My Highlights
Friday
Hobo Jones and the junkyard dogs- They were so genuinely overwhelmed about playing at the festival, great mix of good old tunes and fun.
Candi Staton- Exceeded expectations, top performance.
John Cale- first time I have seen him, pretty impressed.
Seasick Steve- Must admit I had reservations about this (from what I have seen on TV) but Steve more than lived up to the hype. A great performance with a variety of instruments, nothing original in what he does but he does it very well and seems a nice bloke.
Saturday
Shakey was shit but the bloke who spent 2 days making a green door (a song he didn't play) more than made up for it.
XX Teens- These guys are really growing on me but unfortunately played to a rather bewildered audience in the east dance tent.
Holy Fuck- Saw the end of their performance which was great but again wondered about the venue/ timing. (would have been great in the glade in the small hours)
Rachel unthank and the winterset- saw the end half of their performance due to the trek across site, first time I have listened to them properly and they make some hauntingly beautiful (if not a bit miserable) music.
Alabama 3 (acoustic set)- Much better than the 2 times I saw them on the friday (although the second time was very brief), great choice of tunes and very funny dialog from Larry Love.
Buddy Guy- Astounds and frustrates in equal measures, is a great blues performer but sometimes seems more interested in crowd pleasing circus tricks and largely ignored his own extensive back catalogue of great tracks in favour of Clapton/ Hendrix rock covers. He rocked tho', I just kind of wished he hadn't.
Jay-Z- Pisstake intro was the highlight, was a tad disappointed with the rest although he definitely won the day. Just thought it was a bit quiet and slightly lame although it ain't really my thing in fairness.
Sunday
Had a great time at Randy and Earl's Old Record Club, played loads of my favourite tracks. The Dance Village was a bit like a morgue at that hour which was a shame but from a selfish POV I enjoyed every minute.
Rafven- Swedish gypsy folk type of act who were well worth the trek from one side of the site to the other.
Neil Diamond- Not entirely my thing but filled the sunday afternoon slot nicely.
Goldfrapp- As above, some background music whilst waiting for Leonard Cohen.
Leonard Cohen- A truly great performance, not hugely familiar with his stuff but more than lived up to his reputation, great stage presence/ voice / band/ tunes.
Billy Bragg- usual end of festy ranting/ hit playing singalong but a good traditional high spirited end to probably the best Glastonbury I have been to.
