Glastonbury 2008

Surely your highlight was 'that was a joke wasn't it babe?' Made you mock me for long enough. :)

So, how did all the various stages sound this year? I saw on telly that they'd ditched the Funktion 1 point source rig from the main stage and gone back to a line array...

My only moan would be the horrendous thumping bass from the Queens head absolutely trashing Newton Faulkners set which I was trying to enjoy and failing:(
Bad planning on the part of the schedule maybe???

Conversely, we tried and failed to get into the Queens Head for Glasvegas on Thursday so we sat outside to listen, only for someone to think it would be a good idea to pump music out from the Other Stage so loud we couldn't hear Glasvegas

I'm not sure the Avalon rig was built to cope with the amount of bass the Wurzels were trying to put through it near the end :D

Funktion1s in the dance stages sounded fantastic.

Alabama 3 at Jazz World sounded really weird, though I never had any other problems there so maybe it was just them or the weather or where I was standing or summat

a move of the queens head might be a good idea...??? Maybe??

Only saw a few acts at the Pyramid but suffered a power outage during Neil Diamond and were the usual struggles with levels, Jay-Z seemed remarkably quiet at times, we were about level with the mixing desk and were able to talk to each other without raising our voices.

Didn't see anything at the other stage but Jazz world sounded very good from what I can recall especially during Candi Staton.

I saw band in the Queens Head and you have to be just in the tent for the Sound not to mix. I spent a geeky moment as the cross over is about a foot wide. One step backwards Pigeon Detectives one step forward some other band. Thought the QH was the worst sound I heard.

I was convinced that they'd managed to lay the trackway through the dance village exactly where the cross over between the east and west tents occurred.

This could of course have been my imagination

I saw Chicane at the QH last year and it sounded good to me. It is a bit close to the Other Stage though.

Oh and... When I was chatting to the village liason guy, I asked how the locals were. Noise complaints up apparently. Verdict was that the Pyramid sound must have been better this year ;)

Reverse view of area above the Park, taken from railway track.

Thing is, they didn't NEED to put any music on the Other Stage on Thursday - it wasn't a soundcheck and it wasn't a DJ, it was just a CD on repeat.

The Pyramid was facing towards our tents in Cockmills and quite a few of the sets could be enjoyed with remarkably good sound quality given the distance. I listened to Goldfrapp and Kings of Leon outside the tent while the kids chilled out and I enjoyed the music:)

Yep... That's how I 'caught' the end of Jay-Z :)

They do it every year (they even play the same track) think it must be to get the levels right or some test (which includes lighting etc IIRC). Pretty stupid if they are putting bands on the Thursday in the same field.

Realised I saw less bands that I hoped (not helped by playing 3 long sets on Sunday) but :

The Slackers - good but not great, seem to have lost their way a bit, but still fun. 6.5/10

King Blues - was never much of a fan but they seem to have turned into a slightly ska-tinged Wonderstuff. Toss 2/10

The Fabulous Penetrators - playing in Shangri La to hardly anyone, they were still (as always) ace. 7.5/10

Candi Staton - stunning. No corny cheesy heritage style nonsense, a really good range of stuff, place went mental when she did You Got The Love 9/10

Young Knives - excellent fun, lots of sarky 'festival' style posing, sharp as fuck. 7/10

Jimmy Cliff - just terrible. Murdered his classic with pure schmaltz 2/10

Alabama 3 (full band, Leftfield) - fantastic. Best festy band there is, politics and wit and great songs. 8/10

John Cale - first time I'd seen him, fierce set, even did Pablo Picasso 8/10

Holy Fuck - wonderful, joyful racket. They seemed to absolutely love it too, and it's just fascinating watching them cock about with film reels and other dodgy analogue gear. 8/10

Rachel Unthank & The Winterset - as wonderful as ever, although I have seen them do a near identical set 3 times now. 7.5/10

Alabama 3 Acoustic - just ace as they always are. Larry was on fine form, the crowd loved it. 8/10

Handsome Family - dark country gothic isn't the most obvious sunny afternoon choice, but they were funny and charming and sounded brilliant. 8/10

Amy Winehouse - clearly she's in trouble and clearly she needs time off, but she still sounded great, put in a good set and was sweet and funny in between being arsey :) 7.5/10

Jay-Z - greatest intro ever, fantastic set, AMAZING atmosphere. For all the front, you could tell he wasn't totally sure he'd pull it off and he did, and seemed grateful for it.. Pure quality, fuck the haters. 8.5/10

Leonard Cohen - words fail me. Beautiful, awe-inspiring, uplifting, phenomenal. He is such a gent, and such a legend and he looked so chuffed. And there wasn't a dry eye in the house when he did Hallelujah. 10/10

King Solomon Burke - only saw a few minutes as I scurried up to Slippery Dicks to do a set, but he sounded absolutely great. 7/10

Head to Head - my mate's band in Slippery Dicks, pure festy funky nonsense. Top entertainment 6.5/10.

Think that's it, which sounds slack, but I still feel like I never stopped running from one stage to another.

Nothing on the Other Stage, nothing in the Acoustic Tent. This is a good thing

Completely fucking awesome.

Weather was great, the rain was nowt to talk of.

Best GM (Glastonbury Moment) was probably the whole of Roni Size's fantastic set, just fucking mad.

Best place, Trash City at night, dark as fuck and just a great atmosphere.

Best overheard conversation - "Is it Jay Z or Jay Cee?"

All I wanted and more.

Best overheard conversation for me was in the other stage field thursday dancing outside a stall 'It's great here, I'm coming back tomorrow.' :D

Worst overheard conversation (and I promise this is verbatim).. queuing for a shower in Dance crew camping on Thursday morning, heard Tobias and Tabitha (and I know this cos a friend came up and said hello) talking about their crazy 'antics', and heard Tabitha say that the one downside is the lack of sushi, because "sushi is just the BEST thing for a champagne hangover" :D

Said to a child who looked about 3 that was kicking up dust outside a tent -

"Odin, stop making a mess"

Child tuns to younger child and whacks him round head.

"And leave Thor alone".

I shit you not.

Was that the wine place? We walked past about 3am on Sunday morning and they were belting out Oasis and there was two lads on the top of the van, one playing Noel strumming a sweeping brush and the other being Liam, to a crowd of about 100.
