Not necessarily at all. This could mark a high-point for the FN. We can't know.

The other unknown is the makeup of parliament after June, meaning that Macron will face a massive amount of politicking to do anything.

Yes, but she'll now be trounced and they seriously though she'd get 30% in R1.
She's been sliding in the polls and might just have slid into third. Top two go through - she doesn't win promotion to the second round as champion, but that doesn't really matter too much.

Yeah, and these are actually only provisional sample numbers.

They're not exit polls, they're based on samples of votes which have been counted.
Ah ok. Well they have a history of being spot on!

But to cling to hope, they could have got their sampling methodology wrong given the totally different dynamic of this election. Saying that Melenchon is a fair way behind really.

My SIL was convinced Mélenchon would get through to the second round, but then she lives in SW France, where his support is strongest. I think she will vote for Macron because she's in the anyone-but-Le Pen camp.

Sooner or later French politics is going to find that the anyone-but-Le Pen camp no longer holds the same amount of visitors that it once did.

Maybe. Or maybe this year was a perfect storm for Le Pen. A ruling socialist party that has completely collapsed. A r/w opposition party that chose an appalling candidate who really should have stood down.

She may not find the same room at the top next time.

This election has been very similar to the recent Dutch one. Fascists on the rise but not rising quite as far as they had hoped and others had feared.
