EU Referendum: EXIT POLL

Remain in the EU?

Sorry I don't get it?

Feeling stupid - Louis MacNeice
There are a number of ways to interpret that, but my bet is that the author of this graffito adheres to the theory that voting in pencil allows Them to erase your mark and change it. This is something They apparently take the trouble to do when They want to rig votes.

You'll no doubt have seen the security vans parked up on polling night, with the staff furiously rubbing away...

Certainly makes the case for low tech paper & wooden polling booth. Just imagine if we could vote online from smartphones? I'm sure GCHQ would draft in extra staff at election time.

Gets coat, puts permanent marker in pocket & goes to polling station... :D

Isn't that whole "use a pen, they will rub out your vote" thing a joke started by Al Murray?

Mighty be wrong, but I think they use wax pencils anyway, which can't easily be erased.

Just remember that it's not about identity: the question is not "how European do you feel?", like this person thinks:

I don't know what feeling european (or british for that matter) means anyway. Noone has defined the qualities involved and so I have no point of reference nor any means to make a comparison.

Remain seems to endorse the current government, help TTIP along, support a capitalist institution, but also not make things worse.

Exit seems to endorse the far right that has taken over this debate, facilitate an even more austere tory regime, support capitalists here, and not make things remain the same.

That's about as far as I can get. Which is the correct choice please?

Well, you live on an archipelago called the British Isles, which is part of European geography. Quite what that means as to states and parliaments and supranational bodies is anyone's guess.

If this was an opinion poll about whether you like immigrants it'd be quite easy, but it isn't. What it asks on the paper is whether you think the UK should stay in the EU or not.

Whether the result will be read as answering just that question or any number of others is a different matter.

A couple of local Lexit campaigners have posted up 'it's already been decided' conspiracy stuff this morning. Which begs the question why did they bother campaigning?

Oh by the way....

While the polls are open, it is a criminal offence for anyone, not just broadcasters, to publish anything about the way in which people have voted in the referendum, where that is based on information given by voters after they have voted.
Yes, but we are allowed to discuss the appearance of politicians at polling stations (that they are there, not what they look like, from what I understand) or the weather.

I feel I should know what to do, and I don't. That makes me feel inadequate and ignorant. I don't like that. Fuck you capitalist cameron
I know I should vote leave, but struggle to stomach doing so. Right now it's 50/50 if I even go to the polling station. And if I do its 50/50 between actually voting and just writing abuse on the ballet paper.

Yep, me too though I wouldn't bother going to the polling station to spoil my vote.

Wot I wrote on Facebook...

Whichever way you vote today I hope you do it with at least some disgust in your heart. This entire referendum has been the most propaganda driven, corrupt, opportunist, dishonest, fear mongering, undemocratic and manipulative process the already dubious political landscape of this country has seen in my lifetime. Even the Scottish IndyRef, which was defined by threats and veiled abuse had at least some voices to balance the arguments. This has had none.

I'm voting Leave, for what I believe are good, moral and practical reasons, some of which I've mentioned. I know plenty of people who're voting Remain though for reasons which they find equally good, moral and practical. I even agree with some of their motivations even if in the end I'm not going to follow their lead. On a national level though there's been no legitimate discussion, no acknowledgement of the real debates to be had on either side. Politicians, media and academia have all taken part in a race to the bottom to insult, patronise and lie about their opposites. A vote for Leave has been press-ganged into being a vote for Farage, Johnson and the far right, somehow inherently racist and bigoted regardless of reasons. A vote for Remain has become the talking point of Cameron and Osborne, threats from Capital and patronising manipulation about faster lines at passport control or glib and hollow declarations of fixed-grin niceness. Like a shit advert for a shit chain store. The height of discourse on both sides ending up as a game of Top Trumps over which side has the bigger bastards involved, rather than which vote will be best for us.

On both sides it's the right who've led the debate, who've been gifted control of it and allowed to use blackmail, blame, bigotry and panic as their tools. On both sides legitimate discussion has been so negligible that people have seemed genuinely surprised to find simple, objective debates being had. The usual expectation being declarations from Bono, Beckham, Keith Chegwin and Bob fucking Geldof - political heavyweights of our time - that are supposed to sway us great unwashed into voting as those in power see fit.

So when you vote I hope it's with disgust at the way we've all been treated while making a decision that'll effect this country for the next century. And more than that I hope that you cast your own vote, the one you know to be right, rather than the one that's been distilled through the many, many layers of their bullshit.

I wouldn't normally, but I think if I head down to vote leave there's a chance I'll just end up writing 'their all fucking cunts' instead.
