F1 2018

I noticed that the winners champagne bottle now has a camera on it, I bet that gets some interesting shots with the spray

Come on Ted the suns coming up here and I want to go to bed and I've still got to take the dog out, I'm knackered

OK that's me, see you all in two weeks for the USGP at a much more civilized time where I hope Lewis clinches the Drivers Championship

Hoo dear Vettel what were you playing at? He's been outclassed by Hamilton again.

I would have liked to hear Kimi's response if Ferrari did ask them to swap at the end of the race. What is "get fucked, lol" in Finnish?

The Italian press savage Ferrari and Vettel
They have really got the knives out for both it seems, given that Ferrari only a couple of months looked the favourite with the best car in the field, the fiercely proud and partisan Italian press is not amused, here are some of the post Suzuka comments.

La Gazzetta dello Sport; "Ferrari is in ruins, there are strategists who make mistakes, a weak driver who learns nothing from mistakes, a team boss who attacks his team, and a car in decline. Before Monza, you could hardly have imagined such a collapse."

La Stampa; "Maybe it's bad luck, but it's also a fact that Sebastian Vettel no longer does anything right."

Coriere dello Sport; "The problem can only be the team and its drivers, Vettel is in a deep existential crisis."

Corriere della Sera; "While Ferrari erred in qualifying on Saturday, it was Vettel who threw away the Japanese grand prix with his clash against Max Verstappen. The German adds to his collection of horror mistakes by destroying a fantastic start, these mistakes are an expression of a deep unrest within the four time champion, who is experiencing a crisis of confidence."

La Repubblica; "While Hamilton reaches for Fangio's record, Ferrari's season fails, Vettel chose the worst moment to lose and Ferrari breaks up under team boss Maurizio Arrivabene, who criticises his own people."

On the subject of Ferrari's lost form and mistakes, I was looking back at the news to see if I could identify what happened and when, while I am fully aware of my anti-Ferrari prejudice and have little if any sympathy for their plight, there loss of form could well be down to the death of their chairman Sergio Marchionne. After all he was credited with turning around Ferrari’s road car business and the resurgence in the F1 teams title fight against Mercedes in the press shortly before his death. His illness and death came quickly and were not expected, as far as anyone was concerned he has a shoulder problem and it was complications to that shoulder surgery that apparently lead to his death.

After the British GP the points were Vettel 171 points, Hamilton 163 points, that race took place on the 8th July, after that came the German race where Vettel span in the rain while leading the race. That was just a week after Marchionne's surgery and the news that there were serious complications, he died a few days later before the Hungarian GP.

So with all the talk of sensors on the car and speculation about fights in the team etc, could their loss of form just be down to the death of their boss? I guess it could be that simple.

Alonso to IndyCar in 2019?
While Alonso has yet to announce what his plans are for 2019 it seems likely that he will race in IndyCar, why do you say that 1%er I hear you ask. Well it seems that he has spent rather a lot of money buying the TV rights for the Spanish market for the IndyCar series. As with many countries where pay TV has caused a massive drop in viewing figures for F1, Spain is on that list. It appears that Alonso has brought the rights and is hoping to sell his racing to a free to air channel at a profit. He has massive appeal in Spain so I think if he races in IndyCar he will get plenty of viewers.

Beyond Victory podcast #3
This is a great podcast, its long but worth a listen. Nico Rosberg talks to Flavio Briatore and now I understand why Alonso has brought the rights to Indycar for Spanish TV :)

3 Brits in F1 next season
Joining World Champion Lewis Hamilton will be Lando Norris in a McLaren and now George Russell in a Williams. Russell who looks likely to win this years F2 Championship has been Mercedes reserve driver this season, incidentally he will be the first British driver for Williams since Jenson back in 2000. For sure Toto will have played a big part in getting Russell the Williams drive, so maybe we are looking at the next Mercedes driver if he shows some spunk.

It is still unclear who will be his team mate, but Sergey Sirotkin's sponsorship money will surely put him in poll position to remain at the team, but he hasn't been confirmed as yet. So we have just two seats left for next season if my memory is still working, one at Williams and one at Toro Rosso to partner Kvyat. Williams are a little spoilt for choice as available to them are Sirotkin, Ocon or Kubica, I'm sure it will be one of those who drives for the team next season.

But what about Toro Rosso? Could it be F2 driver Alex Albon (he is Anglo-Thai, so could be claimed as a British driver) he is currently 2nd in the F2 championship just ahead of Lando Norris. According to Lando Norris's father Lando has a picture of Alex Albon on his wall and sees him as an inspiration. I believe the 2nd biggest shareholder in the Red Bull drinks company is a Thai Businessman called Chaleo Yoovidhya but I'm not sure how interested he is in F1 or backing a British/Thai driver.

We will know for sure in a couple of weeks I guess.

Kimi hit a parked car
According to reports Kimi hit a parked car in his home town of Baar in Switzerland, not much is known about the incident as the Swiss police will not comment other than to say he was fined CHF350 (about $350 I think) and also an administration fee around the same amount

The German race will be at the Hockenheimring as the Nurburgring can't sort out their finances, it appears that Mercedes have chucked some money at Hockenheim to ensure there is a German GP

Following a World Motor Sport Council meeting yesterday the FIA have approved a number of technical rule changes, including the alignment of overtaking protocols once safety cars return to the pits and the introduction of additional rain lights on rear wing endplates. Minor modifications have also been made to rules regarding the fairing on the Halo to help with driver extraction. Also teams will be responsible for initial scrutineering of their cars, this should stop teams knowingly flouting the rules and hoping it isn't picked up by the stewards, making them responsible so teams can't claim they didn't know their car was illegal.

After a cock up led to this year’s Formula One Canadian Grand Prix ending a full two laps early, F1 have announced that it won’t rely on humans to end races anymore. A computer will get the responsibility instead, and digital checkered flags will be the new norm. The light panel at the start-finish line will become the new checkered flag, showing checkered lights to signal the end of the race. I'm sure they will also have someone wave the flag to keep up the tradition.

Ponders if Williams is going down the Merc B team route :hmm:
They need to do something and becoming Mercedes B team isn't a bad choice. With Sir Frank not very well and unable to really control things anymore and the loss of Patrick Head and Pat Symonds the team has lost direction. Next season the Williams car will be more a Mercedes as they will not only use the Mercedes power-unit but also the gearbox, rear suspension and rear axle set up. Traditionally Williams have always engineered their own gearbox, purely so they can have 100% influence on the rear design of their car.

It will also be interesting to see how much of the Mercedes aero appears on the car with Paddy Low now fully in charge of the 2019 car, he will be fully aware of the direction Mercedes were taking and we may see some transfer to the new Williams. Also with Lawrence Stroll's money and Martini sponsorship deal ending, the team are going to find themselves very short of finances. It is the perfect storm arriving at Williams, loss of money from backers, sponsors and being at the back of the grid, so loss of FOM money, they could find it a real struggle to continue in F1.

Toto Wolff still has strong ties with Williams, he was a share holder until recently and his wife worked for the team for many years, so I'm sure he will do whatever it takes to keep Williams on the grid. I can see Mercedes having a similar relationship with Williams as Ferrari currently has with Haas. With the power of the manufactures in F1 nowadays unfortunately the days of independent teams competing at the top is no more, I fear. If Williams decide they do not want to go down the B team route and remain an independent constructor, Mercedes have Racing Point Force India to look too and I'm sure that Lawrence Stroll would jump at the chance of more Mercedes involvement in his team, it can only be a good thing for them.

RIP Guy Edwards
Not a name that springs to mind when one thinks of F1 drivers, but he had a couple of goes in the 70's with Graham Hills team and replaced James Hunt at Lord Hesketh team when he brought loads of sponsorship money with him. He was one of the drivers who pulled Niki Lauda out of his burning car at the Nurburgring in 1976, for which he was awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal. I don't think he ever made any money from F1 as a driver but amassed a fortune earning huge sums via commissions for getting sponsors into F1, he literally wrote the book on it (see what I did there ;) ) He redefined the way F1 teams were funded. He had been ill for some time and passed away at the age of 75.

Weather and the F1 USGP
Things are looking interesting weather wise for the GP in Austin this weekend, there have been record breaking low-temperatures this week with some cold weather coming down from Canada. Stories in the local press are claiming the current cold front passing through Texas and Austin took Sunday’s 32C heat and plunged the temperatures to only just over 5C on Monday to match a 104 year-old record for the coldest October 15th ever in Austin. Thunderstorms have brought almost 2 inches of rain to parts of the Austin metro area with at least 12 power outages.

F1 fans will no doubt have flashbacks to a similar event in Austin during the 2015 Grand Prix where torrential downpours caused chaos. Should the worst happen and the floods occur in Austin again, then it’s very likely to be the last Grand Prix we’ll see Vettel in with a theoretical chance of stopping Hamilton from taking his 5th drivers crown.

Robert Kubica gets $10 million boost for Williams seat
Polish news reports are claiming that Polish oil company PKN Orlen is ready to write a $10 million check for deposit into the current Williams reserve driver's sponsorship fund for 2019. That would give him a fighting chance of competing with the millions offered by the likes of Sergey Sirotkin and a boost to becoming Mercedes-backed rookie George Russell's 2019 teammate. Apparently Robert Kubica had meeting the president of the PKN Orlen management board, Daniel Obajtek. Following the meeting Kubica said "I am calm. I can only thank my fans for supporting me. Let's hope we'll see each other next year, but it's not like I will stop smiling. I don't know what will happen, but I can say I'm working on it".

Renault to build complete;y new engine for 2019
After a stuttering start to life with the Spec-C version of the R.E.18 engine, Renault Sport have announced that they are to build a completely new engine for the 2019 Formula 1 season. With Honda making gains throughout the season in preparation for the start of their partnership with Aston Martin Red Bull Racing, Renault face falling behind the Japanese manufacturer and even further behind benchmarks Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz. Previously, Renault were planning to base their 2019 engine on the Spec-C unit, but Renault Sport Formula 1 Team boss Cyril Abiteboul believes that the current structure of the engine is limiting upgrades and says that an overhaul is needed.

“It is a new engine for 2019. One of the reasons for it, and why the Spec-C is not delivering more in terms of performance, is because we are held back by the structural limitations of the current engine. Given the ambition in terms of power improvement for next year, pretty much all of the engine will be new”.

I'm sure he is only talking about the ICE and the hybrid parts of the power unit will remain the same, even so building a brand new ICE will cost millions and I'm sure will take a couple of seasons to get up to the speed of the other manufactures, I wonder if Danny Ric knew this when he signed for the team :hmm:

Pre-season testing for 2019
Pre-season testing will once again occur at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in 2019, with running taking place over two weeks, with four days of running each week. The first day of running will commence on Monday, February 18th, with the final day of the first test happening on Thursday, February 21st. The second test kicks off on February 26th before the whole test concludes on March 1st, two weeks before the opening race of the season in Australia. Testing has been pushed forward by a week compared to recent years to accommodate the Australian Grand Prix, which starts the season off one week earlier than usual.

Lets hope it doesn't snow like last year, I can't understand why they don't test in Bahrain where the weather and for sure the temperatures would be much better suited to the cars, I understand it may cost a little more to get the cars and staff to Bahrain but in F1 terms it would be penny's, what cost snow and no testing!

News highlights
Ferrari

According to Italian media reports Maurizio Arrivabene is going to have his contract extended at Ferrari. I have to say I an a little surprised, he has made a number of mistakes that I believe would have lost most team bosses their jobs. It also seems that Mattia Binotto who has publicly fallen-out with Arrivabene will remain as technical director. Next year will be a big year for Ferrari as they could lose both Arrivabene and Vettel if they don't win their respective championships.

Williams seat

It seems that the Williams seat will go to the driver with the most money. Ocon is still in the frame, as are Sirotkin and Kubica. It could all come down to a bidding war, in which case Mercedes could be the deciding factor with the cost of the ICE and gearbox.

McLaren get coca cola deal
McLaren has announced a deal with the Coca Cola company that will see the iconic brand appear on the team's MCL33 for the last three remaining races of the 2018 season. Coca-Cola and its sub-brands will be represented on the two McLaren race cars as well as the team’s race drivers, Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne, and McLaren test driver Lando Norris.
