Far-right response to Southport Outrage And Ongoing Violent Disorder

Not enough people will bother to use VPNs to make it a viable platform if it were banned. Can't imagine it will be but tbh it's a propaganda platform for the right. It isn't open, it isn't representative and it isn't a public service. Can imagine worse things than it being cut down in some way.
Agree.
I'm not sure asking the government to be more authoritarian about what sites and social media are accessible is the answer. :hmm:
Cunts ruining it for the rest of us unfortunately. At what price free access?

SM is a MAJOR problem in all this, and need to be dealt with, if one platform is owned by a complete loon, that's not prepared to deal with the problem, but instead adds fuel to it, what is the answer?

SM are private companies, fine them, block them, even for a few days and the advertisers will force their hands. SM has this weird free reign and its causing serious political unrest atm, especially Twitter.

And TR is sunning himself up . Instigated violence i know his not alone in this but something doesnt sit right with me. Wouldn't suprise me if he never returns here.

Social media didn't exist during the '30s and the '70s and wasn't behind the rise of the far right in those eras.

Less and less people use it? Which I think is the case. It clearly does have uses but it’s not the be all and end all of democratic discourse. I think future generations will be less inclined to use it.

But you want to call on the Government to restrict access to media.

Do you mistakenly think the Government is on our side or something?

What about all the environmental and left wing stuff that gets organised on social media?

I can't believe that some of you think some sort of crackdown and banning of the use of social media would be in any way helpful! It's insane?

Cat pics and random ass musings of randoms are not the media any more than the old opinion columns in the local papers are "the media".

They're communication tools, private companies that can regulayed and ultimately be replaced if they're going to act with complete disregard for peoples safety.

Banning no. People voting with their feet, perhaps. I think there’s a lot of burnout from these platforms. Could be wrong.

Right ok - hate speech and incitement are already crimes - so the Government and police have the power already to go after people who use SM to organise such things.

I notice no-one was calling for twitter to be banned over Musk's blatantly anti-trans lunacy.

Do you really want to put this in the hands of our Government?

If an American business was selling chocolate laced with lead, it would be removed from the UK until they removed the lead.

How is Twitter and Facebook any different? They're stupid ass apps that are inciting political instability in our country and someone(s) are gonna get killed before long.

Exactly!

Although, facebook seems to be trying to deal with, Musk is just making it worst, the cunt.

Not sure the apps are on our side either.

Are you serious? Musk is adding fuel to the fire, the fire that these loons are trying to get going, to burn people alive!

If a journalist on a newspaper breaks the law, breaks reporting restrictions, prints a libel, the newspaper is what gets sued. So it has gate-keepers, so make sure that doesn't happen. Because it's very expensive and damaging.

I can't see why that model isn't transferred to social platforms. They are publishers, after all, and if they replicate a law-breaking call to violence, for example, then they should be tried in court and fined out of existence.

I'm ambivalent about it for the most part but it has nothing to do with imagining the government is on our side. Musk has already clamped down on Left wing speech and massively amplified the Right. The government would immediately take action if the situation were reversed and Twitter was loaded with revolutionary Leftists seizing the means of production.

They don't allow for Left or Right access to social media out of some sense of fair play, they do what they feel is expedient when they feel it's expedient.

And on a side note - it's a massive issue that so much organising is at least imagined to take place on major, corporate SM platforms. It isn't safe, it isn't reliable and it isn't secure.
