Anyone leaving once the economy double dips will look like a naive fool who didn't understand what policies they were implementing. If does DD, then they'll hang on, desperately trying to claim any tiny thing (12p on pensions, raising the income tax threshold by more than inflatin) as proof it was all worthwhile

At some point Lib Dem MPs will need to weigh up the value of their ministerial posts against the value of just having a seat in Parliament. They're not all going to be given safe Tory seats or peerage.

Why do imagine that LibDem MP's are so lacking in any sort of political acumen to have not yet considered the possible consequences of their decision?

I am fairly sure they didn't realise how bad it would be. They've pretty much admitted that re their bigget fuck up - the fees pledge. That was their Big Lie, they wont recover from it (just like Heseltine/Major announcing that Scargill had been right, and they were going to shut all the pits killed off the '92 government)

I think there were very many reasons for the demise of Major's second administration.

that was one tho - iot was the moment they fell dramatically behind in the polls.

Of course the ERM thing shortly afterwards sealed their fate.

Anyone chcked the odds on Hughes becoming the second Green MP?
actually, he could prolly pull this off. HUGE local tail, the sort of area really hit for 6 by these cuts, Labour not that popular due to Southwark council being pretty hopeless, and a lot in the area of the sort of young 'trendy' types who are more likely to vote green. It's feasible, and he'd hold the seat too.

Is simon hughes gonna leave the LDs?

No Even sitting on the backbenches, he's already tainted. His best bet is to sit tight and hope he can assume command after Clegg crashes and burns; the only people who will respect him for staying loyal to the Lib Dems are Lib Dem members.
