That legislation has always been extremely hard to pass though. Which, fine, is partly a centrist excuse for inaction. But fuck, we (the left) can't just keep falling back on the same old shit and crowing about centrists dropping the ball. This isn't just an election lost by the democrats, it's one won by vast media influence, by Elon fucking Musk and the other tech bros, by shareholder capitalism, by conspiracism and individualist tendencies that are as much reactions to threats against privilege as anything else.
Put another way; something that winds me up about how we discuss this is that we essentially cast the republicans as passive; they don't win, the dems lose. Because they're shit. Elements of truth in that for sure. But fuck, spend any time in the deeply online world of the contemporary US and you can see just how pervasive and effective the distributed campaigns of the right can be. It looks like turnout was high this year. It looks like people were motivated to vote by Trump and his associated support. It is a victory for far right politics, not just a loss for centrism.

Yeah, I think last time there was an element of 'wtf, he actually won?'. Now the ultra-libertarians, the ultra-conservatives etc have spent those 4 years, and the 4 years under Biden building structures that can take advantage of this. Project 2025 etc. And they look to have a significantly better legislative environment to do it in.
The whole concept of the USA and everything it is based on has failed and has been failing for decades.
