England Cricket 2022

Day 4 ticket holders need this done in 15 overs to get a full refund.

15-30 overs they get half back.

Lots of empty seats.

Guess the post mortem should wait a bit, but Crawley, Lees, Pope and Bairstow are all a bit lucky that their failings may not be looked at so closely due to the result.

Not everyone can be as good as Joe Root, but someone else who is as good as Paul Collingwood would be nice.

What’s your XI for Trent Bridge?

Broad and Anderson’s records there are amazing. You cannae drop Potts, surely? What to do about about No. 8?

I'm glad foakes is happy to play "boring". Everyone else wants to be a flair player, but doesn't have the talent. Like having 6 KPs on a bad day. We need a few grinders.

Yep, he kept his shit together and played sensibly. What a tonic.

Strange old game. England were absolute toss for two of the three and a half days but still won. Great innings by Root and hopefully if he manages to keep it together as a batsman for 2-3 more years then the younger ones who are still very inexperienced at this level will have time to develop into proper test batsmen.

Good grit to see out the game from a very testy position yesterday after Bairstow got out, brainlessly. That will hopefully do the group a lot of good.

They're not inexperienced at this level any more, though. Pope has played in 24 tests now. Crawley 22. That represents two full years of test cricket for England. It would represent three full years of test cricket if they were New Zealanders. And they're both 24, so you can't call them young for much longer. Meanwhile, Alex Lees is 29.

Don't want to be all doom and gloom after a good win, but this chase only exemplified what has been the case mostly since Cook retired. Runs have to come from Root and Stokes. Otherwise, there is very, very little there.

Yes definitely. The bowlers aren't going to restrict the opposition to one significant partnership every time either are they. Great win in the end - low scoring tests are often the best - but the old problems are very much there. That first innings score will lose you the game nine times out of ten.

Interesting observation made by Root on the turning point in the game I thought.

"When they changed the ball for the second time. It didn't swing. The previous ball had been swinging."

Williamson also made remarks about learning about the ball, in terms of when it is hard and when it goes soft. I hope the ball type doesn't come to dominate things but then again you could probably use a tennis ball and get half of England's top order out.

Reading through comments on the Guardian and forums there is an unbelievable amount of leeway being given to Pope. The excuse is now he's become England's sacrifice at number 3. Definitely not his fault he's played 24 tests and scored barely 1000 runs. A figure (1000 runs) most decent but worth their place players reached in about 12 tests in the past.

Making him half as good as seemingly everyone thinks he is.

It's bonkers this number 3 thing. It's a very English thing for the number 3 position to be considered a problem position rather than an excellent position at which to bat, something to aspire to. Kane Williamson has done ok at first drop. As did Ponting, Lara, Richards, Bradman, etc, etc. Good players do well wherever they bat. Even Root, who's supposedly allergic to number 3, averages 40 there.

I don't have a problem with Root batting at 4. He's earned the right to choose his position. But everybody else should want to bat at 3 now that 4 is taken.

I was a big hitter, but more than slightly suspect on timing, I used to bat at five, when the steam was out of the bowlers.
