Domestic and European Rugby

It's been a while since I'd seen Exeter, given that I haven't kept up with the ITV highlights. It was very strange to see them beaten by a rolling maul.

I liked Flats' comment about the demands of the scrum: "Topsy played about 900 games for London Irish, but that was out on the wing."

Chiefs did not turn up at all, I had hoped for at least a couple of bonus points.

Exeter have a promising young team who are rapidly improving but being honest based on experience etc it is probably the second weakest squad in the league (after perennial whipping boys Newcastle) having lost a lot of senior players last year. Most of the tries this year have been one out runners crashing over from short range, and the kicking from hand has been a bit aimless (this may remind you of England?)

It’s also a thin squad compared to some clubs and three first choice players are out injured already and their absence is telling. So far we’ve won our three home games, but two of those were against teams depleted by World Cup absences, as teams get their stars back the victories will be harder to come by.

I still think we will be tough to beat at home, but doubt there’ll be many away wins (none this calendar year) and may squeak the playoffs

First week of the champions cup

The Itv game is Sunday - Sale v Ulster at 1pm.

I am quite keen to go to an away game one year. My team have Toulon (tomorrow) and also Bayonne as away games this season, which I think would be nice spots to visit. Connacht or Munster away would be fun too.

Another round of games next week too, when I think the ITV cameras are at Sandy park for Exeter v Munster

Amazing victory in Toulon for Exeter.

Winning away is very hard in European games, especially in France, more so in Toulon. And with only one away win this year in all matches, this is a huge result!

Chiefs have been flying considering how many top players left after last season
It’s been wonderful to watch. The team that won the league / Heineken cup largely moved on at the end of last season, taking their place are basically a team of youngsters, who improve every game.

While the Chiefs don’t have the big names of other teams, they are beating teams with those names in - partly by work rate, commitment and passion, but also I think by being a team that’s far greater than the sum of its parts.

A lot of opposing coaches have said their team had an off day when they came down to Sandy park, and that is down to Chiefs stopping teams from being able to do their plan A, forcing errors and then capitalising on them by being clinical from 5m out.

There’s been a lot of tries scored from interceptions and loose balls, which is all down to our defensive line speed, catching attacking players behind the gain line. Also the team are very fit, so are out scoring the opposition in the second half. I don’t think the team are afraid if they are a score down at half time.

Away form had been poor, but seems to have turned around after the Toulon win. Home form - well last loss at home was October 2022 so that’s very reliable. No one likes coming down to Sandy Park.

I think this team can get to the playoffs but will need a home draw (so top 2) to make the final, and can probably progress in the Heineken cup QF too.

Smith was incredible today, other than off the tee. As Farrell's withdrawn from the 6N it at least makes it easier to play him for England, along with Ford.

Looks like Farrell is off to Racing 92 next season, so maybe he’s played his last match for England. Whoever they pick as a replacement, I hope they back him.

I’d like to see Finn Smith getting game time in the six nations

At sisters for a few days between Xmas-NYE. BiL has season tickets again, him & my nephew, for the Rec. Discussed a probable other visit to see them to tie in with a game. Almost shat myself when BiL said it would be £95 if he was to get me a spare ticket.

Do we know who's going to captain England in the 6N? Genge and Lawes were the vice captains in the WC. George and Itoje are the other two that spring to my mind.

Glasgow very good defensively. We played very poorly, especially in the first half. So many knock ons. It’s cold but not sure why so many handling errors. I’m blaming it on attacking towards the north stand in the first half, as every match this season we’ve attacked the other way!

Referee was a joke, some hard to understand decisions.
