Glastonbury 2008

Playing a 4hour set up in Slippery Dicks bar on Sunday night was a fantastic way to end the weekend, even if I did end up pissing INTO the back of a man's jeans AND knocking myself out on a low branch.

Sorry I never made it to that, was busy elsewhere. In fact I believe I informed you of my new views on the only way to listen to dnb by text :D

Still wasn't entirely sure where the bar was anyway tbh

It's quite something reading the reports from those here that went. Realizing just how much knockout stuff I missed!

Me and the GF spent lots of time in the Greenfields, and now I'm kicking myself for all those Babylon years. The cafe opposite Sam's Sauna was lurvvvely. Crafts was cool, as was Greenpeace. Really tasty pizza slices from cafe Tango filled a late night gap on a few occasions. And I had this idea that the greenfield was all 'hippy tat' - how wrong I was. Very jealous of those who get to camp in Undle Ground. It looks soo chilled.

The Park was a big hit with my gang. Lots of 'new music', nice seating areas, shelters, and the view from the hill was knockout. We did the 'secret door' & tunnel crawl at the Rabbit Hole... They were still finishing it off, but it looked fab. All those rugs and cushions, and the 'shoes off' policy was great. A little place of lush comfort away from the mud (that never got a grip thankfully). Anyone else go?

On the more boring logistics front - loads more portaloos next to the Pyramid near the bus. I once waited 3 mins... Otherwise never a queue. Lots more bars selling at least one Real Ale... Finally!

Still massive litter problem at Brothers. The handful of bins couldn't cope. I think they need some of those big dumpsters, although they themselves are ugly.

But what a year. So so good. I'll remember this one for a very very long time.

so, the people threatening to bottle Jay Z and the ones signing the online pledge to turn their backs on him at the Pyramid - are they feeling a bit silly now given that it seemed to go down rather well?

got to see so much more of the site this year because of the job - backstage camping for Theatre and Cabaret was fantastic, proper motley collection of vehicles and tents in the orchard. As usual, wish I'd seen/done so much more but what I did was brilliant.

But what a year. So so good. I'll remember this one for a very very long time.

Bins all over the site were overflowing. I think people were making more of an effort to chuck away their rubbish only to get to the bins and not be able to. There were piles of cans and cups around the bins at the Pyramid stage.

Still loads of shit dumped in the campsites but not as much as last year I don't think.

I think people did make more of an effort. I remember being up at the Park and scanning for litter - almost not a scrap. When the bins could cope, people were doing the right thing in most areas.

And the litter crew were doing a great job. There were people sunbathing at the Pyramid on Monday!

As I mentioned earlier - cows should be back out in a week. That's

If there was anyone there trying to bottle him, they'd have been largely ignored among the 10s of thousands of people who loved every minute of it.

Also - props to those 4-pint cardboard carry handle things, made going to the bar a much less painful experience :)

This didn't happen at the festival but another highlight was my satnav. When we got to farmland it made a mooing sound. The first time it happened magic sam and my bezzer thought it was me. :D

It was very exciting in my delicate state on monday. Simple pleasures eh?

So who else apart from Sparklefish saw the bloke at Shakin' Stevens who'd spent 2 days making a lovely green door, only for Shakey not to actually play it? :D

I was dumbfounded by comments on here from Saturday about him "shouting over other people's records" :D

It was a tight set full of samples and lifts from lots of sources. Go figure - it's fucking hip hop :D

Jay-Z's intro was genius. I can't wait to see and hear it again properly (I was at the back by the tree at the time)

Love that pano El Jefe... I remember being sat up roughly in that spot on Wednesday night, listening to the 'Mexican Roar' go round the site. Fab.

really glad you had a good time! What did you do work wise?

Chatted to all her mates whenever they came past :hmm:

Read on the BBC site that Leonard Cohen didn't want to be recorded or filmed on his British tour, which is his right I suppose but such a shame, it was one of the real highlights of my year.

It seems like he was a bit of a Marmite act, coz I've heard so many conflicting reports about his set, from people who left after 15 mins, to comments like yours :)

I agree...
The opening, I agree was brilliant, his first 2 numbers were great. After that he lost me, I was really not impresed, yes I was bored... right to the end, the last 2/3 songs were better.

You either loved it or hated it. I dont doubt the people down the front were loving it but at the beck ambivalence abounded and many many people walked out past us saying it was shite

On the Sunday morning we'd taken some stuff to the car and were queing in a massive line to get back in when a guy walked past in the opposite direction, taking loudly into his mobile and said "for two songs it were great the rest was shite" and a massive cheer went up from everyone in the queue, at least 100 people so I guess my experience of it was shared by many!

My Highlights

Friday
Hobo Jones and the junkyard dogs- They were so genuinely overwhelmed about playing at the festival, great mix of good old tunes and fun.
Candi Staton- Exceeded expectations, top performance.
John Cale- first time I have seen him, pretty impressed.
Seasick Steve- Must admit I had reservations about this (from what I have seen on TV) but Steve more than lived up to the hype. A great performance with a variety of instruments, nothing original in what he does but he does it very well and seems a nice bloke.

Saturday
Shakey was shit but the bloke who spent 2 days making a green door (a song he didn't play) more than made up for it.
XX Teens- These guys are really growing on me but unfortunately played to a rather bewildered audience in the east dance tent.
Holy Fuck- Saw the end of their performance which was great but again wondered about the venue/ timing. (would have been great in the glade in the small hours)
Rachel unthank and the winterset- saw the end half of their performance due to the trek across site, first time I have listened to them properly and they make some hauntingly beautiful (if not a bit miserable) music.
Alabama 3 (acoustic set)- Much better than the 2 times I saw them on the friday (although the second time was very brief), great choice of tunes and very funny dialog from Larry Love.
Buddy Guy- Astounds and frustrates in equal measures, is a great blues performer but sometimes seems more interested in crowd pleasing circus tricks and largely ignored his own extensive back catalogue of great tracks in favour of Clapton/ Hendrix rock covers. He rocked tho', I just kind of wished he hadn't.
Jay-Z- Pisstake intro was the highlight, was a tad disappointed with the rest although he definitely won the day. Just thought it was a bit quiet and slightly lame although it ain't really my thing in fairness.

Sunday
Had a great time at Randy and Earl's Old Record Club, played loads of my favourite tracks. The Dance Village was a bit like a morgue at that hour which was a shame but from a selfish POV I enjoyed every minute.
Rafven- Swedish gypsy folk type of act who were well worth the trek from one side of the site to the other.
Neil Diamond- Not entirely my thing but filled the sunday afternoon slot nicely.
Goldfrapp- As above, some background music whilst waiting for Leonard Cohen.
Leonard Cohen- A truly great performance, not hugely familiar with his stuff but more than lived up to his reputation, great stage presence/ voice / band/ tunes.
Billy Bragg- usual end of festy ranting/ hit playing singalong but a good traditional high spirited end to probably the best Glastonbury I have been to.
