England Cricket 2021

Why isn't NZ playing these games? Especially if they're going to get on the BBC for new fans to see an actual contest.

Covid ahoy! Three players and four staff members down. Everyone isolating. Here are some new names for the ODI squad v Pakistan. Inexperience abounds.

John Simpson, the 32-year-old Middlesex wicketkeeper, is among the new faces in the fresh squad, along with seamers Tom Helm, (also Middlesex), Brydon Carse (Durham) and David Payne (Gloucestershire). Zak Crawley (Kent), Dan Lawrence (Essex) Phil Salt (Sussex), Will Jacks (Surrey) are uncapped batsmen at ODI level, along with all-rounder Lewis Gregory (Somerset).

Aside from Stokes, who has made 98 ODI appearances, the next most-experienced player is seamer Jake Ball, who won the last of his 18 caps in 2018.

England pitching up with an entirely different team has clearly baffled Pakistan. All that homework they would have done on how to get certain batsman out and which bowler to attack...

An endless diet of meaningless limited overs internationals right through the heart of the summer.

Scheduling is beyond pathetic. I don't care about any of these games. Just hope the weather holds out for the India tests.

I'm still unclear as to why the number one ODI side in the world:

were flown over for two tests against england and one against india, with no white ball games and then flown back to the other side of the world. these two series have been/will be utterly pointless and completely one-sided.

Parkinson's nickname of 'Parky' being bellowed out by the new keeper in the game against Pakistan every ball is er, not clever..! Particularly with Overton ('go back to your own country') in the side as well

Reaction, on Twitter, to the new England team playing Pakistan in today's ODI :

Will Silverwood buck his ideas up and pick a full strength test team?

Silverwood is to English test cricket what Starmer is to Labour.
I'm not totally convinced by Silverwood yet but I think that is a little harsh.

Squad selection was Ed Smith's responsibility until recently and then couple that with COVID (where the policy is set by Ashley Giles) it has not been an easy ride. And under Silverwood England have won in SA and SL and beaten WI and Pak, with a reasonable but not outstanding Test team.

Watching the T20? If not, probably for the best. Absolute spanking. On the plus side there’s a lot of Palestinian flags in the crowd.

I agree with this, although it's not a great reflection on England at the moment. Middling. Will get some good results, other quite poor results. I hope covid doesn't ruin the India series as that will be a proper measure. Lose to India after losing to NZ and England can definitely think of themselves only as a mid-ranking test team.

The whole India team will have been in England for ages by the time that starts as well. They won't be caught cold.

There's an excellent angry article on cricinfo today by George Dobell in which he lays into the ECB over the hundred primarily, but it's wide-ranging. It highlights one of the biggest problems for the England test team, which has now been going on for nearly a decade, namely that the batsmen coming into the team are not ready for test cricket. Their experiences at county level haven't prepared them, and nobody is able to step up and excel straight away. As Dobell points out, this used not to be the case at all - Strauss, Cook, Trott, Prior all scored hundreds on debut. This didn't used to be considered out of the ordinary. Pietersen and Bell both started scoring straight away as well. Something has gone wrong that Joe Root is the last proven test quality batsman that England have produced. He made his debut nine years ago.

That's a systemic problem. Can't lay that on Silverwood.

Have just got back home. Missed the Pakistan innings - the lowest (lowest!!!) strike rate was 150

Given that the English bowlers were getting a spanking why the hell didn't Moeen Ali get to bowl even one over??

Nevertheless, I still predict that one team will win.
