England Cricket 2021

Picking up a bit. Go on Jimmy!!

It's got very dark here in Derby so not sure which direction that might end up.

The world's most exciting test batsman is also an ace in the field.. theres got to better cricketers out there?

“Does Sibley put down more than his fair share of chances?” asks Adam Roberts. Yes, according to the Sky scorer Benedict Bermange – seven out of 18 in his Test career. “We need to find a way to get Jimmy annoyed. His two wickets in two balls came after a run was given off his bowling when the batsman didn’t hit it, which riled him to an irrational level. Then Rahul really pissed him off with all the faffing about and he produces a ball that went straight to second slip.” Very true, and Sibley’s fumble certainly added to his irritation. Now Jimmy just has to hold it in his heart until the rain clears.

Is it time to move to only using pink balls in test cricket? This will stop lost play through poor light.

No. It's just time to realise that test cricket will die if they continue with the preposterous light laws. They're wearing protective clothing ffs. I hoofed a load on the draw, a quick look at the forecast made that easy money, but I'd still like to see some cricket. Pant was looking, as usual, like he was going to heave it all parts and then go out in a blaze of glory.

I agree the batters are protected much better than in the past but terrible accidents do happen e.g. poor old Phillip Hughes. The additional problem with the red ball is fielding in poor light. A pink ball will be suitable for that. The swing bowlers wont be happy but they can adapt.

I can see the appeal of making day-nighters more common, so its practical to work earlier in the day and get to a ground for most of the days play.

It's killing the format. now they've taken that reading, when the lights are on and it wasn't that dark anyway, they'll be on and off all match.

Have you got the stats for that?

Yes

Seventy per cent of pink-ball Tests thus far have finished inside four days. Each has seen a contest between bat and ball that has been absolutely mesmerising, something often missing in traditional Test matches. Each of them has drawn a near capacity crowd.

Yes

Making it harder for batters is no bad thing IMO.

The article implies the properties of the pink ball are set in stone. Different designs can be tested and trialled. In addition wickets can be prepared to suit the conditions. Are these the only variables that cause shortened games? Fuck knows. Is it a terrible thing that 70% of day night tests are completed within 4 days?

The Times on the first day night cricket match in 1952… "What is to prevent non-stop Test matches where the last wicket falls as the milkman arrives," Let there be light

Non-stop, Le Mans style test matches would be a good craic. A 48 hour bender for the Barmy Army.

As I said earlier, the forecast isn't great. But perhaps both teams are going to bat as badly as each other. A couple of balls from Anderson is all it took to change the atmosphere and England had pulled themselves back into it. Two quick wickets tomorrow would be interesting. The Indian tail is easily as bad as ours, arguably worse.

Kohli now has back to back golden ducks in test innings in this country btw, separated by 3 years.

LOL, getting hit around by a tailender with an average of less than four now.

To be fair though this isn't a bad bowling effort overall. You can't expect to defend a first innings total of less than 200 though can you.

A lead? We live in hope. (But not much)

Too many walking wickets in that team. Not sure I dare even watch.
