Leclerc on top in second free practice

Charles Leclerc went fastest for the second session in a row. Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz were in second and third positions. Verstappen and Sainz could not get their flying laps in on the soft compound tyres. The second free practice session of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix took place at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The session was delayed by fifteen minutes with concerns about an explosion at an oil refinery in the city of Jeddah. The session started at 20:15 hours local time under the lights. The sixty-minute long second free practice session started at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit with air temperatures at 22 degrees C and track temperatures at 23 degrees C. The Pirelli tyre choice at this race is the white-striped hard compound tyres (C2), yellow-striped medium compound tyres (C3), and red-striped soft compound tyres (C4) from the middle range of compounds in the Pirelli tyre range.

Leclerc set the early pace with a lap time of 1m30.216s as he led team-mate Sainz in the early running. The Oracle Red Bull Racing drivers came out on the track last and Verstappen went third fastest, 1.1 seconds slower than Leclerc. Verstappen then went fastest with a lap time of 1m30.214s, just 0.002 seconds faster than Leclerc. But Leclerc on the soft compound tyres went to the top of the time charts with a lap of 1m30.074s. Lewis Hamilton with a much better lap went fifth fastest behind Sergio Pérez. Hamilton was 0.439 seconds slower than the fastest lap. George Russell was in sixth position.

Kevin Magnussen stopped out on the side of the track and brought out the Virtual Safety Car. The Dane missed most of the first session with a hydraulics problem. As the teams started the race simulations, Sainz brushed the wall. Leclerc then clouted the wall and his session was over. Both Scuderia Ferrari drivers’ session ended with the team not being able to collect enough data on the long runs. Leclerc ended the session 0.140 seconds faster than Verstappen. Sainz was in third position ahead of Pérez. In a more encouraging session for the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team, Hamilton and Russell were in fifth and sixth positions.

Lando Norris in a much better session for the McLaren F1 team was in seventh position even as team-mate Daniel Ricciardo was in fifteenth position. Esteban Ocon, Valtteri Bottas and Yuki Tsunoda rounded off the top tem positions in the session. Another close battle is brewing between the Red Bull Racing and the Ferrari teams this race weekend. Mercedes are closer to the top two teams this weekend, but still 0.5 seconds slower a lap.

All the Mercedes-powered cars are at the bottom of the P3 times.

That's remarkably bad.

Hammy was fastest, and he was a full second down on Ferrari.

The Williams, McLarens and Aston Martins were several seconds adrift.

Saudi Arabia FP3

Formula 1 was back to running for the final practice session of the 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, after a tense Friday in Jeddah, with Charles Leclerc fastest ahead of the Red Bull duo.Charles Leclerc made it three out of three, going fastest in FP3 for the 2022 Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, after being fastest as well in the first two practice sessions, but Max Verstappen was not far off in second, which sets the scene for a thrilling showdown between the two drivers in qualifying. Friday was tense around the Jeddah Corniche circuit, due to the unfortunate events that took place next to the track, with missiles being launched on an Aramco facility nearby causing a huge fire to erupt. Discussions went on between the teams, both drivers and team principles, the FIA, Formula 1 management, the local authorities to decide how the event will move forward, as the 20 drivers in particular expressed safety concerns, with their meeting going on till the late hours of Friday night before a decision was made to push on with the race weekend.

The first day of practice was dominated by Ferrari with Red Bull not far off, as Charles Leclerc topped the first two practice sessions while Max Verstappen was second fastest on both occasions, as Mercedes continued to struggle with their car. Ferrari will be looking to make up some of track time lost on Friday due to their drivers’ incidents that didn’t allow them to make any long runs. With 24 minutes remaining from FP3, Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri broke down as he was heading out to the track but still within the pit exit, the Frenchman assisted by the track marshals rolled the AT03 back to the pitlane, the incident not causing any stoppage.

The finishing order after FP3
Leclerc’s best at the end of FP3 was 1:29.735 after a last minute effort from the Monegasque, but his rival Max Verstappen was only 0.033s behind in the Red Bull. Sergio Perez was an extra 0.065s behind his teammate in third, as Carlos Sainz took fourth place 0.274s off the pace of his teammate in the other #16 F1-75. Valtteri Bottas was superb again putting his Alfa Romeo in fifth place with a 1:30.030, and was followed by Esteban Ocon in sixth, the Frenchman a tenth adrift from the Finn. Pierre Gasly took seventh in the AlphaTauri despite his break down in the pitlane mid session, and was followed by Kevin Magnussen, eighth in the Haas, the Dane recovering from his Friday troubles and 0.527s off the pace on a track he has never been to before. Fernando Alonso put the second Alpine in ninth, as Yuki Tsunoda followed him in tenth, the Japanese 0.119s further behind the Spaniard.

Mercedes and McLaren on worrying form
The best of the Mercedes pair was Lewis Hamilton in 11th almost one second off the pace and still suffering from “porpoising” on his W13, as his teammate George Russell was down in 14th 1.248s off the pace. Is this is their real pace, the are going to endure a painful qualifying around the Jeddah Corniche Circuit. After showing some promise on Friday, McLaren went back down the order in FP3, with Daniel Ricciardo their highest finisher in 16th place 1.451s off the pace as Lando Norris was painfully down in 19th, the Briton 1.794s too slow.

F1 marshal quits Saudi role after Hamilton crash tweet

A marshal working at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekend will not play a role in the remainder of the event after a controversial tweet surfaced on Saturday. The marshal aimed a message at seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, stating he hoped the Briton would have a similar accident to Romain Grosjean at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix. In the crash, Grosjean’s car veered heavily into the barriers on the opening lap of the race after contact with former F1 driver Daniil Kvyat and erupted into flames. Grosjean was able to escape from the incident, with burns to his hands being the only injuries.

The marshal’s tweet, posted in Arabic, stated: “I hope he has an accident like Romain in Bahrain.” Another tweet followed it later in the day, which said: “I would like to apologise to SAMF (Saudi Arabian Motorsport Federation) and Lewis and announce my resignation from my duties on track.” F1’s weekend in Saudi Arabia has already had its controversies, with a lengthy meeting held between drivers on Friday night to discuss the remainder of the race weekend. The gathering came after a missile struck an oil depot 10 kilometres from the circuit on Friday, however F1 opted to proceed with the race event. It has asserted that it has had “all assurances” from Saudi Arabia that the paddock is a safe environment this weekend.
