but the apparent sea-change in security measures is way up there!

This is all really really shitty :(-- I've not heard this in as much detail from you before now.

We'll probably be chatting it over a bit more over a pint at some point in some field in the summer ;) -- that'll be fun! -- but can I ask, do FIS staff get the opportunity to offer feedback and report their experiences (including really negative stuff like you encountered on duty) back to ..... whoever?

I'd have hoped you'd have either written something in a report, and/or had words with the relevant people about some of the above. Did you get that chance?

I'm not naive about how some elements of security can be total dodgy buffoons and at times actively violent twats, you hear plenty from trustworthy people even if you don't see it yourself. As Superape says, to varying extents this has gone on over many previous Glastonburies. Corrupt and violent security were particularly bad in 1990 in nasty clashes against the Travellers by most accounts (including TC's -- he's not wrong about that specific aspect, although I think he also talks a load of other bollocks about all the Glastonburies he hasn't been to, 1992 to now! ).

Since the early 90s there's definitely been some years where Security have appeared to calm down considerably. I've been lucky (or sensible ;) ) and I've never encountered nasty or violent security at Glastonbury personally, but I don't deny at all that they exist. I'm just wondering (now) to what degree it's rogue elements, or institutionalised/more widespread, probably varies from year to year no?

I ask the open question -- were dodgy security worse last year than in recent (post 2002) years?

Not really, IMO. I did have a bit of a runin with some security who were camped (& had parked their cars) up by Park stage, but it was sorted amicably enough, after a bit of posturing. Maybe they were the ones Tort mentioned, I don't know. Apart from that one incident I didn't personally come across anything else to cause concern.

tbf I think they've been quite good in recent years- the days when security were recruited in gyms and pubs and spent the week fuelled only by amphetamines, booze and adrenaline have gone, hopefully forever. By and large I see them behave professionally (last year at least one was sacked and thrown offsite for being on duty after taking drink), but there's bound to be the odd incident- it's quite a stressful environment to work in.

Interesting that last years Glasto thread was nearly twice as long as this years at the same time. Is it possible its due to the 'festivals forum' ? Or all the reasons people have been stating about the festival and general enthusiasm levels? Reading through the thread updates of trying to buy tickets gives me a nervous flashback! Is it possible SEE have actually sorted their equipment out? Or was the load simpley less on the server becuase less people were buying.

FWIW at the festival I've never had a problem with the security, but I have seen them act in a thuggish way.

IIRC There was a massive thing about last years security wankers on Efestivals, lots of people complaining....

See had their main web page back at 11am, they usually take it down or it got taken down.

So the PROD / Randy & Earl's Old Record Club boys have got their residency confirmed.. So we'll all be there again...

That was aces last year - I was at PROD, with my mates, at Glastonbury and with loads of randoms coming up to me shouting 'alright Rovers! Wembley was brilliant wasn't it!'

Could people stop posting up yet more amazing facts to show it hasn't sold out yet? We're well aware of that cheers. But it will :)

ive got no reason to think its true, but i wouldnt be at all surprised if one or two surprise headliners come out of the woodwork nearer the time.

led zeppelin anyone?

The headliners have been confirmed for ages, how can they announce any more?

And, no thanks :)

Led Zep, U2, Prince, Clodplay, rumours abound. Some wag even suggested that Jay-Cloth bloke might be headlining! :) I'm holding out for a Fish/Marillion reunion.

That list is enought to make me want to go to reading instead.

Orbital reunion :)

Wouldn't that be something? I reckon their MMT8s have probably all given up the ghost by now though!

Gawd, I'm picturing Orbital headlining the Pyramid on the Saturday night now. Shame it wont happen but it would be something special.

Not a fucking again. They already had their farewell gig at Glastonbury, which they they then followed with another 'last ever' gig at T in the Park. And then they even had the bare faced cheek to appear for a last ever knees up in Peckham, alongside Chas and Dave, Roy Orbison and Gordon the Gopher.

Ok, so I lied about the last one, but you get the idea.

i dont see confirmed line-up on the official site.

my mum would be over the mooooon if ledzep turn up. :D :D

It may not be on the website, but the Eavises have conducted any amount of press conferences and interviews about who's headlining. Led Zeppelin aren't playing, thank fuck

I don't mind about the headliners - I just want sunshine!

Seconded, I've only ever seen about 5 bands full sets in the same number of years.... I'm not arsed about who's playing, there's more fun to be had with the small unheard of stuff....
;)

There was no specific facility to do so but I'm sure you could do if you felt strongly enough about something. I believe the core workers go through some form of de-brief. Cheffy would be able to advise more.

I'd have hoped you'd have either written something in a report, and/or had words with the relevant people about some of the above. Did you get that chance?

Given the fact that these incidents were reported on message boards that were moderated by Infoman at the time you can be assured that he was very well aware of them. He was certainly informed of the incident Cheffy experienced at the time.
